Sonic Origins arrives June 23rd, 2022!

Ridiculous, trash tier DLC practice.

Probably a glimpse of the Super Game practices to come.

Not supporting this shit, and I am a huge Sonic fan.

This collection is a joke. 40$ for slightly enhanced versions of games you can buy for 5$ each. Then another 5$ for DLC and another 4$ for even more DLC and all of this for a franchise that was never good.
You must really love Sonic if you always come to Sonic threads just to take a big word dump.

You really have a hard on for coming into Sonic threads to spout this exact same fluff every single time. Time for a new schtick.

Same. it's dissapointing.

We got SEGA to make Super Sonic free in Forces and we also got them to redesign Sonic.

We need to critizice the DLC practices more, all of these are extremely minor, but neat bonuses that should've been in from the get-go.

Day one for me ! Hey SEGA,

I'm big fan of classic Sonic games and this should totally be right up my alley. However with no physical edition and all the DLC weird decissions... Looks like a hard pass

Nostalgia Junkies

Trainspotting Heroin GIF by Nick

The industry is a bad dog, if you keep rewarding it for shitting on the rug and making you pay for it, it'll never stop.
Stop generalizing. I own all the Sonic games already. I reward companies all the time for games that have QOL improvements that I think I will enjoy. Besides that, this is being developed by the same guy who made Sonic Mania. Since he has a hand in this I feel like I want to support his endeavers.

I am a propenent of backing up and preseving any physical cartidge game I own too. I have a Retrode 2, Retro Blaster, a Turbo Grafx Card Dumper, a Sanni Cartridge reader, a hacked Wii to dump all my GameCube and Wii games. I dump all my Neo Geo CD games, Saturn games, PS One games, and PS2 games. Should I go on? I love the old style games much more than the new shit.

I don't need nostalgia, because these kind of games are the kind of games I enjoy on a daily basis. That doesn't make me hungry for nostalgia for nostalgia sake. Most AAA games turn me off with their hand holding, over produced cinematic experiences, not to mention the over priced DLC. I am not gonna cry over some optional paid MJ music. Plus you think MJ's estate doesn't want a big daddy's pay day too? It probably didn't come cheap. So please move along with your generaltions I've got some fun games to go play.

On one hand, this collection does a lot of things right and will most likely be the ultimate way of experiencing those classics. Having missions and those animated movies are a nice touch. On the other hand, the way this game is getting sold is just weak. Hard Missions, extra music, mirror mode. Those things are neat extras and should be in there from the get-go. Mind you, all the other content you get via DLC is just "whatever, who cares?". This is hardly the worst example of predatory monetization practices. Far from it. Everything important seems to be in the standard edition. It's still a shitty practice though and as result, I won't boycott this game, but I won't buy it until it's 20 bucks. At the very least have the decency to make the starter pack always free (it seems like it will be only free if you pre-order)

So to actually clarify... from what i've seen

There's only two versions of the game, standard and deluxe, everything else that isn't included in either is DLC that you can buy separately in the standard version

Everything that isn't in those two DLC's are already included in the game itself, the first one just unlocks things earlier.

Coins are in-game currency, not microtransaction.

While this makes it less awful (thanks for the scare) I still think it's dumb for them to do stuff like this, and it's poorly worded and confusing. Why have a DLC to unlock things earlier? and why have two versions when the deluxe version should've been the standard version, it's literally 5 dollars more expensive than the standard one.

Also one of the packs is free DLC. The preorder stuff is just early unlocks, but you will still be able to play it in the game.

But why did they have to show it off in such a confusing, poorly worder why like a Ubisoft styled chart? I won't boycott it but I won't buy it until it's cheaper.

Sorry, what? They're locking all these features away behind DLC? It does make it sound like the MJ Sonic 3 music will be in, but only as paid/"Digital Deluxe" DLC.

Yeah, it was announced sometime last year, but we haven't had a lot of details other than the games included.

Gotta pay those royalties somehow.

Funny how it says "coins" and not rings.

Coins are a collectible currency outside of the games, separate from rings. We've seen it in Colors Ultimate aswell.
The DLC also doesn't seem too awful like I explained, it's just that SEGA worded it poorly and put it in a Ubisoft style chart making it seem worse than it actually is. I would wait for the game to get a lot cheaper like someone else requested.

Well don't I feel dumb npw.

It's incredible how this one single dumb decision to try and gouge the fandom for an extra $5 tarnished the entire discourse around the announcement. Corporate greed resulting in decisions that hurt their own interests, love to see it.

Every single YouTube channel talking about this is specifically talking about the convoluted dlc scheme, I haven't seen the announcement in a positive light on YouTube or social media yet.

One interesting thing that's missing from the NA website is that there's a story mode where you'll apparently play through all the games ( 1 > CD > 2 > 3&K) with new animated cutscenes on specific points. Seems like a neat way to play the games again.

SEGA does not understand the 2D Sonic fanbase on a fundamental level

So many easily fixable things surrounding this release

The fact that we haven't gotten a full blown anime style remake or at least a Mania style games of 1, CD, 2, 3&K is crazy talk about hating money
I mean this is all 4 games in the Mania engine.

Yeah but if its a good collection then it will all be fine in the end. I remember a lot more people talking about Returnal at $70 last year. Then after people played it they were happy.

$40 and $45 isn't that bad.

