Beat Donley Kong Country. Decent, but not great platfomer, in my opinion. I loved the factory levels, but hate that there were only two of them in the entire game. Could have sworn there were more for some reason.
I was sure you'd hate Blackout Basement , 2 factory stages, a million caves and mines, welcome to Donkey Kong Cave Country.

Awww yeah, Three in March.

Hitman: Absolution
Layton 5
Warioware Inc, MEGA Party Games
I think my friend is throwing me his copy of Absolution in the week so I guess i'll be joining you for that one.
Currently playing Warriors Orochi 3 so I figure that counts as my first game, mashing has never felt so fulfilling.

I played through the first level of Mark of the Ninja. It's amazing.
Of course!
This reminds me that I need to dive back in at some point and unlock that last suit type, I think it's terror related which is always fun.

mirror of fate is Castlevania's Sonic 06

It really isn't, and I could never take seriously the opinion of anyone that made such a statement. It's downright silly. It's such absurd hyperbole that it renders anything you've said before, and anything you might say in the future, completely invalid. Like, you might've been correct about something in the past but now whatever you'd said is just plain wrong. Legitimate space-time continuum alteration shit.

I say this as someone that's beaten Sonic 06 twice and really didn't care for Lords of Shadow or the Mirror of Fate demo.

Castlevania Judgment?

I dunno, I'm struggling to think of a truly awful Castlevania game.

I had forgotten about Judgement. 64 is clunky and kinda crummy and all, but it's problems are more of a case of the game being a typical victim of a poor transition to 3D.

Yeah Judgement probably takes the cake. Sure it's not a buggy mess, but... yeah it's the only one I can think of that fans are pretty united in not liking.

Castlevania Judgment?

Castlevania Judgement is a fun 3D arena fighter. It has doofy Death Note redesigns sure, but it plays well enough.

I haven't played any other 3Dvanias, but the idea that any of them could be compared to Sonic 06 remains preposterous to me. It seems that people are treating the comparison too lightly. That's the kind of comparison you retain for the most broken games. It's not for the mediocre games or things you just kinda didn't like, it's for the Cheetahmen and Superman 64s of history.

Okay that AC4 trailer was pretty legit. Great cinematography. Great narration. Great style. Let's see how the game turns out.

It's really hard for me to get excited when I'm still wiping AC3's awful taste off my palette. I certainly don't feel like blindly giving them my money until after the game comes out.

Castlevania Judgement is just about the worst CV game I can think of, and even that was a (somewhat) competent arena fighter in the vein of Soul Calibur. Worst thing about the game were the redesigns (except for Cornell, who turned out kinda decent).

I didn't like MoF's demo, but I think Sonic 4 is a more apt comparison than 06.

Blackout Basement wasn't too bad. Contrary to the name, a lot of the jumps weren't as blind as I thought they'd be.

I'm probably going to look into buying DKC2 since everyone says it improves on everything.

If it wasn't for the setting (pirates are amazing), I would've rolled my eyes faster than the Wii U sales drop. Something tells me the problems from III won't be fixed, seeing as its being pumped out rather quickly.

AssCreed 3 was a new kind of terrible. Awful end to a story, boring protag in Conner, and such a bug-filled mess. Not sure if I want to take the plunge with 4 this time.

So. Like. I'm almost finished Rising. It's been a fuck-awesome ride so far. Let's see if it holds up!

Hold up; I thought you were kinda enjoying it. Did the ending just ruin the entire game for you, or what?

Very vague AC3 ending spoilers
Because while I didn't like the game overall, the ending was just an extra kick to the back because it was so fucking stupid.

Just saw it. Perhaps it's my cynicism talking, but I don't really care for CG trailers anymore. Yeah, that one had great scene direction and dialogue narration, but it isn't necessarily representative of the overall product and thus I cannot bring myself to get excited for it.

Not after 3.

Also, kayos... I assume you saw this thread. I am not taking my (there is spoiler text in these links; I do preface the spoiler text with where it takes place as usual) complaints in the OT back. It is a terribly constructed game by people who have no concept of pacing, proper game design, proper cues, and proper and cohesive writing. Outside of Haytham, the ship battles, and tree jumping, I cannot find many things redeemable about the game at all. The Desmond sections were completely wasted. And I still think Connor is a terrible protag.

What a disaster.

Give it a year off and put Watch_Dogs out.

