So is SPLATOON really going to lock 45 single-player missions behind amiibo?

Same here. As a concept it seemed nice, you get Yoshi's figure and you use that in different games across the board to get different things. It turned out every game will need its special iteration of Yoshi's amiibo so what I'm doing in reality is buying expensive DLC for every single game. The cards will somehow mitigate other bad side effects, like scalpers and storing a silly amount of figures at home, but the expensive DLC bit for every single game remains true.

That actually isn't true.

Where is the sweet spot?

People disagree on this, but i think Codename STEAM hit it.

You got a full game, but if you have 4 amiibos completely unrelated to the game designed for a different game you pressumably bought them for, you get the neat bonus of 4 playable characters that are irrelevant to the plot and the game doesnt really need.

People bitch about it being "locking characters behind a paywall", but really, who sees Codename STEAM and goes "AW YEAH! im going to buy that to play as Fire Emblem Characters!"?

Amiibo are making me appreciate normal DLC. Scalpers can't horde normal DLC. You don't need to visit a physical store for normal DLC. You don't have to stay up all night waiting to place an online preorder for normal DLC.

If Nintendo would offer the unlockable content in the eShop, and focus on making amiibo true "toys to life" items (like they did with SSB, and I guess Mario Party), then this wouldn't be an issue. Or at least, it'd be much less of an issue.

The extra challenges and costumes are completely optional. They wont have any affect on single/multiplier experience so why are people mad? If you don't like it don't buy the amiibo. Its not like DLC map packs and weapon packs in other FPS's where if you don't get them your stuck behind everyone else who has them.

I never hated DLC to begin with except for the value of it in certain cases.

But yeah, at least everyone can be "ripped off" at their own leisure with that kind.

It's $13 for an decent quality Nintendo figurine

I buy some amiibos, but the quality is shit compared to similar stuff like DI or Skylanders.

Yea, I saw someone complain they wanted FE characters in STEAM without buying Amiibo. There's always going to be people complaining. I'm glad the unlockables are small enough to not be considered actual worthwhile DLC if they were just sold digitally (in my opinion). I also think STEAM does it well, as well as Cpt. Toad.

I remember the Amiibo speculation threads for Captain Toad. People were considering entire stages based on each Amiibo character to be unlocked! That would truly be a bad unlockable because it's huge. Compare that to the little hide-&-seek in existing stages the Toad Amiibo unlocks and it makes sense.

Well Nintendo is using Fire Emblem characters as a way to make Code Name Steam more appealing.

So its not that ludicrous that Fire Emblem fans would want to play those characters in the game.

Its Nintendo marketing to blame if this a feature but your so out of luck because you cannot find those figures.

But this applies to like 95% of all on disc/pre-release DLC that is released. It's a bunch of meaningless skins, different color coats and hats, I think the point people are making is "See Nintendo is just like EA/Activision/ubisoft" when it wasn't too long ago that we were getting "Nintendo is the only company that gets DLC!" threads and acting like they were above it all, just like lots of people wanted you to believe that Nintendo was above making mobile games...until they weren't.

Unlocking costumes in MK8 with amiibos is good.
Unlooking costumes in Splatoon with amiibos is bad.

i was referring to the other dlc. characters, tracks, etc.
i still think the MK costumes are bad, but they're less egregious because it was created post-release.

this is kind of a separate issue, but Nintendo's stance on costumes is really foolish. i doubt most people play as miis in smash bros and mario kart, so why are costumes exclusive to them?

I feel the same, I'm not a fan of DLC but for the regular one I don't have to fight against a scalper to get it.

I really wish they teamed up with Good Smile Company. FigmAmiibos would defenitely be something I would be will to part my money with.

Agreed, at least the pre-orders would be more civilized,

Wouldn't be surprised if something like 99% of people who want to play as FE characters in Code Name STEAM won't be able to, due to the fact they're tied to ultra-rare amiibo. It's so lame.

No.

Because they are rehashes of the single-player missions with forced stipulations (time-limited, only use weapon X, don't get hit, etc) that you can re-enact all you want on your own without the amiibo.

Sometimes first post should've been in the OP. People don't read it and take OP's post for granted... and goes the Amiibo hate and Nintendo fans bashing :/

My point stands: If you want the special content, you're likely out of luck since amiibo are nearly impossible to find. Regardless of what the content is, if someone wants it, there's little chance they'll get it.

When Nintendo announces an amiibo these days, they may as well be talking about something that doesn't exist, because I know that the average person (and even those watching preorders like a hawk) won't be able to get one.

I hope thi issue gets solved for US-GAF, sounds ridicolous.

They're already making more Marth amiibo. I assume shipments are low due to the strike and concerns about amiibo being a bust. Now that they are clearly a success, they should improve their supply chain to better meet demand or add a pure DLC option. Not sure if they'll do either though.

Hopefully it'll improve, but I wouldn't be surprised if the scalpers just snatch up all of Marth Wave 2, as well

And what if you want Robin in Code Name STEAM? Or Ike? Or Lucina?

It's a bad situation. It's no secret I love Nintendo, but this kind of sucks.

That's the problem. Tying stuff I want to figures that are nearly impossible to get.

Oh, I totally get your issue with availability, and I am with you there. It's difficult as hell to obtain an amiibo. Something that Nintendo needs to address, are the strikes the real reason?

But, that's nos the issue with most of the people in this thread.

If its any consolation, Ike and Marth suck in STEAM's mid-to-end game.

So much talk of "people"

why don't we wait for these opinions to present themselves before we make preemptive strawman attack threads? the hypothetical nintendo apologist has yet to rear their head in this thread, yet we have multiple pages of posters complaining of their existence.

