Dusk Golem
A 21st Century Rockefeller
Resident Evil 4 was re-released again and it's spun a lot of topics about RE4, so here's another.
Callout to GAF user etta, who inspired this topic because they asked into today's DigitalFoundry analysis of the PS4/Xbox One ports why this game was so well regarded to RE5/RE6, asked if the story was good, and when some comments said it was cheesy, decided to pass on the game due to it. Which then lead to a lot of off-topic discussion about RE4's story.
But really, RE4 is always praised for its gameplay, pacing, and whatever... But what about its story? It kind of took everything about RE series up until then and the build-up to take down Umbrella and just threw it all out of the window, giving a rather mundane answer to what took them out... Stocks. Maybe for the best? Maybe a missed opportunity? Depends who you ask.
Before release they really played up the mystery element of RE4. These aren't zombies, they just look like regular people? Why are they attacking in hordes? The answer turned out to be parasites that burst out of peoples heads. And something about a cult.
What most people remember about RE4's story is its cheesy dialogue. How could anyone forget such quotes as
The list could go on and on. Yet, this element may very well come due to the English translation. As an effort by Project Umbrella to re-translate all the files in the RE series more accurate to their original Japanese scripts show, and as News Bot likes to remind, the games are heavily localized and not really reflective of their original scripts. So there's a chance the charm many have towards RE4 and its hammy dialogue is a result of localization. How does RE4's story with lessened cheese?
Those credits, though.
Or maybe, just what do you think of RE4's story? It was a turning point in the series for a number of reasons, and everyone who's played RE4 seem to remember quite a few scenes and line from the game's narrative, so what do you all think?

I'm sure you boys didn't just tag along so we could sing Kumbiya together at some boyscout bonfire, then again, maybe you did.
