I gave up consoles once sony went 70 Euro, I will sadly not participate again, just enjoying my steamdeck is tough enough. Though I think nintendo did well on console pricing. The pricing of everything else is upsetting.

If you thought those statistics for the amount of gamers playing older games was high, just wait until this pricing becomes an industry-wide standard.

Fomo will be a dead concept for 99% of games.

Edit: Also that 10+ upcharge for physical will definitely be another nail hammered down into the physical media coffin. Physical fans, you probably have one generation left.

Didn't think Nintendo would be the first to jump another $10 for games, and $90 for physical is nuts.

They'll only be able to get away with it for their absolute biggest games, the rest will have to be lower if they're going to expect high sales.

Not to mention the console is $450, and $500 if you get the bundle with Mario Kart World.
Here's what going to happen:

1. 3rd parties deluded their games are on par with Nintendo will maintain the same price
2. Games won't sell
3. 3rd parties will abandon the platform
4. Switch 2 will become a purely Nintendo machine

Let me tell you about my childhood SNES prices

With inflation it would be equivalent to $175 CAD today

I would really like to see how much the game upgrades cost. Considering how greedy Nintendo are and how much their fans suck up to them, they are not gonna do the 10$ upgrades that Sony did for PS4->PS5 version. I am thinking 30$.

Nintendo's ahead of the curve on this one.

They know Switch 2 will still be kicking when PS6 arrives, and they don't want another scenario where the competition is charging $10 more for games, while they're stuck honoring the previous gen pricing.

They saw PS6 games climbing to $80, so they wanted to make sure they're not sitting at $70 when it happens.

Costlier to produce and higher memory cartridges were the hot thing. Games started climbing into the 32 Meg territory.

Disc games weren't at those prices as they were cheaper to produce. Now we've got a digital market place which completely eliminates all of the costs of physical media and retailers.

I think it is to much but the market will tell Nintendo. remember when they initially released the 3DS it was overpriced and they dropped the price pretty quickly. I don't see that happening here, but they will adjust if the need to. $70 did not hurt TotK.

That's due to the larger chips inside cost more. RPG's were the biggest culprit. They also were mainly niche and didn't sell 5-10 million copies. The main games were normal price and sold more.

is it overtly expensive and stupid pricing? yes

will it still sell out and establish a new precedent? also yes

better start investing folks. Either that or start a revolution.

Whenever people post this they forget two things:

1) All games were physical back then, no excuses.

2) That there were rental businesses (like blockbuster) at every other street corner.

Does this mean we live in the age of arrogant Sony and arrogant Nintendo and arrogant Nvidia? Xbox truly the only working man's blue collar machine left.

Microsoft innocent? Lmao, they are the worst of the bunch by far. Gabe is literally the only benevolent dictator of our time.

Nintendo is probably testing the waters at $80 and once that takes off it'll be the new normal for next-gen.

There doesn't seem to be any value proposition for the increase and it sure as hell looks bad compared to current gen prices.

At least you got an awesome phyiscal box, a heavy duty cartridge with the entire game on it, and a cool manual that maybe even in color.

Now you get jack shit, and you download the entire game regardless if you have a physical copy or not.

That's not true. Peoples took the logo for games that have a game-key card feature and ran with it as if its for every games

Its not every games. Just like PS5 & Xbox also having this with discs that have a token and you download it. Metroid prime 4 Switch 2 edition for example does not have the game-key logo.

Examples without game-key-card notice :

Yes and it's all trash. Who cares if it's not every game. That means you have to pay attention to it as a customer. Another useless hurdle in playing your goddamn 90 euro videogame.

They've already confirmed a number of games (Odyssey, Pokemon, etc.) get free updates.

Otherwise it's $10 for games that just have graphical upgrades, $20 for stuff that actually gets new content.

Also seems some of these are included with NSO memberships.

Man I wish I took better care of my boxes as a kid.

Crazy that they are even making the distinctions. Just have it all free??

Nah for TOTK we added Medals on your phone and you can scan a QR code! WOW 20$ please

TOTK is $10, included with NSO if you have it.

The content one was Mario Party which seems to be more expansive content based on Sw2 features. Not sure exactly what, don't really care for it myself.