Now after seeing a picture of those missions, I'm worried about the function of lives being something akin to that retarded thing of Colors Ultimate. Man, I hope I'm totally wrong. Why they have to ruin my hypes that way.

Yup, and they still can right the train. Get rid of the DLC nonsense and go with $40 for the whole package.

Delving into the release information further, I'm a bit disappointed that there's no physical release. The next disappointing item is Denuvo added to the PC relese. Right now it looks like I'll be getting the digital deluxe edition on Switch, and on PC at a later time should Sega wisen up and remove Denuvo. Modding the PC version is going to rock! It would be sad to see Sega keep Denuvo in the PC release indefinitely. If that happens forget about it! Not gonna touch it! If a physical release ever happens I will definitely get it on Nintendo Switch. I love collecting and playing physical games on that system.

Love the widescreen treatment Taxman has done to these games, can't wait for this. With any luck, this will come out around the same time as the TMNT games!

Pointing out that sonic is a crappy franchise and that this collection is basically robbery is a community service. But don't let that stop you from spending your money on Menu DLC though.

And your community service won't stop anyone else from spending their money, but keep on skipping that record.

Critizicing about a company's choices is a good thing. (Cough Nintendo Cough)
But stating a franchise you don't like is objectively bad simply because you don't like it isn't exactly community service.

Besides, it isn't really as bad as it seems, there's only 2 versions, the other 2 are DLC and one of them is free, the other is just early unlocks for stuff that's already in. Again it's not awful, but I personally wouldn't support it until it gets a price drop.

I love how your only choice is just dismissing other's arguments, spamming laughing emojis and acting like your opinions are facts just because you don't understand the franchise very well. It shows how you can throw any critical thinking and maturity out of the window just because it's cool to hate on something.

Question!

How is this any better than this?

Emulation accuracy/quality. As an example, if you care at all about sound accuracy, that's something you don't get from a lot of the ports that have happened.

If you're after a 95% solution, there is no shortage of options out there, including the mega collection on PS2. Even Sonic Jam, a fantastic port on the Sega Saturn, had some compromises to make it work.

I'm just glad to have Sonic 3 & Knuckles playable on my PS5. Finally. All the extra bonus content will be nice too. I have the Sega Genesis collection on PS4, but the emulated sound is all wrong on all the titles. I'll be patiently hoping more titles come out. Seriously, give me Skies of Arcadia.

This is a compilation of all 4 games remastered in the same engine as Sonic Mania, while that is just a compilation of ROMs in an emulator.

So it's free of slowdown that is there even in emulation, is able to go true widescreen, has cleaner PCM sounds, has the improved physics from the Mania engine, especially for Sonic 1 and CD where is no longer has the stupid speed cap, they are able to shoehorn in all kinds of different improvements like proper time attack modes, all 3 characters in all 4 games, doesn't have to adhere to Mega Drive limits so the special stages in S2 and S3K are able to run at full framerate instead of the quarter framerate of the original, etc.

It's just a big QoL improvement on the games, it's not something you get by emulating the ROMs.

Plus this has Sonic CD while that doesn't.

The Mega collection plus has a crap ton of games that this doesn't, including Sonic 3 & Knuckles and playable Knuckles in Sonic 2. (You have to do a lot pointless tasks to unlock them)
I have sonic CD in Sonic Gems collection.

Regardless, I see your point, but it becomes harder and harder to re-start and re-buy the same 3 games every time thery release a new updated compilation.

This one does have S3K, it only doesn't have them separately, but it's almost pointless to play Sonic 3 or SK alone. Outside a few layout changes, S3K is the best way to play it.
And Knuckles in Sonic 2 is not really necessary because these remasters allow you play any game with any characters, including Knuckles in Sonic 2.
The only thing this doesn't have is the non-Sonic games, but there are many collection with those nowadays.

Plus that Sonic CD port isn't all that good, you are forced to play with the US soundtrack in Western territories and it's missing a bunch of effects that were cut from the old PC version of Sonic CD and small inaccuracies, and you have to deal with SCD original physics engine, which just wasn't all that good.

I understand what you are trying to say, and I won't make a blanket statement that EVERYONE needs to play this, but for what it's worth if you really like these 4 games, these are by far the best versions of these games and there was a lot of work put into this if you account for the development of the RE versions of S1, S2 and SCD, because it isn't just a bunch of ROMs bundled with an emulator. All games were rebuilt from the ground up on a new engine, and until now on consoles the only taste of this we had was the 2011 Sonic CD port. It's not just the same thing again, there is a legit reason to get this over any other version in the past.

I hope they're solid porta but man does that table just reek of how modern business practices have ruined some of the excitement.

It's almost as if they want to deter for the more loyal fans and have us wait for a sale.

The dev is OK, good reputation. As said before, the SEGA practice is not making any sense.
DRM, DLC, monetization, versions of the same game for a hell old game and that panel looking more like a 'How to play Anthem', full port or not.

I mean, asking money just for make the Angel Island move in the main menu? WTF is that?

I was holding off on buying any more Sonic games on Switch waiting for this. All I have is Sonic 2. But no physical version, millions of versions/DLC tiers, all for old Sonic games.

Sega, as usual, can go suck it. Until you guys sort out whatever issues you are having I'd rather use my god damn Genesis carts than be a party to this garbage.

Maybe in a few years grab the complete ultimate not-raping-you-for-old-music-version on sale for $15.
