Someone explain Phantom Dust Multiplayer to me?

If you do quickgame, you won't need any arsenal, it'll be like chapter 1 and 2 battles from the scenario.

If you do an optimatch, you'll need to build up your arsenal.

I really suck at this game. In fact, I'd like to find a gaffer that sucks more than me. :(

Just trying to figure it out. Im building an arsenal n stuff, but only have 3 skills so far, hows that work

I'm assuming you made it to chapter 3. If not, that is your first step. Then, go to Mac's shop (up stairs by the dude name Know) and buy junk for 500 credits a piece. 2 pieces of junk will be available after every mission (10 skills) for 1000 credits. You also win skills for completing missions.

Then edit your arsenal (go to lab) and add skills. General rule is 15 aura particles and 15 skills. There should be a video tutorial in the edit arsenal section.

In battle, your arsenal is random. You start out with 4 skills already assigned. If you have aura particles use them immediately. More aura (mana) allows you to play more skills. Pace yourself... if you use all 30 skills then your health will automatically deplete.

...and if all that is too confusing, visit http://xboxphreaker.com for a more detailed explanation.

This game is incredible online btw. Just had a showdown for first place in a match. We ran at each other, I did hyperkick then he unleashed this skill on me that sent me FLYING off the bridge and through the rubble oh man it rocked losing.

I'll be on a skill shopping spree with about 30K that I have saved up and then head online tonight.

This game belongs with the greats this year!

Man, my copy hasn't arrived yet. I want to get some game time in before God of War and PSP comes out

I love it. It's good for me because I don't have 3 or 4 hours a day to practice to be competitive in a game like Halo 2. In Halo 2, I'll always be an average player.

With PD, you still need some twitch skills, but the game is more strategy. Also like a card game there is an element of luck with the random skill selection. The playing field is more level. It's hard to explain... the combination of everything makes it a more enjoyable game for me. It's just an awesome fucking game.

Can I recommend putting at least 5 defensive skills in your deck? I've noticed most Americans are running around without defense, which is nuts. Glacial Wall, Eraser, Fortress of Iron are all badass.

Oh I fucking LOVE defense, thats 3/4ths of my deck so far actually haha. Some reflecting skills and a lot of wall type things. My offense is mostly close range tho, I need to find a good long range.

As a bonus tip, if you knock a guy down near a ledge you can still move him by running into him. Use this to your advantage for an easy 3 point damage as you knock them off the ledge :)

btw, where should I order this online? Amazon went all screwy on me, so I cancelled that order. Should I go through Gamestop, ebgames or somewhere else?

Brick stores are out of stock everywhere, glad I knew someone who had an extra copy.

Oh some guy killed me today, shot the ledge above me with a missed shot but it came crashing down on me. Losing normally sucks but MAN this rocks.

Also had some excalibur type sword thing used OUCH, and big bomb is mean, last guy who used it on me busted through my low level psychic wall or something. MAn this game is fun.

Edit: Thanks for the tip Rastex!

I love how this game is all SHOWDOWN, power vs power, running leaping crashing rubble shit falling down POWER! Fuck yeah. My choice for xdude online goty. Single player is boring but important, at least so far.

I've had some awesome online matches, but the best was slashing a guy with the psychic sword for like ten damage and smashing the bridge underneath both our feet sending me and him plummeting to our deaths. I guess I should've thought of my own health level before doing that. But who knew the whole damn overpass would cave in?!

Knocking someone into a destructible overhang and having the rubble compound the damage just plain kicks all kinds of ass though.

I still need to get Live. I wanna play online. :(

Oh, and that Carcino boss is a bitch! After I beat it, I checked the Memory Box and it took me 35 tries to beat it! :lol

I recommend everybody get this skill in your arsenal(at least until the new players figure out not to draw most of the skills from their aresenal):

279 Diabolical Trick / Faith / Erase / 4 / ∞ / capsule / Erases capsule you are touching.

When you see your opponent only has three or four capsules left in his arsenal, take out the rest of his capsules with this and he'll slowly die from the zero remaining capsules penalty.

It's definitely a huge part of the appeal. It makes even weaker powers seem devastating at times. I love knocking those pillars down in the skyscraper level. The first time I did that got a pretty screechy "Holy shit!" out of me.