It's pretty consistent with the industry.

Nope. Nintendo unsurprisingly charging the most for games. That direct confirmed my worst fears for Nintendo; being dragged into the 21st century and taking it out on their consumers with high prices

The console industry yes, the industry of suckers who will buy anything.

What game ideas have you got T Teh Chosen Juan ?
we could get together with chatgpt, and in 30 minutes have 5 game concepts. the game hasn't changed in its basic form since the first. and when you play, the AI does the let you win, then they win, and then right at the last half of the last lap, OH! you won! after around 12, i'd imagine the "excitement" of that wears off. sure it's a fun experience to play with grandma at thanksgiving (look! she's so old and we're playing this child's game together! wild!!!!) and with children, but as a lifetime gamer, gamer who's worked in and around the gaming business for 25 years, blah blah blah, was left pretty underwhelmed with what was shown today. then add the $80 and you can just RAH-FULL! amiright?!

all that said, still going to pick one up! :P LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

IF you get the whole game no mtx no pay to win mechanics nothing behind any premium pay wall im fine with it

INFLATION has made $80 in 2025 basically $60 from way back in….. 2015

Listen...this means I'll be buying way, waaaaay less games from Nintendo during Switch 2's generation.

I'll likely buy used for a lot of them, but I'll be more selective on what I buy an Switch 2 will just be for those main exclusives from IP I like from them like Animal Crossing, Xenoblade and Luigi's Mansion (if we even get a 4th)

True, maybe it will be that way, but that is still a lot for what I see here. I have nothing against their games, but a lot of what was shown simply doesn't look like its really worth that price.
There will be less used games. With physical being 10 bucks more than digital, only collectors or people so sure they will sell it will buy them. But the used prices need to be high for the math and the hassle to be worth the extra 10 up front.

Yes as opposed to the PC industry where I pay $1000 for my GPU if I'm lucky.
Why would you need a top of the line gpu? That makes no sense. Im rocking a 3070 from when Cyberpunk came out, and im still getting 90fps in Ac Shadows at 1440p high.

Young children and families make up a very large number of Nintendo customers. I'm pretty sure everyone I know with a young family has a Switch. The adults still have to buy the games anyway, regardless of if it's for them or their kids.

My sister got one for her kids last year. She won't be upgrading to the Switch 2 with these game prices. I don't think most families will.

I think Nintendo have made a mistake with these prices. In the current economic climate, most people will be put off. Look at the reactions here. A vast majority think it's crazy and we're a gaming forum. Imagine what the general public will make of it.
My buddy I've known for 20 years has been a Nintendo fan #1 since I've met him and he's not getting it. He owns EVERY console and collects their first party stuff like crazy. It legitimately shocked me to hear him say he's passing, he's HARDCORE Nintendo and even paid me to grab a Japanese switch

Middle class parents will speak with their wallets, and Nintendo may do well remembering they are their primary audience.

I'll be buying only for exclusives, so it doesn't hurt me "that" much, but still it's pretty high.
Just confirming that exclusives only on consoles, then rest on Steam's sale period after a couple of years.

I saw a japanese picture saying Zelda Upgrades will cost 1000 Yen and Kirby's will cost 2000 Yen, which suggest a price of $8 or $10 for Zelda and $20 or $25 for Kirby. But Kirby is more than just visual upgrade, it includes a whole new chapter so they're clearly charging it in the package as a full blown game expansion or Nintendo-like DLC.

It's a weird gamble for sure. They've kept their development costs in check by releasing modest hardware. They could of set themselves apart by offering their software at a lower price than their competition on average, but went the opposite direction. I guess that's not terribly surprising with the $70 price tag TOTK launched at. Hopefully they introduce Game Vouchers for Switch 2 on the double.

It's certainly a gamble, but not one I think is going to pay off.

I'm actually thinking this could backfire horribly for them.

I can believe it.

I had a glance around online and a lot of Nintendo fans say they're skipping, although I'm not sure how serious they are.

Regardless, a lot of gamers are unhappy with the price. If we're unhappy then I can't imagine the general public will be happy with the price increases.
