So what happened to rap?

If you want to listen to some really good hiphop i would recommend the following:

Immortal Technique
Jedi Mind Tricks
A Tribe Called Quest
KRS ONE
Early Wutang (and their solo stuff)
Early Redman
Gravediggaz
early Onyx
Vinnie Paz
Jus Allah
Army of the Pharoahs
Celph Titled (i think he is the best MC in the game atm)
anything on the Definitive Jux Label (Cannibal Ox etc)
E-LP
Cage
Aesop Rock
Atmosphere
Eyedea and Abilities (RIP)
Clandestien (Australian)
Downsyde (Australian) - any of the SBX guys are v good.

these are some really good artists to get you exposed to some of the better elements of hiphop rather than the mainstream bullshit.

Why is rap seen as homogenous? It's like the musical equivelant of whiteness theory. Rappers are collectively responsible for the whole genre 'for some reason'.

All country sounds the same to me tbh, but just because I'm not into it doesn't mean that there isn't content of real substance in the genre. I'm sure if I got down to it I could probably find some country dude to bump but as it stands nah, I can respect the genre even if I don't care about it. It's just music.

No but really fuck this whole ideal of rap being dead just because it's not boom bap beats and super lyrical shit. There are artists, especially from the south, doing awesome things. Although I can attest to the fact it gets boring at times, by no means is it "dead" Nas just said that shit to sell records. Imma drop a list below of shit you should check out and yeah most of it might be considered "ignorant" but the way they do it is extremely creative. I mean Migos pioneered a whole flow right now.

Roc Marciano
Lil B
Young Thug
Migos
Max B
Dipset
Gucci Mane
Clipse
Kevin Gates
Don Trip and Starlito
Future

It was destined to happen. There was never an artistic guiding hand behind the genre. No passionate goal in a lot of these artists heads. Why does Lil Wayne rap? Money and bitches. Why does Dipset rap? Money and bitches. Why does Nicki Minaj rap? Money.

The legacy of other genres is pure art and competition. Led Zeppelin wanted to be the best. The Beatles wanted to create and innovate. Bands like Sonic Youth and Pink Floyd desperately wanted to experiment with the core ideas of their genre. Where is that exploratory spirit in rap? I'd say gone, but it was never there.

Truth be told rap is a novelty born from simple people killing time at get togethers. The sooner people stop expecting 'art' from it the sooner it can fade into obscurity as it has long deserved. All it exists to do now is amplify the violence, destruction, and misery of a community too blinded by low expectations to want better. And yes I do mean the black community, the people modern rap is designed for.

I'm surprised you didn't get banned for this post.

Are rap songs only limited to bitches, fucking, ass, twerk, booty, niggas, breasts, drugs, guns? Literally that's all I hear when it comes to rap. Can't anyone write anything that makes some sense? At least tell some story with emotions rather than bs that we keep hearing.

Fuck out of here with this baseless opinion.

Nothing. Just this month, there's;

Fashawn - The Ecology
MF Doom & Bishop Nehru - Nehruvian Doom
Lupe Fiasco - Tetsuo & Youth
Homeboy Sandman - Hallways
Joey Bada$$ - B4.DA.$$
Vince Staples - Hell Can Wait EP

That alone is a pretty big spread in the genre. The rest of the year has a Big KRIT release, RTJ2, FlyLo project and a possible Jay Rock project for bigger titles.

Yeah. that is so lame. I went through that phase in my teen years. So cringe now that I think about.

Nothing like having Roc Marciano/Future/Migos/Evidence etc. in the library to mix it up. I'm equally excited for that new Diamond D album as I am for that new Meek Mill album that is coming up. Underground/Mainstream, whatever you want to call it. It's all good to me. As long as the Hip-Hop is good, I'm there. No sides chosen.

Omg I'm back in 1986.

So you're just gonna dismiss an entire genre based on popular songs you heard. You do know how ignorant you sound, right? I guess all heavy metal is about satan right?

You might want to try broadening your horizons before writing off an entire genre

So you're asking us what to do about your decision to listen only to rap that you don't like?

Have you thought this topic through?

When the popular music is shit, how can you blame non-listeners for thinking it's all shit? And it's not like the guns/drugs/bitches thing is an unfair stereotype, it's all over the place, even with 'good' rappers.

Stop listening to 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne and go listen to some Kendrick Lamar or Kanye.

Like these. Kanye is constantly talking about his dick and where he puts it. What Kendrick I've heard has a lot to do with homies and drinking.

