Costlier to produce and higher memory cartridges were the hot thing. Games started climbing into the 32 Meg territory.

Disc games weren't at those prices as they were cheaper to produce. Now we've got a digital market place which completely eliminates all of the costs of physical media and retailers.
It dosnt matter ppl ll cope hard as they can to defend this since is Nintendo.

The thing that bugs me about the Switch 2 is it feels so low energy. The marketing is really cheap. Go back and watch the pre-launch of Switch 1 and you will instantly see what I mean.

This Direct was like super basic and low energy. I feel like we are back in Wii U planet..

The longer i think the less I want switch 2, those prices are fucking absurd. Especially for families, i suppose that's why that 1 card game feature is back.
I wonder if Iwata would have been better about this.

Count me out of $80 games lol. That'll be like £70-80 in the UK. Fuck that noise.

Was contemplating getting a Switch 2 but nope, going to get another handheld instead. Whether a new Steam Deck (whenever that comes) or a Windows/Xbox handheld.

According to Walmart MK, ToTK, Kirby and Mario Party are all $80.

DK and BoTW are $70.

Yes some of the enhanced switch 1 games are $80!

Can't believe I'm saying this with how long I've been waiting to see this thing and how fun that Direct was, but at $80-90 for games, I think I'll wait.

How are they justifying this to consumers in their minds? Do they think the ability to share some games locally thereby saving us having to buy multiple copies will somehow make up the difference? Is that why DK, a singleplayer game is $10 less? It's a neat feature, but not for every use case, and those prices are absolute nonsense.

They had better wake up and smell what they're selling before they gift themselves N64 sales numbers and have nobody but themselves to blame.

Just like the good ole days, I paid $80 for Street Fighter 2 back then. You guys will pay and like it (or not but will still pay).

I honestly feel like they're releasing now because of the leaks, but if it had been up them, they might have released next year. It just feels like the console isn't quite fully baked for some reason.

We will survive again. 😉

Lol. Makes me laugh when people pull up 90s prices for games and say "see! £75 a game is a bargain! £100 per game is bargain" etc.

LOL, no. It doesn't work like that. So many other factors to consider besides a like for like price comparison.

Been keeping a gamefly account going i havent used a bunch lately (to preserve "we'll take your word for it" return status) expecting $70 games but $80, jesus...

Yeah like inflation. $80 back then is like $159 today.
🤣😢

Adjusted for inflation it's actually even worse.

But the market was smaller then. People paid more, but they also bought less. If we were to decrease the tie ratio of software to hardware to 90's levels, we would be in crisis.

All talk of inflation aside..: Mario Kart is in no way worth $80. That's just daylight robbery.

I'm out. (Was never totally in, but now I am definitely out).

I hope they increase it to $120.
Fleece all the mindless Nintendo Sycophants to hell and back.
They deserve it for enabling them.
This is what they asked for.

Some games are worth that, but looking back at switch, only zelda was. Nintendo games get put on a pedestal and sorry they are not all works of genius.

This is true. However, there are other factors to consider.

The gaming market was a lot smaller in the 90s, which meant games cost more. Also, there was no DLC, MTX, Season Passes etc. Publishers had to make money on the game alone. Today, publishers squeeze a lot of extra cash out of a far larger market. Also no digital distribution back then. Games were sold at retail with store taking a cut.

The cost of producing cartridges was expensive. A cost passed down to the consumer. This is why PS1 games were cheaper than SNES or N64 games.

£75 a game is a lot for a person today because the cost of living is far higher. In the 1990s the cost of a mortgage, rent, water bills, food etc was a lot cheaper. Today we live in cost of living crisis. This is why some people earn more today, but feel pooer than they did decades ago.

Wages also haven't kept up with inflation. They were in the 90s and 2000s, but since 2008 wages (in the UK anyway) have stagnated while the cost of living has soared.

To sum it up, games should be cheaper and it's harder to justify slapping down £75 per game because people have less disposable income.

115$ ( most likely they will round up to 110$ or 120$ plus tax ) here in Canada

The word fuck off isn't strong enough when I have to pay 135$ for a game . You can shove the game up your ass.

What is insulting is this is the same price for digital games too.

I can understand a bit if the price increase was depending on card size based on the game. But digital store ? 80$ USD for a digital game ?

Length of most Nintendo games has always been in the $30-40 range for me. There's no rush or reason to get it but maybe they plan to have a Gamepass like service on Switch 2 because prices like these will make people subscribe easily.

Between the price hike and the limited number of exclusives, they're setting themselves up for a repeat of the 3DS launch. And the price thing is pure unforced error, it wasn't necessary.

not sure why people always seem to forget that Nintendo is by far the greediest of the big 3
Nintendo's incapable of surviving in a world where downloaded games can be returned for up to 2 hours.
When PlayStation moves to Steam's 2hr no questions asked policy it's going to make Nintendo look really bad.

I don't really care to be honest.
PS4 games used to be 60 CAD when the console came out and now PS5 games are 90 CAD. This is what happens when the value of the dollar drops (inflation). Nobody seems to care unless it happens to US prices.

In any case, the market will decide. If it is too expensive, the games won't sell, and they will lower prices.

Nintendo being greedy isn't new. Their arrogance is literally why PlayStation exists. So yeah.

I'm sticking to PC for now, as I usually wait for games to go on sale for around $15-$20, plus buying older PS3/Xbox/Xbox 360 titles for my collection.

I was considering a Switch 2, but seeing these prices, I'm out.

Nintendo games rarely go on sale, so I expect these $80/€90 titles to be the same price 5 years from now.

Inflation is real and someone always had to go first

Apple went first with removing the headphone jack and took the heat but now all phones don't have jacks

Nintendo is going first with raising game prices and they'll take the heat but I guarantee you Sony won't be far behind

Yeah, and that's the problem, as you said. The issue isn't the game prices—it's that their games very rarely go on sale.

My opinion is they should suck a massive dong and choke on it. €90 for a physical game is absolutely unheard of. It was inevitable that the times of €60 physical games was coming to an end, but I never expected Nintendo to be the ones to open those floodgates. Not that they're not a greedy corporation, but because I never thought Nintendo would actually have the balls for that, and they'd leave it to GTA 6 to usher in that new era.

And an increase of almost 50% is just insane, regardless of inflation.

I'm not a Nintendo guy, but I stopped buying Sony's first party games when they increased the prices to 80€. I can wait for a big sale or buy a used copy. The "problem" here seems to be that Nintendo games don't have big sales?

I think this pricing will definitely hurt their less wealthy customers or customers with other expenses, like families with kids. They may end up sticking with Switch 1 or buying one game and just playing it for months.

This is why Nintendo attacks emulation on PC. They don't want it shown that the performance bump costs nothing.

Nintendo is also following Sony's lead on paid upgrades. Not just following, but raising it. What remains to be seen is if Sony merely follows, or raises prices further.

On closed boxes with one online store controlled by the hardware maker, it's going to be ugly.
