Possibility of being decent if you get over the fact that we were lied to about how the game will play and classic sonic gameplay isnt what you want.

That being said I wanted classic sonic gameplay so .... AGAINST.

As a non-Sonic fan, I'm actually somewhat looking forward to this game. I honestly don't know what to expect, whether it's "old platforming Sonic" or "new speedy Sonic", but it definitely looks worth a try.

I don't understand how so many people can call a game bad before they play it, but I'm not in to the series, so yeah...

Aww, poor Huelen. Got a permaban and the ONE person who he didn't want to make the thread for the game who he mercilessly died for... actually made the thread. :lol

I should AIM him again...

And yet I *know* I've seen you mocking Devil May Cry fans for being upset about DmC. Interesting, that.
Last I checked, I wasn't defending Ninja Theory's ability to make a competent Devil May Cry so much as I was calling out people freaking out about him supposedly looking like Twilight dude and holding up classic Dante as a hallmark of excellent character design and using that as an argument for saying that the game will suck because of it (and let's be honest here - there is a lot of that going on in the DmC threads despite claims otherwise). It's no different from the freakouts people have had over green-eyed Sonic, to which I continue to say who gives a fuck.

A better example would be the new EDF, where I have damned the game specifically for being made by Vicious Cycle. :p

I don't really keep up with XBLA, but PSN has sales quite often, and SEGA has participated in those sales frequently. I mean, nothing crazy like 90% off like you see on Steam or anything, but 50% off happens a lot.

never noticed this - cool, will likely grab it on PSN, depending on how the demo feels. gonna be salty when they put it all to disc next year, though...then again, i thought they'd do that with penny arcade and several other series i was getting no XBLA, never happened.

How so? I think it looks great, it captures the visual style and feel of the classic version and looks damn sharp at the same time.

So you are saying Sonic and Knuckles is shitty.

So we shouldn't pay attention to anything you say.

Here's the deal I loved Sonic when I was younger and I used to play the hell out of the older ones with my cousins and friends. We all hate this game.

Sega just wants to make a quick buck and is going to sacrific the only good Sonic series that has gone untarnished so far. They could have left it as a classic series but now they have to drag it through mud so they can make a bit of money.

So I want this game to fail horribly. The programmers got their money for doing the game I just hope Sega doesn't make a lot out of this and realize that it was a mistake to fuck with the classic Sonic formula and then call it "classic Sonic".

Hey if people want to enjoy the game for what it is go ahead.

Just saying that if the next God of War had Kratos rollerblading around and shooting a rocket launcher to kill bad guys it could be a fun game but not God of War 4.

Although the second example is more like a retracing of a video clip than an actual game, your telling me that this looks and plays better than this?

What's so miserable about this game using the Rush engine is that for Sonic Advance 1, Dimps tried their hardest to copy the Genesis physics as closely as possible.

Which begs the question, why the fuck didn't they just use that engine? The final result would basically be that video - same physics, updated graphics, everybody's happy!

Wait... So the first episode is coming out $15 right?

So if you plan on getting all the Sonic 4 episodes, the entire game will come out $60?

I would have gone with an equation more like (Sonic 1 + Sonic 2 + Sonic 3 & Knuckles) - most of the things that made those games great = Sonic 4

That formula is completely equivalent to what he posted though. Did you miss the part about 15 years of Sonic evolution?

Sonic Advance 1 is alright. It's certainly not "up there" with the classics, but its pretty fun in its own right. It feels like a well made fan game and its worth playing through. It would be a far more honest attempt at Sonic 4 than what we have now.

That Mushroom Hill video looks distinctively fake. Mostly in the way Sonic moves. It doesn't look like someone actually playing the game. I'd imagine a 3D remake of Sonic and Knuckles would be pretty awesome, but it wouldn't look like that video no matter how faithful. The UI font for the HUD is pretty atrocious too.

Also, that speed-through of Act 1 is pretty impressive. One of the few things I was worried about was the fact that Sonic uncurls, but it doesn't seem to be an issue there.

I feel like playing Sonic 3 now... bah.

That's because you're exactly right. And I'm pretty sure they admitted that fact?

Actually, according to the YouTube info itself, that video was apparently animated over footage of the game itself. Which means it was intentional bad playing, or they just suck. :lol

Either way, he (or she?) probably could have picked a better zone to anime then Mushroom Hill.

Three episodes, so $45, puppy.

Think of it as a less shitty Final Fantasy IV: The Blunder Years and you'll be alright. Maybe.

Man, imagine a Sonic game by PlatinumGames. A Mikami and Kamiya collaboration. God damn.

Sorry for the slight derail. I'll probably get this when it hits Steam and goes on sale.
Yeah, I know I'm assuming here, but it's pretty likely.

