Soccer has become the sport of choice for NYC hipsters

This is particularly evident in New York creative circles, where the game’s aesthetics, Europhilic allure and fashionable otherness have made soccer the new baseball — the go-to sport of the thinking class.

Gone are the days, in other words, when you could make a wisecrack about David Beckham’s latest hairstyle and be done with the topic (note to newbies: Mr. Beckham, retired from the sport, is now an underwear pitchman). Nowadays, smart-set types are expected to be conversant in European soccer. “It’s like the way you expect somebody to know what’s happening in ‘True Detective,’ ” said David Coggins, the editorial director for the Freemans Sporting Club fashion label, who writes about European soccer for A Continuous Lean and Valet.

The thinking class? The smart set? Buying into the myth of hipster psuedo-intellectualism. Wonderful.

EDIT: and LOL at following that description up with comparing it to having to know what's happening on True Detective. A brilliant TV show, to be sure, but a god damn TV show. Wow. Such smart. Much thinking.

Gonna be sending black players pictures of bananas on Instagram.

I now want to see a hipster Ultras group.

That article hurts to read. I hate velcro fans of any sport. I played soccer a bit growing up but abandoned it for hockey. I can still watch a game from time to time, but this is sort of analysis of what the "cool" sport is just comes off grating. Soccer is a great game to play/watch, but who gives a shit about what the "artistic crowd" thinks of it?

At least this suggests the hipsters won't be moving into hockey. The European appeal is largely Eastern Europe, and that's not prestigious enough for these dopes.

The most hipster thing I've ever done is watch the Russian Premeir League one summer on an Irish a la carte sports channel called Setanta.

Wouldn't this be going against the hipster creed? Do they know soccer is the most popular sport in the world? They're gonna be pissed in a couple months!

yeah, I bet it has nothing to do with the fact they're top of the league. bunch of glory hunting hipsters.

From what i understand Liverpool have always been quite popular team to support even more so when we were brought out by John Henry, although yea you may be right regarding new football fans, but who cares as long as they are enjoying the game.

"hipsters"?..

Anyway, yeah soccer is great and fun. Like many other sports.
But it's great fun to just play with a soccerball with a couple of friends. Doesn't even have to be the sport of soccer. Look at it as throwing a ball, instead of really playing baseball.

Actually in that picture the kid is watching the Liverpool - Man City game which was 3-2, it was a pretty exciting game.

Indeed, that match was amazing.

If someone didn't find that match enthralling, I'm not sure what to say to them
other than sorry that they're a United fan

FootballAssociation (FA)

Guys why do u do dis

soccer (n.) Look up soccer at Dictionary.com
1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang (with jocular formation -er (3)), from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); compare rugger. An unusual method of formation, but those who did it perhaps shied away from making a name out of the first three letters of Assoc.

Don't blame us.

Every American soccer fan I know is so goddamn annoying about it. "OMG you don't watch LA LIGA? I can't get enough!"

I hang out with a couple who always try to rope me into soccer conversations, but then they end up just throwing out random soccer player names to one another and arguing over who's better. I get the idea that they both don't really know anything about the sport but are very proud of themselves regardless.

Doesn't help that the chick in that relationship "Hates the US team because none of her favorite players are on it". She roots for England in the world cup because she feels she should have been born there.

ugh

Considering how little equipment is required to play soccer, I'm surprised it's taken this long for it to gain traction in America.

I played soccer for a few years as a kid in the surburbs of Montreal, I wonder if the sport is more popular in Canada...

I'm just messing. I think it's great that America is slowly accepting football into their heart. The international threads are always great.

Can definitely see the more liberal parts of the US taking it on board. Saw a lot of people wearing jerseys last summer in California and New York.

Well the MLS sells out games in Portland and Seattle. Why wouldn't NYC hipsters be the same? There has always been a European worship in that set. Plus you can't be seen liking the same thing as those guys in the "flyover states".

You guys are missing something, though. Namely, Kansas City.

Sporting KC's average attendance-

2011 17,810 regular season, 19,702 post season.
2012 19,364 regular season, 20,894 post season.
2013 19,709 regular season, 20,777 post season.

Capacity at Sporting Park? 18,467.

Every single game is sold out. Always. Everyone around here wears SKC gear... old yuppies in the suburbs, hipsters in Westport. The 2 local sports talk radio stations talk about them every day. Bars hang up banners to advertise that they'll have the game on.

So I guess what I'm saying, is it's not just for hipster cities anymore! Then again, we DO have Google Fiber, one of the world's best craft beers and an insular but extremely underrated music scene, so maybe we're a bit more hipstery than people think
whatever that means haha

Why would anyone root for England unless they had to?

People that do watch La Liga have a tendency to be annoying, mostly cause watching la liga in the first place is a sign of having bad taste and most likely being daft. The the league where they spent more time on the grass, playing dead, than actually playing football.

Supporting the English national team is even sadder than supporting the US one though, at least the US league is shit and they got no real good players, while England is always wasted potential and cunts. Not sure why anyone would ever support them. Now I do watch them play, but only because it's hilarious to see them fail every single time.

The average number of people that watch soccer/ football world wide is estimated at 750 to 800 million. These figures put soccer as arguably one of the most watched sporting events. These numbers increase significantly during the World Cup and other major championship such as the UEFA Champions League.

With Champions League finals ahead of us and the World Cup later on, I expect this year to break records entering 1 billion viewers.

Wow. Your sports talk radio actually talks soccer? That is amazing. And is this the beer you are talking about?

This seems late to the party.

Soccer has always been huge in NYC. Hell they had Pele and the cosmos in the 70s!

The large immigrant communities never lost contact with it.

It's pretty huge in Portland, but I think hipsters spawned here and multiplied throughout the US. I remember using that term before it became so mainstream.

I support the English National team despite being from Murica. I do so because when I first got into football it was mainly the EPL. Supporting United they had a decent amount of players on the England international team so I figured may as well root for them there as well. I chose this punishment and agony of supporting England. I agree that at least the US has had some good performances over the years as underdogs and there is always the hope that if they can get better players and systems that they could be a top contender. With England there is no hope at all.
