Sonic the Hedgehog Community Thread: Green Hills and Laughing Iizukas

Splash Hill had too many moments where you fly off a ramp and get hit by a row of Bubbles with little time to react. It gets me every time. It was an okay stage though... kind of bland though.

Casino Street was decent up until the last half of Act 2 with those annoying flipping card platforms. And then Act 3... oh god those cannons. Leap of faith is not good design, Dimps.

Lost Labyrinth I didn't mind this zone until the torch puzzles and that really ridiculous rotating tiny water room. Arghhhh.

And Mad Gear... well, I wasn't a fan of Metropolis to begin with. And to top it off they added that annoying crushing wall in Mad Gear Act 3...

I actually replayed the game last month in attempt to get all achievements but I kind of ragequit on the 4th or 5th special stage.
The crushing wall stage is one of episode 1's few genuine highlights for me, best music in the game, genuinely intense and it's actually quite well done. Those tilt platforms towards the end are a bit naff though.
The game just feels so unremarkable, it's hard to really praise it in any aspect.

I have to agree with that. If I go back to it at the end of the year to see if it's even worth an honourable mention. I'm pretty sure I'll feel the same. It looks prettier, and team attacks--once you get used to using them--are beneficial for speedrunning/cheaping out on a level.

I dunno what I wanna put on my list. There're still things coming out, but my issue is that I've played a lot of stuff that I'd put as honourable mentions or in the bottom seven. A lot of what I've played isn't really Top 3 material.

Man I hope ASR:T is good.

There's also those awkward to control flight sections and the pointless team double attack where you hit a box and mash buttons to kill the three enemies that might be on screen, the game feels like it was lacking thought, like they just threw things in because it might be cool.

While i'm in day 1 for ASR:T i'm beginning to get a bit dubious with how things are going, launch dates seemed to keep fluctuating before settling on next week in EU all of a sudden (I swear it was different last month), the most recent batch of newly revealed characters are incredibly underwhelming and most suspicious of all the price is surprisingly cheap, I don't know, it sounds like it might end up a tad rushed.
But i'm just being negative for some reason.

Yea the backgrounds for those special stages is pretty distracting but you have to be pretty gentle with the controls, babying them along allows you to get through it easily. I almost beat the 3rd stage on my first try but because I was a bit too twitchy, I lost right at the end when I almost had it...=(

Is anyone here getting the Wii U version of All Stars Racing? I wouldn't mind racing against you guys when the Wii U comes out. :>

I'll probably get that instead of ZombiU.

My Wii U games this year: New Super Mario Bros U, Scribblenauts Unlimited, SANIC Racing. Maybe I'll squeeze Assassin's Creed 3 in there if the Wii U version is good.

You should see Milla. She has one thigh-high on. I could take a shot of it, lol.

I'm wearing two!

If you like Episode I, you might not like Episode II.

I like Episode I and don't like Episode II. Usually when I see those who consider it better, they are the ones who disliked Episode I in the first place.

Episode II is a mixed bag, it is superior to Episode I in many ways. While its best level designs are better than the best of Episode I... it still managed to have its worst level designs to be much much worse than the worst of Episode I.

I don't think either game are good but if I had a choice, I'd likely pick Episode II despite that.

I won't stop you but tell me what do you think of White Park Act 3 when you get to that... part.
I think everyone is way overstating the ice sea lions. Most of the time they just act as "you must be going this fast to access the better path" gates like countless other obstacles in Sonic games and in the event they actually cause you to die then you learn from what happened and don't die on your next attempt.

It took me too many damn attempts because it's way too easy to screw up. Not to mention you have to WAIT out to die. It is absolutely awful. It is even worse in co-op when both players don't drown at the same time, so that eats up all of the lives. Ugh.

Let's all agree that Episode Metal is a pile of puke though.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 is better in places and worse in others, Ep 1 feels a bit more consistent but Ep 2 is just about stronger but by the smallest of margins, it's long drawn out boss encounters and Wing Fortress Act 1 are almost long enough that the time spent in those stages specifically feels like more than the actual platforming stages.
Visually the stages are a lot better, they draw on themes from previous games but stop short of outright theft like Ep1.

The problem with that one infamous section is that you can do nothing else but wait out Sonic's air supply into he drowns, no heading back until they're off screen so they reset and you can try again, nope, you just have to sit through the countdown timer and perish.
It's hardly the toughest thing in the game but it is genuinely poor design.

Also it serves as an instant death trap that isn't very apparent at first. And to think Dimps' loves with death pits were bad.

Of course? I don't think Sonic 2 deserves any free pass for its bad level design (which thankfully only makes up a small portion of the game). I hate Sky Chase and Wing Fortress (which Episode 2 also shamelessly copied, Sky Fortress Act 2 was good though). At least most of Sonic 2 was really great though, I wish I could say the same to Sonic 4 Episode 2... I really wanted to enjoy that game.