Also, lol:

Forced to find fun? On a forum where players strive to get S ranks on super hard difficulties while needing to find hidden enemy encounters by luck or from a source (Metal Gear Rising), you're telling me it's too much to ask of the player to visit a subset of missions/objectives found in game?

It really isn't. CG trailers are definitely never the true representation of the final product. It's really annoying when there's all these trailers of announced games with little or no footage of the actual game itself. I hate it.

Gameplay first, gaming industry! I'm not playing games for the CG! I mean, I'm not actually against CG trailers themselves but... if that's all you're gonna show me, then yeah... :/

I think the only CG trailers to really get me hype this gen were for fighting games, and even then, that was because there was a fanservice aspect to it (Seeing Capcom and Marvel and/or Tekken characters in one setting) so it was arguably justified there.

But for big AAA singleplayer experiences? Yeah, give me a gameplay trailer before anything else.

It goes back to the conversation of as graphics improve and developers have the ability to bring genuine life to their visual art designs, given the success of some cinematic-styled games like Uncharted and Final Fantasy (yes Final Fantasy) would developers stick to advertising the game with its CG, or would they add more gameplay? The latter seems more like something for a press conference; it's not like they're going to release a long trailer of fluid gameplay or things you'd do in the game with a HUD on top. I get the feeling that the marketing department thinks that's rather unprofessional or it doesn't do a decent job at capturing potential buyers' attention.

For example... Another complaint about AC3 was that it ditched the protagonist's moral convictions and the stealth/assassin mechanic in favour of showing off cool kills, in favour of the cinematic gameplay standpoint. But considering AC3 probably sold the most out of the entire lot of AC games, I get the feeling that AC3 benefitted from its CG trailers, and the fact that in some of the trailers, the kills looked utterly cinematic as if they came out of a movie.

So truly, what do developers think their audiences want from their games? Are the people who wish to see gameplay more than CG in the minority? Perhaps so.

Like... there's a reason why they showed off AC: Revelations with its intro cutscene + good setting music. I remember everyone loving that trailer. Shit, people love FF Versus just because of 1-2 CG trailers.

CG trailer talk will always remind me of that one E3, 2008 I think where Sony didn't really have much to finish with so they threw out this 20 second long GoW3 CG trailer that showed pretty much bugger all.
It was enough to hype up one of my friends at least.

There's a few good ones out there but it does suck to have a game announcement and no actual gameplay representation to go with it, splicing CG trailer stuff with gameplay SSBB style is a happy medium.

Though AC4 could have a trailer of nothing but gameplay and I wouldn't give a damn at this point, that franchise has been run so hard into the ground its burst through the other side of the earth itself, I jumped in and out at AC2 and that will do me just fine until they pull their fingers out and shake things up instead of seemingly doing the opposite.
But it's Ubisoft so i'll just expect more glitches and fluff.

Yeah, I agree with the last bit. If they want to do it, splice it with some gameplay. But make the gameplay just as enticing, and show lots of stuff off.

*Ahem* Boy howdy, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is going to be the best game in the world. Have you seen these two CG trailers (1, 2)? Noctis has an awesome personality!!! LOOK AT THE STUFF HE CAN DO IN CUTSCENES i bet you can do that stuff in-game. omg i bet they have a romeo and juliet relationship. omggggggggggggggggg this is going to be the best ff ever

*eyeroll* Give me a break. And when they finally show gameplay, apparently some of it's changed already. Granted, the combat looked really boring as shit. I can't get myself hyped by CG trailers anymore. Really tired of it. If you want to make your game a movie, make it a movie first and foremost, then. I really don't care for the cinematic style of video games at all; they lack immersion or "stuff for the player to do". QTEs don't even count.

Bleh at QTEs!

I get the feeling that they're trying to salvage that setting (especially since they probably have some of the island/coastal assets lying around still), and they want to do it quick. Still, I don't like this plan of a attack. Give it a rest, release Watch_Dogs and go back to the drawing board on this one.

I feel like they need Patrice back, but whatever.

I was, but the ending was a really really awful way to end the modern storyline. I was able to tolerate the bugginess and Conner's personality to an extent because I really wanted to see how the game would end, but what I was presented with...it was the straw that broke then Camerupt's back.