Another thing I saw in one match that was awesome... it was down to the last two guys and one had high health while the other was barely alive. So the guy with the high health just stood there, didn't move at all, right near where the other guy's spheres would spawn. The character got in that "I'm too sexy for this trenchcoat" pose and after blocking a few attacks, he unleashed hell on the nearly dead dude with a sword as he tried to grab more powers.

It was like he was swatting a fly. Awesome stuff.

Yeah in the 'showdown' mentioned in my first post I had blocked that photon rain skill or at least blocked it while it luckily missed me. Seeing those huge glowing orbs impact all around me and leaving these awesome smoldering craters in the ground, I was scared he'd do it again so I had to rush him for a close up attack. Unfortunately he had some powerful attack I didnt recognize that knocked me on my ass ;(

Has anyone used a melee rush yet?

Just get hyperkick or flamesword (hyperkick is better, since its cost is 2) and have like 3 or 4 aura and just hunt someone down. Since hyperkick knocks the person down, by the time they get back up you'll be able to launch another attack so you can just keep smoking them until they're dead. This probably won't work well with more than 1 on 1 though.

Is this directed to me?

Some more things I've learned.

Get a 3 school arsenal ASAP. While it's not absolutely necessary, there's usually one or two skills that exist in a 3rd school that could complement your arsenal very well.

Proximity mines ROOOOCK

I forget what it's called, but a blast goes around the player, that rocks as well.

Oh, and rock shower can be painful

Don't overlook the usefullness of skills like Jump and Dash. Dash can be used defensively to avoid projectile attacks, get back to your base faster, and also offensively to rush opponents. Hyperkick + Dash can make a pretty deadly combo. Jump is good for the outdoor levels since you can get to different height levels easily without having to take the stairs.

I used to do this, but now I regret buying a bunch of 3-school arsenals cases. If you can, fit your arsenal in 2-school or even 1-school cases. Here's why:

1-School = Aura Recovery Rate +30%
2-School = Aura Recovery Rate normal
3-School = Aura Recovery Rate -30%

I've only played quick battles against FMT so far but it has been fun! I love the destructable enviroments! Coolest moment was when I was under a bridge and FMT was on the top side. I locked onto him and fired at the bridge making it crumble to itsy bitsy pieces. It got him by surprise and luckily for him he had some jump move that let him jump off the bridge without taking any major damage! It is fun trying to mix up action between offense and defense!

Also, ability to use your custom soundtracks online = total rockage!

While it's not fighting music, I've got different tracks from Tortoise - It's All Around You assigned to each stage. Fits the mood of the game perfectly I think.

I dig the game's soundtrack a lot. I imagine I'll eventually try the custom soundtrack route though.

I really dig how the game feels like a fighting game but yet is a lot more open and free. It's sort of a next step on from something like Power Stone to be honest. The best addition though is the skills. Collectibility adds so much to a game like this. With 300 of them to find and learn how to use, replayability is through the roof online.

I still cannot believe Microsoft left Majesco get this for what must have been a song.

BTW, my Live ID is the same as my ID on this board. Just add "Dave Long" to your friends list if you want to play me online. I won't be on there in earnest til later this week as I'm working on reviews of a couple other console games but I'm dying to get in there and really mix it up again.

Is that free deal still going on with Gamestop.com? Was that through a rebate, coupon code, pre-orders only?

only for pre-orders on the 8th and 9th or something...either way...it ended already :(

That was a good game you and I played MAF. You died early on and since you don't have a mic, I couldn't really find where your dead body was to revive you but I almost took out both of the other guys. Bastards just kept reviving each other and I absolutely despise the stage we played on. Almost as bad as the panorama group.

Yeah, it was fun. No big. My MAIN problem tonight is a group of 3 in a team game room. They sit waiting for a fourth, then the last minute they all switch to the opposite tream, I suspect to try and all win money while I get clobbered. I left pretty quick.

I haven't even hit online yet. I'm just trying to finish the game. Just past chapter 5. The story is really good and has some nice twists.

yeah those matches were awesome tonight, gg's MAF. why dont you use your mic? or do you not have one?

either way the thing i like about PD is that you can pretty much step into the "ring" and be competitive even if you are relatively new. now if you are playing with custom arsenals then its a different story

*edit

I DONT HAVE A MIC.

now i see!

Yeah, just playing around having fun. That has happened to me twice now. They just sit in there and when you enter, next thing you now, it is a 3 on 1 and you get screwed. I hate that.
