So the Hogwarts Legacy devs lied about using next gen assets on Switch 2...

Specifically, I'm talking about this video

There they said they are using the next gen assets (next gen means current gen obviously) on the Switch 2 instead of starting from the Switch 1 version.

But if you analyse the final game, you will find out it pretty much uses the last gen assets across the board. In this comparison, you can see how many assets are missing (which is an exact match for the last gen version)

sEAKwZP.png

This is just a tiny example, there are differences like that across the whole game. DF made a good comparison there. There are not only assets removed, but some are swapped out for a low polygon version (like using the angular table instead of a round one, which I find to be a very clever trick for reducing stress on last gen consoles)

You can also see some last gen optimizations (like sealing rooms off from the world) are also in place on Switch 2, despite the system having much more RAM, much faster storage and a lot more CPU grunt than the last gen consoles.

Now obviously Switch 2 is not as powerful as Series S, but given the statements they made I would have expected atleast some current gen assets to be carried over andI would also have expected them to remove the last gen optimizations like the sealed gangways (which are obviously in place because of the slow HDDs in these consoles).

But what irks me the most is the blatant lie from the devs. No, you are not using "next gen assets", this is just deceptive marketing.

I mean, the mere fact that they even ported a low effort port to Switch 2 seems impressive. Given that 99,9 % of other devs isn't even bothering to do that.

I can see as a "false true"

If they say that has actual gen assets, doesn't mean that all assets are. One may think that, but one thing doesn't null the other

Kinda sucks thou

Would be funny if there were exactly two current gen assets somewhere in the world, so this statement would be true lol.

We have many comparisons now, but I have yet to find current gen assets. So far all the comparisons I've seen lack assets from the current gen version. Maybe someone playing the game could go for an asset hunt.

Thank you Sherlock. When I buy my S2 I'll smash it.

I mean its already clear third party devs have no interest in Switch 2, there wasn't any chance anyone of them would put in more than a minimal effort to port anything to Switch 2.

Dude, you're trying so hard. The Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy is one of the best selling versions, that's why they made sure a day one release would appear on the new system

Looks like the Switch 2 uses some assets from the current Gen. Looks at the object in the left corner, is the same as the Series S version.

You are confusing assets with textures. The Switch 2 uses better textures on that stove, but it's still the last gen asset. You can tell by looking at the edges of it, you will see the Series S version is more rounded compared to the Switch 2 one.

But yeah, texture quality is the area where the Switch 2 has the upper hand compared to the last gen version.

That not just a texture bump, is a complete different object, is pretty clear. So technically is the PS4 version with some next gen (current) assets. Technically they were correct.

Judging from the lack of patches from first party devs, it is not like they are putting much effort either. Shame on Monolithsoft for the lack of res and framerate unlock on the XC games. I am sure they will be selling a 10$ patch for this in a few months.

Given that they aren't getting any third party games, i imagine Nintendo and Monolith Soft is scrambling all their resources to make new games for Switch 2, given that will be the only games the Switch 2 will get, for the most part.

I was going to make a joke about Nintendo fear syndrome going on here but it's just too sad if you really think about it.,

Just play games and don't worry about the things you don't have any interest in.

It just took me 2 minutes to find a current gen asset on the Switch 2 version in the video, and the guys already talking about the the lack of third party support… When Nintendo did their Nintendo partners showcase for the Switch 2? 🤣🤣 Guys are desperate.

It's not that Nintendo made an underpowered console but devs who don't want to sell more games just because.

Seriously.
I don't think power is a factor. Gamecube was pretty powerful for its time but no third party cared about it at all. I just don't think third parties have any interest in Nintendo consoles, and thus from their perspective putting in resources to port stuff to Nintendo consoles just take away resources they rather spend on PC, PS and Xbox.

It's definately not the Series S asset and it's a lot closer to the PS4 version. So the statement is still false.

I've marked the polygon edges for you in red so you can see it. https://imgsli.com/Mzg3MDg1 (compare in full screen). The polygon count is a exact match.

What I didn't mark is the top lid, that even has less polygons than the PS4 version.

So if we leave texture quality aside, this is definately not using the current gen assets.

Gamecube only sold 20 million. Switch 2 will likely be at least five times that. Third parties will care, but that doesn't mean every new game will come to Switch 2. Power is more of a factor than anything else.

Again, you are confusing texture quality with asset quality. It's the PS4 asset with lower polygons on the top lid but with a texture upgrade. Definately not the Series S asset. I've marked the polygon edges already, you have to look at the comparison I've made for you.

That's definitely not closer to the PS4 version and it's not just a Texture bump… Is pretty obvious.

Texture wise it's closer to the Series S, no question. It's a lot more detailed which is probably why you think it's closer in general. But I'm just talking about the polygon density in the asset quality here, not how it looks overall.

The more rounded a object is, the more polygon it has, thus the higher quality it is. The top lid of the PS4 asset vs the Switch 2 asset is a perfect example. I've marked the polygonal edges for you in red. For some reason, the Switch 2 version has less polygons.

See how edged that top lid is? Normally you would expect it to be perfectly round. This is because not many polygons are rendered.

If you take a look at the PS4 asset, the top lid is much smoother and rounder. So this asset is higher quality.

The overlapping edge on the side matches between both assets (like I've shown in the imgsli comparison), while the Series S is rounder there too. Therefore I would say the asset itself (not counting texture quality) is PS4 quality with better textures but some downgrades.

I was playing the Switch 2 version last night and it's awesome. I also have the original Switch version so I only paid £8.49 to upgrade.

And back in the real world the mass majority of people that will buy this game on the Switch will not even care. The Switch 2 version is a massive upgrade over the Switch version and runs and looks just fine. The HDR is pretty game changing as well.

Normal people : hey we thought the switch 2 was going to be nearly on par with a base ps4 .. it seems to be a bit better than a ps4 pro!

Crazy Fanboys: see the ps5 is more powerful lol !!!

Same asset as the Series S version. you cant see the edge of the polygon in the Sereis S, becouse the withe thing...

As you've said, we can't compare the ring because the white text from the UI map marker blocks the edges. What we can compare is what is not blocked, like the top lid or the overlapping base of the lid. Both show significant compromises compared to Series S and thus, it is not the Series S asset. I don't know what else to tell you.