So follow the Heavy Rain example then, the unholy matrimony of QTEs and Cinematics topped off with a plot that is fundamentally flawed for so many reasons, apparently such things can be glossed over if you found it emotional, well I found it unintentionally hilarious at least . An odd tangent there but the game movie fits your last sentence perfectly.
It also makes me wonder how a MGS game could be if the emphasis on cutscenes was chopped down to make more room for greater game length and more varied stealth scenarios, ah it feels like a distant dream.

I actually had no idea that there was a gameplay focused trailer for Versus at all, all i've ever seen is people fawning over some Noctis CGI renders with the belief that this game will be the redemption title for reasons I don't know but judging by what you've said up there I don't really want to know.

It seems like an odd title to hedge their bets upon, currently I would guess that most FF fans would approach anything new with an air of cautious scepticism due to numerous recent events but Versus 13 is different because it's been in development hell? surely that casts an even greater shadow of doubt, well I wont stop them from wanting to believe.

That's something that's got me bamboozled, it's called 4 but it's still based around 3 if i'm not mistaken, seems like a waste of a numeral if that makes any sense.
I do actually think it's the most interesting idea they've had going out of the last batch of games but it's arrived too late and too close to the last game, Ubi almost boasting about having a enormous and probably mismanaged team of people working on it only serves to make me steer further clear of it.

judging by the reactions of that /v/GA thread... I'm glad I closed out within the minute that stream began.

although props for them for apparently ranking Rhythm Heaven Fever pretty high in their 2012 OST of the Year list

yo that /v/ show is really fucking lame

It was really cringy. The Kawata part early on in the stream made me close it. I have nothing against the game (as I've never played it) but that whole "_____ IS THE BEST CHARACTER IF YOU DISAGREE THEN YOU'RE A DUMBASS" joke was annoying. I knew it was going only downhill from there.

yo Noi, how's dat Jak 3

I had to stop after Jak 2, that shit was just...

Not Noi, but I thought Jak 3 was a little better than Jak 2.

Both nowhere near the awesome of the first Jak and Daxter though. I don't think we'll see another game like that from them again...

Jak 1 > Jak 3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jak 2

It's still set in the god awful grimedgy bullshit direction Naughty Dog took, but at least it's a better game and not half-bad at times. Doesn't shy away from having too many "we couldn't come up with anything here" turret sections though.

One day, they'll make a timed escort mission turret section, underwater, with Jak 2 checkpoint system, screen tearing, and inconsistent framerate

And on that day, the bottom of the game design barrel will have been found

Added more horrors.

Checkpoint puts you back at the beginning of the 10-minute battle, in front of an unskipable cutscene

and there's an insta-death QTE out of fuckin' nowhere right at the end, for that cinematic effect

Do tell. I don't mind, just spoil tag it.

To get the full impact of it, you would have to have played through the game up until it took place, but I'll give it a shot. The turret sequence in Spec Ops: The Line was critique of the power fantasy element present in most turret sequences. Once you have access to a turret on a helicopter that your squad has commandeered, the main character convinces all of them to stay near a communications tower and gun it down. Your squad seems dissappointed by your decision but they begrudgingly follow your orders fly the helicopter back around the building. The main character then starts to cackle with maniacal glee as you mow down everything in your sights. You end up leveling the entire building, slaughtering dozens of innocent people and destroying the only practical means of calling the outside world for help. The intended effect is for you to be disgusted by what has taken place and realize just how far the main character's mental state has deteriorated.

In less words, they used a tired first person shooter trope to demonstrate how hollow and messed up these sorts of things are. I never liked turret sequences to begin with, but now I'll feel even more empty when I encounter them going forward.

Edit: In another not-Sonic related tangent, I might as well mention that I'm halfway through my very first playthrough of Link's Awakening. This game is fun (inventory juggling aside) and it's also really weird. I had to laugh when I was able to run around with a Chain Chomp before the third dungeon.

Yikes, that game sounds like it does nasty things to one's psyche. But the sequence certainly sets itself apart from the rest o_O

I spent over 3 hours last night to figure out why my copy of Sonic Generations was running at 15 fps instead of the glorious 60 fps that I've heard so much about.

Turns out, the game was running off of my integrated graphics card and not my NVIDIA GPU because of their "awesome" Optimus technology.

I'm never buying a NVIDIA product again!!

Sonic Generations at 60 fps is indeed glorious!! Omg my eyes melt at the awesome!

If you're upset at nVidia wait until you try an AMD card lol

Ahahahahah. You won't make it chapter 9.

The music is good though.

I'm in chapter 5 so I'll probably make it.