Since they're essentially rehashes of single-player missions, it doesn't really seem that offensive. I do get why people who are not interested in figures wouldn't approve of this though.

It's a catch-22. Some want amiibo to do more, others don't want Nintendo to lock content behind them. So far the figurines have unlocked neat little things that don't really matter, but are cool to have. I think this is the route they should continue to go. If they start to lock meaningful features behind them, they're going to upset quite a few people.

I buy amiibo because they're good-looking figurines of my favorite characters. I've never actually bought one just to unlock the content it brings. In fact, most of my amiibo have never been placed on the GamePad - not even once. And I'm totally fine with that.

Nintendo quickly seems to be adding more and more Amiibo locked features while not appropriately supplying them or offering alternatives for getting them. It's one of the most frustrating things any of the big three are doing right now.

Can you blame them though? A company that completely messed up their flagship console this generation and is having a hard time even selling them finds basically a golden goose in Amiibos with nerds acting like meth addicts going through withdrawal trying to figure out when the next shipments are and where they can pick up the one toy they need. Of course they will keep adding Amiibo functionality to games even though there is no correlation that the Amiibo craze is actually helping push consoles or the games. Hell I have 1 Kirby Amiibo, and I don't even have a Wii U and haven't owned a Nintendo machine since the GBA and before that it was a NES.

I'm the OP, the one calling out Nintendo on their amiibo practices.

But saying Splatoon doesn't look good is crazy talk.

The game itself looks amazing, and by all accounts plays amazing. It's not "yay bright colors." It's "YAY FUCKING AWESOME GAMEPLAY."

The bullshit amiibo practice doesn't undermine the core game. The core game is fine. I just want Nintendo to address the amiibo situation.

Either solve the supply issue, and make amiibo reliably available, or make the content tied to them available in some other way.

I'm an avid figure collector and my shelf is crowded with scale figures, nendos etc. but I'm not laying down $40 for a figma-style Amiibo.

Too cumbersome to manage in NFC scenarios with none of the ease of transport. The only thing Amiibo needs to do better for what it provides is live up to the prototypes that they display, which is the only real difference between it and DI/Skylanders figures.

False demand would be saying "hey, everybody wants this," but nobody actually wants it.

What they're doing is not producing enough to meet the actual demand.

Sorry, false demand was the wrong term, what I meant was manufactured demand. I believe that if the market was flooded with them and everyone that wanted one could buy one, nobody would even be talking about them.

The key for this example is, you pressumably bought Robin/Marth/Ike/Lucina for use with Smash bros, but then comes another game and it's like "oh btw, your pay stuff for smash bros also unlocks stuff in this game!", when was the last time you bought a skin for, i dunno, Street Fighter 4 and it turned out it also unlocked a Costume in MVC3?

That I can agree with and I hope they'll handle better next waves of Amiibos. In France at least (and I'm guessing in Europe) the only rare Amiibo is Little Mac (more than 50€) but all other Amiibos are available for 25€ tops and I manage to get all the rare ones by going into shops or waiting for another batch online. I've already pre ordered both Splatoon and Yoshi collectors editions and they are still available at the moment.

But even if I agree to say that they handle shipments badly (and retailer exclusives for US is so anti consumer I hate this) I'm not sure why people who would want a FE costume in Code Name S.T.E.A.M because they like FE so much wouldn't have tried before to get it.

Nintendo should offer pre order on their own site and adjust production accordingly.

Conversely, When was the last time you paid $13 (or more if you hace to deal with scalpers) for a skin or costume in a game?

The other issue being that these things can be very game specific. You are assuming that someone who like Fire emblem and STEAM will also already have Smash Bros. What if you have no interest in that and just want the content for the games you do like?

Just want to clear a single point up really quick.

A lot of people keep mentioning that Amiibos are super rare/hard to find, but I thought that was due to the huge ports closing/strike stuff that was going on in California forever?

Is that not the case?

It's times like this that I'm so glad Nintendo is flopping so hard this gen because I would hate to imagine how shitty the industry would be if companies would start copying this shit.

The port strike ended in February.
No idea what the issue is now.

At this juncture I think that calling Splatoon's amiibo situation bad is jumping to conclusions. The missions, while they look fun, are just alterations of the existing missions ingame. While it will leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth if the amiibo missions are the only way to use non-Splattershot weapons in single player, we don't know for sure right now. With any luck the missions will have their own "time trial"/"weapon trial"/whatever attached to them without amiibos and the amiibo will only unlock slight variations of what is already there.

Additionally I have a feeling that the Splatoon Girl/Boy amiibo will be readily accessible. Nintendo is pushing the game hard and I can't imagine them halfassing the production of those two.
RIP anyone who wants the squid tho

The inability of Nintendo to stock amiibo worth a damn in unacceptable though. I don't understand what would be so hard about taking orders directly through their site for at least the more rare figures and then producing that amount.

Uh, no. I can't even find them in japanese web stores, they go out of stock in less than a couple minutes.

Normally, I don't care, since the in-game application is usually trifling. But with the Splatoon amiibo, I'm reading there are 15 single-player challenges and five rare pieces of gear tied to each figure. So for all three figures (conveniently available in one package), that's 45 single-player challenges and 15 rare pieces of gear.

This is unacceptable.

Ask them how they'd feel if Ubisoft released Assassin's Creed figurines that you can use to unlock otherwise hidden content on the next game (I think it was called Victory?). The shit storm would be bigger than Unity's launch.

This is unacceptable.

The missions are just reused content.

What's unacceptable is that you're being forced to grind out/replay missions so you can unlock something you just paid money for. what the fuck is with that?

If it was just costumes would anyone give a shit?

Hell, don't you already do that? Unlock costumes and money by connecting to their mobile apps or whatever? People already don't care.
