Sonic CD (Retro Engine) |OT| Where We're Going, We Don't Need Backbone

basically copying my other post, but i think how you define a sonic game will really make or break sonic cd for you. for me, the elements of exploration, traps, platforming and time travel are really awesome for me. brings a lot of variety and individuality to the game, and speed-running is still very much possible if you're willing to put the time in.

however i can appreciate how some people may not like it they're wanting something more similar to sonic 2 or so.
Chinner stop using that argument. Maybe somebody wants something similar to Sonic 1 which had traps and platforming but also far better level design? You're creating a "DO YOU WANT A PLATFORMER OR GOTTA GO FAST??!?!" dichotomy and I won't stand for it.

Okay, so I finally reached Wacky Workbench.....

First impression is...the US music here is awesome!

I was hoping you guys could give me some good time traveling strategies for both acts too. I like to see the good future for each act, but I'm having trouble finding clean stretches of land.

Once you hit a signpost, find a flat/regular piece of land and do the peel-out (up+X) into the bouncing floors

First act. Get to the top of the level where the two grey cylinders are. If you get crushed by either cylinder, it'll drop you to a past sign post. Carefully work your way back up where you arrived from the cylinders without activating the Past power. Peel out (Hold up and press jump) in the tube ahead of the two grey cylinders to time travel.

Second act. Do what 0 HP says.

I only have one more Time Stone to get.

I'm on Metallic Madness Act 2.

Yeah.
I have actually made it to the very end (without being touched) holding over 150 rings. But then time ran out.

On the Sega CD, Sonic CD actually saves your game at Act 1 of any given zone you're on, so as a child I trained myself to be able to complete Metallic Madness Act 1 and Act 2 with 50 rings, and that's how I ended up getting all of the Time Stones.

That bites. : /

I can barely hold on to 50 by the time I reach a goal. On the last three zones, I didn't even come close. >_>

Just finished this up, and now Sonic CD is my favorite Sonic game.

Each zone was visually mesmerizing and it felt like they were all designed with different play styles in mind. Some spots work against the player, other paths influence success, and it's that obstacle course design that I love. There are so many ways to explore and challenge yourself.

The bonus stages are a fun break too, and the backgrounds for them are awesome. Boss fights seemed pretty easy, but some of them are kinda inventive and funny. The last battle was anticlimactic, but at least the credits music and animated scenes rocked.

And the music is great! Here's are a "few" of my favorite tracks:
Quartz Quadrant (Present/Japanese)
Palmtree Panic Zone (Present/American)
Wacky Workbench (Present/American) The BEST
Palmtree Panic (Good Future/Japanese)
Metallic Madness (Good Future/Japanese)
Tidal Tempest Zone (Present/American)
Collision Chaos Zone (Present/American)

All the composers involved with this game did a fantastic job.

Holy shit. I just happened upon this by chance. A remix of Collision Chaos Bad Future (Japan) in Sonic Chronicles.

I honestly don't know whether to find this hilarious or repulsive. It's AWFUL. I've seen a lot of people link to the Sonic Chronicles remix of Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Doomsday Zone as evidence of how bad the soundtrack is, but hearing one of my favourite Sonic tracks be butchered like that is something else.

For reference, here's the original version of Collision Chaos Bad Future (Japan).

I've heard that a lot of music tracks in Chronicles were just MIDI files grabbed from the internet and fed through a conversion program. I'm willing to believe this.

wow a dark 8-bit bad future theme of Collision Chaos
Youtube Sonic fans apparently doesn't know what the fuck 8-bit music is. :|
OMG...

They must be really young since they have such a... unique... perspective regarding how 8-bit music sounds like.

This Wacky Workbench one is so catchy. Edit: This Famitracker/VRC7 remix of Collision Chaos is nicely done too.

So, is it fair to say that the PC version of this has been stealthily dropped? Seemingly along with the Casino Night Pinball DLC for Sonic Gens?

Cheers Sega. Nice one.

Not fair to say, no. There's something weird going on between Steam and Sega at the moment, because even Sega seemed confused the Casino Night DLC didn't show up when it should've.

Plus there's no real reason to not release Sonic CD PC alongside all the other Sega ports and rereleases that are on Steam, unless they're afraid of the engine being reverse-engineered and hacked or something. But I seriously doubt that.

I don't share your faith at all. There has been 0 communication regarding Sonic CD (which, btw, is listed on Sega's own site as 'out now' on PC), and two weeks have passed since they said they'd 'look into' where Casino Night DLC went (supposed release 26/12/11) with no further communication.

At this point, I'm seriously skeptical.

I really don't think Richard Jacques actually touched any part of Sonic Chronicles, he just agreed to let him use his work.

Ah, checking around, it seems he only composed one or two tracks for Chronicles while some other unknown Bioware composer did the bulk of the soundtrack.

What's the premier version of the game here folks? For 2D platformers I detest the 360's dpad, which is what I'd use for a PC version too. So unless something is wrong with the PSN version, I think I have to go with that.

Thoughts?

So the game was on sale/discount on US PSN and I decided to get it and finally play this game.
...and after beating it just a few minutes ago I...don't like it very much.
For one thing, the 'theme' of the stages didn't stand out, in Sonic 2 each stage's theme stood out and you felt you were playing in a Grassland, a chemical plant, ancient ruins, a casino zone, etc.
...in Sonic CD, the stages didn't feel like that to me.
I can't really say much about the layout and design of stages TBH, but the Time warp posts positioning irked me at times, not to mention how tricky it is in certain areas to gain enough speed to warp to the Past or Future.
...and man are the Special Stages hard @_@.
Furthermore, Eggman's battles weren't that interesting, not even his final battle, he was among my biggest letdown in the game.
I think I only died 2-3 times against Metal Sonic. I personally do like Plamtree Panic and metal Sonic's boss battle themes. Controls were pretty good too.

Overall...not among my fav. Sonic games. I had to play it though in order to give a fair judgement and see if I would like it or not though.

I noticed that the game was on sale on XBLA last night and couldn't resist at 200 MSP. I played it for about an hour, got to the third or fourth zone I think, having collected at least 2 of the time stones along the way. I've gotta admit, for as much love and praise as this game gets, I'm really not terribly impressed; now mind you, I didn't play any of the Sonic games after 2, and I never got past that damn temple level with water sections in 1. Sonic's drowning still haunts me.

What was probably the biggest letdown for me -- and maybe I just don't know how to unlock or set it -- was the lack of the famed "Sonic Boom" song during the intro. Is that MIA in the XBLA version?

Played 1,2, 3+K to death as a kid, never really played CD.
This is... not as good as I expected. Too many springs bouncing you around in random spikes and boss battles seem way too easy It's annoying in certain stages trying to get the speed up to time travel.

I did like searching the stage for the machines, reminded me of the game gear games, looking for the Chaos Emeralds.