Pretty sure I'll enjoy this thread far more than the actual game. It's already delivering.

Looking at that zone list...holy shit, could they be any more carbon-copies of previous Sonic levels?

Green Hill, Casino Night, Labinryth...shameless. Even the boxart is a copy of Sonic 1's, but shitter.

It's only the first four zones out of twelve. Besides, most of the 2D titles have begun with a similar looking zone or zones.

I'm aware of this, but at least Angel Island for instance had a unique design and style that seperated it from Green Hill, particularly once it was lit on fire. Splash Hill almost looks exactly the same (except in the shitty art-style they're going for with this game).

Doesn't really bother me, as long as Episode 2 doesn't begin with a zone as terrible as Mushroom Hill. The only reason I can stand to play Sonic and Knuckles after that terrible zone is because of the awesomeness of Flying Battery.

Given what they're going for, starting off with four familiar zones isn't a bad idea at all. It'll make room for more unique zones in Episode 2/3.

Day one purchase for me (one of the few games I don't need a trial for.)

Also the hate this game gets annoys me. People essentially decided after watching the debut trailer that even though it looked great it had to suck so they started acting really weird about it. I dunno, I just feel like if this were a Mario game people would be more forgiving of things like beta test videos that obviously weren't going to be in the final game but because it's Sonic they'll just pretend it is anyway...

I thought FFIV:TAY was good. :T

Anyway, I'll probably wait for a sale. Who knows, this game might be surprisingly good.

People are bitching about the price, but I'm more concerned with the release schedule. Episodic content rarely works simply because too much time passes between the episodes. Telltale gets this right with each of their series, but adventure games tend to work better in that format. Breaking up a platform game into episodes seems silly to begin with but will be much worse if it takes them too long to deliver the next episode.

So do we have any idea when that might occur?

Huelen died for our sins.

And I hope there'll be a PSN demo of this. I'm tempted to get it, but as it looks more like Sonic Advance 4 HD than a real Sonic the Hedgehog 4, I'm vary of how this game will play. Doesn't help much that it looks kind of ass compared to some fan game efforts.

The physics looked waaay too floaty, and sonic looked like shit.

I don't think there's been any word at all yet. And if their release schedule for this one is any indication, I wouldn't get too hopeful.

All I see in this thread is a bunch of insane sonic fans who don't even know what they want. Aside from mandatory homing attacks and the physics shit sonic 4 will be Awsome.

That sounds pretty awesome in theory, though in reality I'm not too sure how a Sonic game by Kamiya would turn out considering he said on Twitter recently that the only Sonic game he has played is a bit of the first one.

I downloaded the soundtracks for 1 through &K last night out of nostalgia's sake, and I still think that 3 has the best soundtrack. Nothing else comes close to Ice Cap, Hydrocity, or Launch Base. (Although Chemical Plant comes close)

4 is going to have crappy music, isn't it?

Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the first true video game I ever played, as well as holding some of the fondest memories of bonding with my younger brother I have.
I have to detatch myself utterly from the idea that this is a true proper "Sonic 4", or I would probably punch the ground so hard that an earthquake would drag the Sega offices into the center of the earth.

See for yourself:

Splash Hill: 1 | 2 | 3
Casino Street: 1 | 2 (the iPhone level) | 3
Lost Labyrinth: 1 | 2 (the iPhone level) | 3
Mad Gear: 1 | 2 | 3
Boss Music | Other Boss Music | Final Zone | Invincibility/Super Sonic theme

Difference being that at least Final Fantasy IV: The Milking Years already had the whole game in the code. People cheated and hacked the unlock keys after the initial download.

They haven't said anything about how many episodes there will be.

Mushroom Hill is packed with little animated visual elements. It isn't everyone's favorite zone, but it's a great choice if you're an animator doing a remake.

It's ok. Modern Senoue start to finish, only with crappy synths all over the place instead of his guitar, which is what I suspect the whole soundtrack was actually composed for.

The shift to a hip-hop new jack swing sound for 3 was a great shift for the series and totally fitted it. It's also no surprise that the MJ stuff is the best in the game, though Hydrocity Zone (particularly Act 2) is beyond brilliant. And Kuckles has flying Battery which is godly. I also liked the addition of having different tracks for each act as it provided some extra variety.

I wouldn't say 3 is a clear winner. Given 2 has stuff like Metropolis, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, Emerald Hill, Mystic Cave, etc. But I rate them both very highly as game soundtracks.

Sonic 1 is all class too, but it doesn't quite match the compositions of its younger brothers. It does have Starlight Zone though.

As for 4, from what I've heard I'd say the compositions themselves are pretty good, but god some of those synths are too retro for their own good. They actually manage to sound more dated than the Genesis games. Melodically though they're pretty solid.