Stuff I like that isn't so much about the bad stuff:
MF Doom
Talib Kwali
Mos Def
Sage Francis
Blackalicious
Saul Williams
SHAD

edit: personally I'd like to hear more hip hop that uses different musical styles too, less of the dark sounding beats, bit more imagination with the sounds.

Then listen to some different genres of hiphop. Check out some Ugly Duckling, KRS One, EL-P, downsyde and some of the less "dark" hiphop. I also think Atmosphere is pretty creative with Slug's beats.

OP you've pretty much been listed everything good.

Explore. Have fun.

I'll throw in Flatbush Zombies since I haven't seen anyone mention them.

Fell out of love with rap a good while ago but recently got introduced to Death Grips which just blew my mind.

Not exactly traditional rap but mostly abrasive, industrial and very aggressive punk-rap hybrid shit that tickles my aggressive-bone just the right way most of the time.
"The Money Store" album is a dirty, violent pile of awesome in particular. First artist in ages that actually had me looking up lyrics and such.

This thread could have gone a whole lot better if there was less "Go find it yourself" posts and more like what we got by page 3 and 4.

I'm picky with music, but I think to myself I just stopped caring who's making good music. But then people mention Kanye, Death Grips and Migos and I remember that I shouldn't necessarily pay much attention to Hip Hop GAF. There was a Kendrick track a couple pages back that makes me want to pay more attention to him and there's a YouTube Playlist that I can work through, so a couple things got through my filter.

These threads always pop up. And people always pot massive lists of stuff. By the 5000th thread people do get tired of doing the same thing over and over again.

Start a rap recommendation thread if youre really too lazy to find music yourself.

I dont think people are looking to find good rap. At least I'm not. I'm just of the opinion rap and hip hop mainstream stuff is awful. Maybe I just out grew it and it's always been the same. I remember listening to Public Enemy Fear of a Black Planet over and over. LL Cool J too, and later some Eminem stuff.

Now I feel like a lot of people just sort of laughs and rolls their eyes at the hip hop/rap genre. some catchy songs out there that hit mainstream, but overall it's nonsense. Yes we get it, you like fucking bitches and you own guns. What's that? You smoke weed too? Wow, crazy.

Eminem: yeah we get it, you had a shitty childhood and your mother was horrible to you so now you're fucked up. Wow, crazy.

This is the kind of ignorant fuckery that people who "laugh at" hip hop have as a mindset. You won't listen to the good modern stuff so it sucks. There's boom bap, trap, G-funk etc etc being made nowadays for people to discover. It might not be topping the charts anymore, but every sub genre of hip hop still has fans and artists making those kinds of music. Just because you dont like what you heat on the radio, does not mean there isn't good music being made.

Fuck outta here.

Sorta... Kendrick's drink song has an underlying message about substance abuse and its damage. Other topics are discussed while providing some kind of reflection, or insight to past events. Context is critical.

listen to kendrick lamars album Good kid madd city the whole album tells a story. best rap album of the decade.

I'm inclined to agree. Unfortunately, it's impossible to understand this without listening to the album in full. Watching singles on Youtube doesn't really do the album justice when the story is told in context, and between the songs during the voicemail recordings. It's crazy how much more you appreciate this album once you realize that Kendrick is rapping through the perspective of different characters (including himself at a younger age). I've listened to this album countless times now, and it never ceases to impress me. It's truly an achievement on all levels (minus Drake).

1 Train is probably the best track on that album. And man, that Yelawolf verse is good too.

It's not that I wont listen to it, I'm saying I'm not going to go discover it. It's gotta come to me. The bad stuff is nice enough to comply, it's only fair.

There was an "obscure" hip-hop thread a few months ago. Might be worth checking out.

I've actually created a Google Music playlist from the first two pages so far, I really should post that when I get a chance to that thread or this one.

Why does it have to come to you? Plenty of great books, movies, games, etc that are not hyped or talked about much and you don't hear people saying "WHY DO ALL BOOKS SUCK?" ALL BOOKS ARE ABOUT NOW ARE VAMPIRES, WERWOLVES, AND LOVE STORIES!"

Point is sometimes you have to put some energy into something to find something good, music is the same as any other medium. If you do not want to put out that energy, then do not generalize a whole genre because you are to lazy to go find music in said genre.

Gotta admit I wasn't well versed (pun?!) in rap music, but the links posted in this thread got me hella interested now.
