Sonic 4 Ep 2 2 info revealed, New Physics Engine, new Graphics engine, playable Tails

When he heard the final arrangements for the new Sky Sanctuary theme, because it was one of the stages he originally designed, he thought it was breathtaking. During the production for Generations HD, the graphics were finished first, so he felt it was a good reproduction. At that time he wasn't even thinking of the music. Sky Sanctuary is a personal favourite of his.
This explains so much, both about Sky Sanctuary and about Iizuka's own games.

First was such a disappointing game that I could not care any less.

Oh, we're in for more of these trailers, huh... really love just seeing streaks of light over a speedlines background... waiting months to see half a second of Sonic running around a corkscrew.

It sounds like they've put a lot of extra work into something unnecessary. Making a "good" 2D Sonic engine shouldn't be an issue, they already have two they just released major products with. One is a pixel-perfect, highly modifiable, highly portable bitmap art-based engine, and the other is a polygonal 2.5D engine, designed for the 3DS and I assume portable to other platforms. Both of these feature physics that are close enough to the originals that they make fans happy, both handle different approaches. One of them was even developed by Dimps. Now maybe they needed to start development before either of these were really completed, or market-tested, but "2012" is a long time to port over assets and engine customization for a digital download game, and as we know the Retro Engine already functions great on Android and iOS devices in addition... unless they've added something really unique, I just don't see the point.

Nothing for Wii? Well damn, I really dislike having to buy sequels on different systems.

Maybe they're just going to port Episode 1 and release Episode 2 for Wii U. Sonic CD was the same way, it's possible the WiiWare format is just too restrictive, and Nintendo's not interested in altering it with their new console on the way.

I feel like it's possible the WiiWare version didn't sell too well.

But that did happen in the Mega Drive games! How many times do you play the levels generally? I mean if you're expecting just to play them once and just hold right to win without little challenge then I guess your criticism is valid for you. However, this was never the case for the Mega Drive games and you would always have to invest some time into the levels to be able to avoid enemy placement and traps, and especially so if you want to speed run them.

My criticism has nothing to do with hold right to win. I don't remember Marble Zone in Sonic 1 being hold right to win, but it wasn't luring you into traps either. It rarely gave you a situation where you had to learn by trial and error if you were good.

To be fair its been a couple of years since I played through the games but I definitely remember picking up Sonic 4 and saying this is some cheap level design and felt the same way about some of the levels I played in Generations. In fact, even a friend of mine who played the shit out of the Sonic games on the Genesis but hasn't been much of a gamer since noticed that Sonic 4 had some cheap level design without me even mentioning a thing.

And albeit I've never played through a whole Super Mario Bros game, I've played through a significant amount of New Super Mario Bros on DS and some of it on Wii and never felt those games had cheap level design.

I disliked the level design more than the physics in part 1.

Torch puzzle: Never Forget

I didn't mind the Torch gimmick until you had to fucking light them up to rise platforms in a specific order. Not only was it annoying but it also broke the pacing. What were they thinking?

Oh and FUCK those small rotating rooms with water and spikes.

WiiWare is dead, no sane company wants to put up games there anymore. Is anything even coming apart from Retro City Rampage?

After what an ugly hype monster Sonic 4 Episode 1 became, Sega's going to have to do a lot better than that shitty teaser trailer to get me excited.

I've not clicked on any links or videos, but why do people keep talking about facial hair and a mighty beard?

Does Sonic have a beard in this one? Is that the new gimmick?

There's pictures above, during the interview, Ken had his beard colored and trimmed to look like Tails' tails.

It's... not the best of promotional choices they could've made.

I believe the only larger atrocity is Sonic 2006
Maybe Bomberman Act Zero
This. As much as people don't like Sonic 4: Episode 1, Sonic 2006 was an utter tragedy.

Bomberman Act Zero is just depressing. :/

Iizuka-san wil be pleased this was translated. now a larger audience can read his wise words.
Iizuka-san's wisdom should be heard by everyone.

(No prob. I thought some of the bits in the interview were interesting nonetheless. It's too bad the interview was posted so late in the year post-release, though.)

He also said Emerald Hill Zone was a favourite in the fan voting. But it had too many similarities to Green Hill Zone in terms of atmosphere and stage design, so they ended up picking levels that varied in terms of design and atmosphere overall if there were too many similarities between the top stages that were voted for.

If it's true that they completely revamped the physics, let's hope they used Classic Sonic from Generations.
I think they said they had no current plans for the Classic Sonic model post-Generations.

"we really listened to the fans, new physics, new graphics"

"now here is a trailer that doesn't show any of that shit"

are Dimps still developing?

>half the stages in Generations are the first stages in their respective game

What? Who the hell did they poll? Emerald Hill is like the worst first level in the classic games. I'd call it my least favorite level in Sonic 2 if Oil Ocean wasn't so boring.

That's certainly true.

SEGA employees from around the world, and I think they asked fans on Twitter and Facebook.

Also, I concur with your dislike of Oil Ocean.

It's really Nintendo's fault for having such a small file size limit. This episode is going to be I assume even bigger than the first and they had to resort to MIDIs for the music to squeeze episode 1 onto Wiiware as it is.

I can understand not doing WiiWare, but why not 3DS? Or the eShop?

There are demos for retail games on the eShop that are more than 330 megabytes. That should be more than enough room, especially if they properly down-res the assets for the 3DS's screen.

It's probably coming to the WiiU eShop which is yet to be announced.

But why not 3DS? If it's coming to Windows Phone of all things, I don't see a reason why not.

Hopefully it'll be sort of a Generations 3DS situation where they realize "Oh wait, Sonic games do well on Nintendo platforms! Let's also port this thing to 3DS."

Poor Huelen.

He didn't really strike me as bad, but very enthusiastic. Though I wasn't on GAF at that time, so I guess I wouldn't really know.

That was when I joined, and just as I was beginning to really enjoy him as a poster, bam, dead. How sad that Sonic Ep1 was the first major thread I posted in. Time flies!
