I'll probably want to play this at some point, but I think I'll wait until all the episodes are out and it's a full game.

Any word on the iPhone price? I'm tempted to try it out, but if it's $15 like the other versions, I doubt I'll jump on board. In fact, I feel that would kill iPhone sales right there as people just aren't used to playing $15 for iPhone games. Even massive games such as Chaos Rings are cheaper and that was at the top end of the scale.

Also, they better have targeted 60 fps or else their entire effort has been wasted.

Worst case? $15 iPhone version running at 30 fps.

Cool mix.

For years I heard nothing but how superior the EU/JPN soundtrack was to Spencer Nilsen's stuff. After I developed my own sense of opinion and stopped being a child, I realized Nilsen's is totally hot. (Still, I really like the EU/JPN one as well).

Really, it was like you were an outcast if you didn't think the EU/JPN soundtrack was the greatest thing ever. Hopefully that crowd of people is gone.

Yeah, I also quite like them both.

The original soundtrack is very "808 State", which is great, while Nilson goes for something pretty different. I'm glad both soundtracks were made available.

I do recall being super disappointed with this as a kid, however, simply because I did not expect the difference. I had some Sonic screensaver thing which included all of the soundtracks in WAV format (low bitrate, but still nice). I had not played Sonic CD at that point and the soundtrack on the screensaver was taken from the Japanese version. So when I finally got my hands on Sonic CD, I was expecting that music, not the stuff created by Nilson. At the time, I was disappointed, but I've come to enjoy it in the end.

Equivalent of $10 in Japan for the iPhone, so I'm pretty sure it'll come in around that price in NA.

got the wrong hit
is the iPhone version of this likely to hit bang on midnight GMT like a lot of iPhone games do? Or are we likely to end up waiting till later in the day?

I LOVED SONIC 3D BLAST

Sorry but I just had to get that off my chest. Sure this game seems to have its faults... but who am I to judge? I love Sonic 3D Blast, maybe I'll love this too?

So the "good" stages aren't on iOS :-/? I thought it was weird that they'd keep both and mess up the act count but they should have gone with the new ones...

I *think* it's going to hit tomorrow GMT but I'm not sure.

I liked the Saturn version's music. The game was alright but I had more fun with Sonic R.

What do you mean by that? The "good" stages? What content differences will there be between the different versions?

Back when the game was leaked, there were two particular stages that really caused an uproar, the one with the mine cart and another that was a one screen pinball where you just had to achieve 100.000 points and the door to the giant ring would open. Later on, Sega announced that the game would be delayed and they'd work on making two brand new traditional levels to replace them and at the same time they announced that the iPhone version would be getting two exclusive levels, that is, it just has the old ones unremoved. But in the video up there, Ruby says that the two new levels are exclusive to the console versions of the game while showing one of them (which actually looks pretty cool).

Other than that, there aren't many more differences. The iOS version has a gimmick where every time there's a loop the entire screen rotates, possibly the framerate might be lower and maybe it won't have the world map, but that should be about it.

Yeah, it was alright. Not a great Sonic game, but still fun enough. Would have been infinitely better with real analog controls, however.

The playing card gimmick is a pretty neat idea. Nice alternative to the slot machine.

I never played the Saturn version of 3D Blast, only the Genesis one. I remember being slightly disappointed, but not thinking it was necessarily bad.

Were there any major differences in the Saturn version (besides the special stages)?

This is the color of the original shield for Sonic, Ruby:

NOT GREEN

Game looks better than what we saw the first time, physics still are a bit floaty, backgrounds are bland at times and the spinning legs animation is ugly as hell, but it does look better.
I'll try the demo, but 15$ is a bit too much.

These are pretty much my thoughts, I also rather liked the new Casino act 2.

Watching that cnet video, fuck the first thing the player does in the playing segment is jump and fucking air dash for speed, FUCK YOU SEGA :/

Should have just crouched and spindash, right!? Right!?

Stupid spindash, ruined sonic for me. I preferred the have to build up speed and have trouble doing it, rather than going crouch button button button instant speed!

Okay, they literally directly ripped off Casino Night in every respect, including mechanically. I mean, you're supposed to keep the movement physics the same and innovate with level design, not the other way around!

Spindash = you are in a ball, jumping from a ball in classic games meant you had no air control, plus you are rolling and have to be stood completely still to activate the spindash.

Air dash = jump and jump again, instant speed and you are running so it's like a lame shortcut to "earning momentum" as ruby would wrongfully explain sonic 4.

Fucking weirdos

"After 16 years and countless games and appearances, we finally get to play a new side-scrolling Sonic game in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. A direct sequel to Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 4 propels the franchise into the world of HD gaming but remains loyal to the hard-core fanbase that helped make the franchise so iconic."

Yeah... no.

Looks like Casino Street Act 2 is a huge improvement.

well it's not like he could say "here is a new sonic ad...I mean sonic 4 game that will please people who like sidescrollers but has completely alienated the original fanbase in the process unfortunately due to our complete lack of respect to what made the originals memorable in the first place, I sorryz"

Here's a review I did of it earlier this year. Hope it was the Saturn version you liked. Cuz that one is far superior to the Genesis version. Love that bonus stage music.

That CNET video has seriously got me hyped for this game now. Homing attack be damned, that was classic Sonic/classic platforming right there. Loved the card bit and Mad Gear looked like a tough but fun time. Finally gonna HA that Shellcracker motherfucker!:lol

The new Casino Street Zone is actually pretty neat. I still wasn't a an of the other Casino Street Zone shown, but what can you do.

I just got a decent amount of money, so I might buy this at full price, but I think I'll still hold off for a sale.

As someone who will be buying multiple versions for a comparison article (and cuz the Wii version comes on my day off and I can't wait), this is nothing more than a nice nod and shoutout to the fans. It's not like they're giving you a BJ for buying multiple copies.:lol

Putting your name on a website for buying multiple copies of the same game is not a "nice nod," it's more of a "fuck you buying the game once isn't good enough so if you want us to acknowledge your existence buy unnecessary extras."

It's just capitalistic exploitation of the sonic-obsessed.

What happens when we find GAF members?

As for the people buying all 4 the youtube comments will probably be enough humiliation. With lots of repetition of "Sonic 4 4 times".

The list here will be updated every few days for two weeks following the Xbox Live launch of the game next Wednesday. The 27th of the month will be the final day to submit pictures of the versions you own, and following that Ken and I will start filming the video for anyone who sends in pictures to prove that they're truly a super-collector and huge supporter of the game.