Sure episode 2 ripped off wing fortress but you know what? it actually made it slightly better, granted such a feat isn't exactly hard.

I noted that. Act 2 was actually enjoyable, although really easy. The music is fantastic too.

Not as good as SonicGaf's love for death pits.

I have a feeling those voted for Altitude Limit weren't even from SonicGAF. Lemme check the first results because at that point, only SonicGAFers voted for it.

EDIT: Nevermind. Altitude Limit was in 2nd place at the time (tied with another stage). I want to know WHO voted for that stage. Confess whoever you were!

Yes Act 2 is pretty solid, shame Act 3 was a bit lacking with the flight sections and the go and make a sandwich canons from S&K making their unwanted return.
Act 1 was pure cack.

So is there actually supposed to be an effective way to beat silver in Sonic 06? I just finished watching the latest game grumps and while i've seen the fight before this time it looked like 10 times more broken, it genuinely was no use!

It's a poorly done genre switch that goes on too long and isn't fun in the slightest, that's my problem.

If you mean the Sonic 2 original then that's short enough to be tolerable but it's still kind of lame.

Hey, hey, what was wrong with Sky Chase?

It's boring

Sonic 2 is a great game, but the last 1/3rd of the game has always been my least favorite. Metropolis Zone feels like it goes on forever with it's three acts, and it's some of the most ANNOYING enemies in the entire Genesis series(FUCK YOU PRAYING MANTIS THING THAT POPS OUT OF NOWHERE AND FIRES METAL BLADES AT ME). Sky Chase is relaxing aka dull, and Wing Fortress aka Bottomless Pit Zone.

^ Pretty much.

I'm probably alone in thinking Oil Ocean was a good level though.

Oil Ocean zone is fine, it's like the anti bottomless pit zone if anything with all that gunk, granted it makes the zone kind of easy but Sonic 2 is pretty much a cakewalk until Wing Fortress throws its unclear and flawed design in your face.

Mystic Cave i'm not so big on though.

I thought it was a nice change of pace.

Metropolis Zone is just a bad level in general, it having three acts instead of two is just icing on the cake.
And since the Mantis enemies were already mentioned, I feel like I should bring up the other annoying enemy of that zone, the fucking crabs. I swear the hit box on them is broken or something. I can only ever reliably hit them if I am standing behind them and spindash into them, every other time I try to attack them there is like a 90% chance I going to get hit instead even if I'm nowhere near the claw.

In fact, "fuck you, you're getting hit anyway" seems to be a running theme for Metropolis Zone. Mantis enemies will just be in your path and unless you know in advance they are there you are getting hit, the starfish will often get you in the screw lifts with your only option for dodging being to jump off the lift and do that part again, the crabs will hit you when you try to attack them and even the early stages of the boss are heavily reliant on luck before you make an opening in Robotnik's shield.

HOW ABOUT A CHANGE OF PACE?!

I actually wouldn't of have minded Sky Chase if it wasn't too long and slow. Music was nice at least. And I like the level transition cutscene.

Having taken the time to listen to them now, I like them - although I wonder if they follow the originals a bit too strictly.

In all fairness... Sonic Generations sort of does that. Or by original you mean emulating Generations' style too strictly?

I used to hate Oil Ocean, but the more I started realizing how awful Metropolis Zone and it's bullshit is, the more I started liking OO in comparison.

I want to know what that box to do a combo attack was for because there was nothing on the screen that forced you to use it other than try to scramble for points/multipliers (but even then I don't recall it being plentiful.

...And it was only in, like, two places in the entire game! wtf.

I'm wearing two!
Man, I wish I could wear socks like those. They always look cute. Because I went to high school in a uniform (which apparently suited me a lot), and my dressing style isn't... well, it's business casual + jeans, I guess... people have a really hard time seeing me let loose and dress in stuff that doesn't fall into business casual or strapped tops/halters/skirts/dresses in summer, lol.

I didn't buy my first pair of thigh highs until I was in uni. I used to have to wear knee socks when I was in high school since it was part of my uniform (thigh highs were banned, and regular dress shirts were banned (because we didn't adhere to the only one button can be unbuttoned rule)).

Your PC sort of resembles mine... kind of.

Also, I found some nice remixes I could use for the fan game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG4w8sY1pAo&feature=relmfu

What do you think?
For the Bridge Zone one--the intro can be taken out, but the main portion is fine.
I like the instrumentation for the second one, but I feel like it could be more original or do its own thing at some points.
The third one sounds almost exactly the same as the original, but more high-quality.

Not bad, but like Shadow Hog said, some attempts at originality can be taken (and should be, imo).

The rest of my clothes are mainly jeans, shorts, and t-shirts. I need more girly stuff but I'm so lost...

Sky Chase is intentionally slow and relaxing to give the player a moment to cool down between Metropolis and the final stretch of the game.
