Some guy has been going around NYC playing his Xbox on the subway

Never mind your coworker, you don't sound like you know anything about NYC aubway.

Please, spare me the elitist New Yorker crap. I never said I did, just recanting what some of my co-workers say, who happen to work for one of the largest financial institutions in NYC. They live outside the city (NJ, Long Island, etc.) and come in on the trains to Penn Station, then they walk several blocks to work. But they will not ride the subway to get around the City when they are there. They tell me they don't feel safe these days riding the subway, Why is this so difficult to believe?

In the days of Uber I can see bankers never taking the subway.

They sound sheltered honestly. And that's fine. I know dudes like this.

It's just not reality.

I work in NYC often and use the sub at to get around all the time

It's perfectly safe. And easy with different apps telling me what trains to take.

I don't disagree, like I said, I was surprised. I've used the subway in NYC and didn't see it any worse really than the Metro in DC, for example.

But Uber has indeed changed the landscape. 9 times out of 10 I'm there with co-workers we use Uber (or cab it) to go to dinner. etc...

Shocker that your bridge and tunnel I.B. friends don't take the subway. For most people in NYC, the subway is the optimal mode of transportation.

Lol, I have no idea what that means. I assume it's a class warfare term in NYC? Gotta remember to use that one next business trip to screw around with my co-workers.

What? Weren't people getting pushed in front of trains just a couple of years ago?

I'm not from NYC, but travel a ton there on business, and few people from our NY office dare to ride the subway. It surprised me, honestly.

Like two or three people were targeted. Tens of millions of daily riders amounting to billions of rides, were not harmed in any way riding the train.

What he said is not elitist crap. You and your out of town friends, who only happen to come work in the city, really don't seem to know much. By necessity of only needing to walk a short distance after getting off the Path, your coworkers never take the subway and have allowed their insulated biases to continue uncontested for no reason. It's simply ignorance.

I work with six, seven and eight figure earners who have no problem with riding the subway daily. I see them in the morning on my my to and from work. Some of them do have drivers or live very close to avoid trains, but this is done out of personal convenience, not a fear of the trains.

Outdated term that refers to people who live outside Manhattan, especially the "outer" boroughs. No one uses it now and I doubt anyone would be offended. Some of us prefer not to live Manhattan, especially true of people in Brooklyn, Queens and SI who are proud of where they are. The expression was mainly a thing when Sex and the City was still on air (90s and early 2000s)... when living in the city + traveling to the other boroughs was seen as less common and a hassle. Using that expression would probably be seen as elitist and antiquated now.

They don't live in NYC. So they don't take the subway. That's it, and that's also the only reason you only take Ubers in NYC, unless you are made of money.

Can't believe you are still thinking about the pusher, I am guessing you don't go into any skyscrapers either after 9/11?

Lol ok dude. I've lived in NYC for a decade now. The MTA is safer than Philly's subway that's for sure. Only time the train gets super sketchy here is if you take a ride deep into a rough area. In my time here I've seen my share of crazy shit on the train but nothing bad has ever happened to me.

I don't ride the subway often because when I'm on business, car transportation is usually provided. It's my co-workers commuting in that have told me they won't ride the subway. I'm neither bias nor ignorant. I live in Miami, it's a smaller version of NYC.

The "pusher" made headlines news across the nation, that's why I mentioned it. Same thing happen in Miami with out of towners thinking there's a drug deal and shootings on every street corner. Or zombies eating faces!

Like I said, I've ridden the subway and it didn't seem dangerous to me. Hell, I've been to the Newark station, and even that place wasn't as bad as they said it was. Although the NYC co-worker I was with kept his back against the wall at the station the entire time, lol.

Gutsy. His shit could get jacked so easily. I could never in a million years do this.

Something tells me that someone that resourceful to get a working Xbox 360 setup on a Brooklyn/Manhattan train shouldn't be fucked with. Save those guts for the one that wants to try this dude.

Newark station? Your co workers are some irrationally paranoid and ignorant people, especially seeing how the literally work in Manhattan.

Do they live in gated communities?

Not taking the subway because you think it's dangerous is the equivalent of thinking Times Square is a hotbed of vice and criminal activity.

Yeah, Newark Penn I think it's called? It's the one that's connected to a Hilton and an office building with a sky bridge, where the buses connect. Close to the arena where the New Jersey Devils play.

I will admit, it did get a little bit rough around the station after dark. It's Newark New Jersey after all. If you walk there at night by yourself, you're a badass.
