So the Apple Watch seems pretty useless for third parties

this limitation is saying google could make a maps app that ties into their iphone app but if you want to zoom in or out of the app on the map on the watch, you can’t.

regardless of the known limitation of the apps not running directly on the watch, the extreme lack of user interface options here is ridiculous.

This limitation is saying that if you want to display some information that would be good for a quick glance you're welcome to do so.

right. except for the built in Apple Maps watch app, which can zoom in and out.

anyways, whatever. we have different expectations, here.

Yeah, but the iPhone was like that before the 3rd one. You go to build up an API based around what customers and developers want, I guess.

Implying that Apple is assuming developers and customers /don't/ want this type of functionality? Because there's no way they're that stupid/oblivious.

No scrolling? So you can't make a UI that's longer than the screen?

There is a quote in the article that says:

The main limitation that we have run into is the lack of access to the [Digital Crown] beyond scrolling the entire view

So they do have access to digital crown scrolling.

And for all we know, at least some of the features currently unavailable will be in the SDK before launch. Or at least, will be in the SDK eventually for the 1st gen device.

I'm an huge Apple fan but boy i would really like to see this thing crash and burn.
I'm not even against smartwatches or wearables i'm just against this particular one.

I'll be building an extension of my current app to work on Apple Watch. I don't think it will be anything mind shattering at first, but spending a few weeks to add a little bit of convenience to the app is nice.

Tons of people, if only for the prestige. You would not believe how high the demand for the crazy expensive gold one is in China

That's why China are morons. Apple has lost its branding power.
I don't know anyone who thinks having anything Apple is a sign of wealth. In fact, I can't quickly recall anyone who has iPhone's anymore.

tdlr; Third-party watch apps aren't allowed to do any of the following:

- Function without a paired iPhone
- Wake up/open companion iOS app
- Use finger scrolling or the Digital Crown
- Use “Force Touch” to control interface
- Use Taptic Engine for vibration feedback
- Access heart rate monitor
- Use NFC
- Use microphone for anything other than dictating text
- Play sounds
- Remotely access the iPhone’s camera
- Render animations/play video
- Display custom watch faces
- Offer in-app purchases
- Pair with more than one iPhone at a time

I don't understand this. They've demoed a Starwood Hotels app that uses NFC to unlock your room.

edit: apparently it doesn't use NFC. welp.

Is it high enough that I would want to somebody should scalp one?

Apple nowadays is more than a sign of wealth, is a sign of standard.
It's perfectly expected that you have or had an Apple product in the recent past and the one who don't stand out more.

Never buy second gen either. It usually takes till the third gen for these kinds of products.

If they follow what they did with iPad and iPhone the fourth gen will actually be the first real mature product.

I honestly can't think of a reason to buy the Apple Watch, other than having money to burn. By the time it matures enough to be worth a damn, it will be the third or fourth iteration. Same with Android Wear. Don't buy a first gen product in a new category.

The fact you need to lug around your phone, which already has a fucking clock on it, is why this product will fail.

Still a day one purchase. The first gen iPhone was great without third party bullshit, and the Apple Watch will be great as well.

You people act like there will never be a software update fer this thing. Jeez.

I know. It's kind of hilarious. My personal favorite:

You can either be for or against GAF. What will you choose?

As a developer, l was keen to play with one and try out some ideas, but those are some SERIOUS limitations.

As a runner, the fact that it doesn't have a GPS chip and needs a connection to the phone is an outdated design.

I don't think there's any part of me left that wants an Apple Watch.

This is based on what was available with WatchKit in December? There have been updated releases since then, though I don't know what they contained.
Let's wait until Monday and see what they say about APIs first.

Doesn't matter, its gonna sell regardless. I am sure even the watch didn't show time, it would sell.

People will buy this on merit, but there will be a large percentage of consumers who like Apple products that will buy this without any concern or question as to its (limited) function.
IMO a lot of people will buy it because Apple makes quality products and the devices do what they would like them to do easily and nicely.

They'll buy it for what it DOES do, not for what it does not. The fact that apple has a good relationship with their customers is what will pique their interest but not what will decide their purchase.

Sometimes it's better to not throw everything out there. The first iPhones had heavy restrictions and developers still made successful appa for them

I would never use any current smart watch for running or cycling.

If only that was the case here...

What people keep forgetting, is this is no longer a new market. Android wear watches are heading into iteration 2.

How can you be over a year late to the party, and launch with an incomplete SDK?

They're late to a market that still hasn't taken hold and is very unestablished. This is all over reaction.

I will wait until next Monday to decide. I may just go with a Gen 1 Pebble this year that I can get on the cheap. I can at least test out how often I use a device like this.

I feel like companies are trying to force these watches into the market. I honestly do not see the usability of them.

Smartphones solved complicated problems. Tablets did as well. Even though I can't stand tablets, I still bought one because it solved a complicated problem. I feel like these watches are trying to solve problems that are already solved, or aren't very problematic in the first place. They are trying to add a layer of convenience to an already convenient situation.

And remember, 2.5 hours of actual usage or about 19 hours of typical battery life... And people saying this is actually good. I really don't get the mind fuck it takes to excuse some of these things

Apple putting in a battery reserve mode is completely un-apple like and something they would relentlessly make fun of if their competition did it.
