sounds like it's 2 3.2 processors short. But it's 1.18 teraflops more.

the gpus are a big unknown. And the total system power is not so easy to measure.

Of course it won't look a generation ahead. They're launching what....9 months apart? I don't think there will be any real apparent difference between the 2 graphically.

The xbox was what 3 times as powerfull as the PS2? And the graphical difference came mainly from texturin and image quality. And the PS3 is roughly twice as powerfull as the 360. So yeah you'll see it in on exclusives...but even less of a difference than this generation. That's what I'm seeing anyway.

I think the biggest issue with the PS3 will be distributing the code. It isn't a unified architecture so it will be a little more difficult.

However, I'm certain the console developers will have no issue. You guys think way too much like a current generation PC.

The powerpoint put the cpu as almost exactly 2x the X360 cpu in terms of floating point operations.

You're making 2 mistakes...

1. You're taking these specs at face value...If anything, Nvidia and Sony are total bullshit artists...Its powerful, but it won't make breakfast.

2. All that power is useless if the bandwidth is limited...at least thats what the general concensus is at B3D. I'm no techie, so I can only go by what others say.

Essentially we are going to have two systems at comparable power and it really will come down to the games. I'm kinda disappointed by the game announcements thus far. Couldn't we have more than one title that doesn't have a number next to it?

if an 8 spe Cell at 4.096 ghz gives 256 Gflops

then how does a 7 spe cell at 3.2 Ghz provide 218?

Also, now everything is out in the open.... is one of those 7 spe's still locked down? It certainly seemed to be 2 days ago! so are we effectively cutting it down to 6 Spe's?

by my shitty maths , that comes down to around 150+ Gflops... although i don't profess to be an expert.

Even assuming, at worst, parity between the X-Box 360 and PS3 games, that would be a coup for Sony. Microsoft would lose the graphical edge it had on Sony, while Sony would have the advantage of the strength of the PlayStation brand, better developer support, Blu-Ray movies and full backwards compatibility. And with PS3 likely shipping March-May in the U.S., I don't think they can count on launching first to help them much. More gamers will be willing to wait 3-5 months than 12.
