Some signs of Retro Studios about to update/rehaul their website

Update: These aren't the Dragon Kongs you're looking for. The image elements presented are not related to any Nintendo IP, only to backend processes. Not something to get overly excited about. They don't alienate the fact that something is happening with Retro Studios web though. You can go about your business.

Soon a remnant of the past?

The decrepit and uglesome state of Retro Studios' current website has been a topic for several years. Whenever they have been approached about the subject, they have simply stated they'd rather work on games than web development. In late 2014 however, I received some information from them that they were working on updating/redesigning the website. But 2015 came and went without an update. Per contra, it now seems the site could soon be changing.

On December 6-7 last year, several new files were added to http://retrostudios.com/. These files are no longer available directly from this domain (I believe they were briefly up as part of a test), but were luckily captured by the Wayback Machine of the Internet Archive. The Wayback Machine captured 60 image files and one CSS-file (Cascading Style Sheets). These files can be accessed here. Let's take a look at these:

Images:

Most of these are icons in GIF-format, but there are some background files too, and some dealing with Dell SonicWall (security devices) for some reason.

Two of particular interest:

Code

I cannot provide the full contents of the CSS as it's too big, but I will provide a link (feel free to tinker with it, but beware of the formatting applied by Archive.org):

https://web.archive.org/web/20151206192259/http://retrostudios.com/swl_styles-5.0.0-1638059306.css

Here are some excerpts I found interesting:

Code:
/
body, p, td {
	font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif;
	font-size: 11px;
	color: #2E2F33;
	line-height: 15px;
}
a {
	color: #003399;
}

Overall text is gray (#2E2F33):

gray_texti6ssp.png

Links are blue (#003399):

blue_text4nse0.png

At least if I'm reading this correctly, someone in web development can perhaps confirm. Alternatively it's the background color that is blue, and if so it's in a much more pale nuance (#C1C8FA).

Code:
/* Some of the small gif images have a 1-pixel border which makes them appear raised up
 * slightly when embedded in text. Use this to bring them down to align with the text. */
.textEmbedddedImg {
	vertical-align: -1px;
}

Code:
/* keep row heights on FF3 when table height is fixed and limited number of rows are shown -
 * FF3 expands the row height to fill the entire table - adding an empty row at the bottom
 * of the table with the following class keeps in check FF3's unbridled expansionism.
 */
.swlTable tr.ff3TableFix {
	height: 90%;
	vertical-align: top;
}

Code:
/* The different widths below are due to the way the scroll bar is implamented
we are keeping these here instead of putting them in the IE css file b/c it
is easier to change the width if both numbers are in the same place. */

/* All browsers accept this, but we are targeting IE with this rule */
div.swlTblContainer table {
	margin: 0px 0px;
}

/* All browsers accept this, but we are targeting IE with this rule */
div.swlTblContainer table>tbody	{
    overflow: auto;
    height: auto;
    margin: 0px 0px;
    overflow-x: hidden;
	vertical-align: top;
}

/* Modern browsers accept this (not IE) and we are targetting firefox *
/* seen by ff2, ff3, safari (win), opera */
html>/**/body div.swlTblContainer table {
    width: 100%;
    margin: 0px 0px;
}

/* Modern browsers accept this (not IE) and we are targetting firefox */
html>/**/body div.swlTblContainer table>tbody	{  /* seen by ff2, ff3, safari (win), opera */
    overflow-y: auto;
    height: auto;
    margin: 0px 0px;
    overflow-x: hidden;
}
Who knows, we might be seeing this sooner than later? Nintendo's Third Quarter Earnings Release for FY 2015 is on Feb. 2 (with briefing the day after), and Nintendo World in New York is undergoing reconstruction until Feb. 19 (some have suggested to incorporate an NX related section/material). With what is coming in terms of NX, perhaps an idea for Retro would be to launch their new site and put up a teaser with an "Exclusively for NX" message. Would likely create some discussions. There you have it anyway.

I work in web development (granted, .NET), and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to see when looking at that very standard css.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
holy shit, that website is ridiculous

Yeah, it's really crappy, but it's also not the only non-impressive developer website. that shows that developer's websites are simply not really important for PR. Games are usually advertised on dedicated websites or on the websites of the publisher. So I wouldn't put much importance on this.

ALSO: METROID PRIME 4 CONFIRMED!!!

Seems like a lot of game companies don't keep their websites up to date. 2K is another awful one.

If you go to their official site there's no mention of Mafia III and it still lists defunct studios like Irrational Games, 2K Marin, and 2K Australia in their "About Us" section with no mention of Hangar 13 which is their biggest, fanciest current one. Pretty amateur if you ask me.

Having said that though, it looks like Retro's site might just be experiencing some maintenance.

This just looks like the generic SonicWall web interface. I see no reason to get excited.
Most of it is likely backend stuff, but at least they are doing something with their website. The most recent time before this they added something to their site was in June last year.

Rösti, how many websites do you monitor like this and how often?

Do you have a script?
I actually stumbled upon this by a mere coincidence, as I wanted to retrieve some old material. I don't monitor many websites.

It's likely not even related to them and instead the datacenter doing maintenance. The SonicWall SuperMassive is just an enterprise sized firewall (and in many environments, router).

Maybe Retro is gonna be restructured into a software support team for third parties and Retro Studios' site will take over the old duties of warioworld.com, which explains the security stuff.

3rd party web tools tend to be complicated bloated shit.

Imagine if they integrated Bootstrap how big this OP would be.

Yeah, pretty much this. All the comments in the code is even more proof that they just copy/pasted something or just used a third party tool. The OP surely can take that as a sign that they're thinking of doing something new with their website, but the .css-file itself have zero interesting information in it.

This is probably nothing. That looks more like they accidentally publicly exposed the sonicwall ui for a little bit.

They have been working on something since 2014, either that or they all went on a very long break. It's likely going to be an NX launch game, but I don't expect we will hear anything from them for a while still, not until Nintendo have revealed NX anyway.

What is it with people stalking Retro Studio haha. I remember once some GAFer was posting that he found their office and had a bunch of pictures of the outside that people were analyzing or something.

This looks like they're just upgrading their information security infrastructure at Retro Studios, and some pieces were exposed in a configuration phase/state.

Straws, the grasp for
