So uh... did my hard drive die?

I have a Western Digital 80GB USB2 drive... I just tried to access files on it, and Windows displayed nothing on the drive. But no error. I refresh, nothing. Explorer shows the correct total space/free space, but no contents.

I disconnect the drive and plug it back in, and Windows recognizes it as an unknown device.

I do it again, still the same. Now the access light on the drive just keeps blinking, but I don't hear any ill noises coming from it.

Yep. Dead. Same thing happened to me 2 months back. Luckily I got a program that managed to recover every important file I needed. It was all still there, but the HD killed itself. Ah, well. Gave me an excuse to buy this 160GB HD for $100.

It's called Restorer 2000. I paid $20 for it. It gained access to the dead HD and I managed to get all of my files out. There's a version for NTFS, for FAT, and for both kinds of HDs. Great proggy. I'd be eternally fucked if it didn't exist.

When I managed to quick format the wrong partition on one of my drives a while back, I bought "R-Studio" to restore it, which also works for NTFS, FAT, Linux, etc.

If you're running XP or have a copy of it, the easiest way to check it would be to reboot with your CD/DVD drive as the first boot device with the XP cd inside.

Go through the steps till you get to the point where you can view the drives available on your drive, and see if it's recognized.

I've seen a few people who had the drives connected incorrectly and for whatever reason had the partition deleted and think it was dead only to find out they can just create a new partition and keep using it.

Most drives give out terrible grinding noises when going out, your symptoms sound like you lost the partition on that drive.

I suggest giving it a try before going out to buy another.
