They did better than I had expected, but as expected, they had issues with the Classic Sonic version of the level.

Going by their reactions, I'm not sure if they liked the level much.

But looking at the Planet Wisp Generations designs right now and knowing that Generations' Planet Wisp was decided just as Colours was being developed, it seems that the Generations team just took the concepts and did their thing. The 'running from the grassy field' thing must have been the very first concept, or at least one of the first concepts...

Sega's Sonic fanbase consists of the 85% people who like classic and hate modern, the 10% of the people who like modern and classic, the 4% of people who like modern and hate classic, and the 1% that likes Sonic 06.
lol at the bolded.

There exist more fans who are children than fans who are adults, you know. For some kids, Sonic 2006 was their first game. @_@

OMG, this is surprisingly very good. Wow.

Is that true? I was wondering why they didn't include the section where you run up the side of the wall, which is what I remember from the level right at the beginning.

Incidentally, I've been disappointed with the Pokecapn LP bar one of the later videos. They've sucked throughout basically (apart from Planet Wisp, of all levels), and there's only been one moment - 'HEY KNUX WHAT'S UP!' - when I laughed out loud from what I can remember. I've actually found it kinda boring.

I hope when they start speed running I find it more entertaining, because now it's pretty dull.

Yeah, it was in a 4gamer interview. Colours wasn't done when they started putting Generations together, and it would certainly explain the emphasis on Spikes and Rocket throughout their respective stages which heavily contrasts the use of both wisps in Colours.

So far (still reading it and it's really damn long), it's mostly stuff we already know. For a question about how the Sonic games are usually released two years apart, that it was strange the we got Colours the previous year and Generations this year, Iizuka responds that says that Generations and Colours were developed almost at the same time.

From how he's saying it, it seems like Generations 3DS was almost like an afterthought. But since the 3DS was new, and Sonic was popular on Nintendo systems, they decided to make the 3DS version a reality. With Generations HD, Sonic 2006 and Sonic Unleashed, they had expertise/production know-how with those systems and engines and they were developed in a timely manner. Generations 3DS needed more time for development since it was on new hardware.

Around the time of E3, he says that Generations HD's stages were pretty much completed and they went into an "adjustment period" with that version (I guess to polish it up), but the 3DS version was far from finished at that point. Green Hill was pretty much the only thing they could have showed.

He talks about how the stages were picked, but we already know how those got picked. Because Sonic Colours was not completed at the time the voting for stages started, Sonic Team picked the Colours stage themselves.

When asked about other characters, he said the inclusion of the other characters as playable characters was a "no" from the start. This is Sonic's 20th Anniversary and the focus should be on him. While this is an anniversary game, though, the other characters are still important, and they wanted them in the game, so they decided to include them via challenge stages, game cutscenes or gallery pictures/art.

Edit: With regards to the different audiences intended for each version, Iizuka says that the HD version (White Space and Time) was intended for those players who like high-quality games (ex: I think he's talking about graphical quality here), and the game also aimed to "revive the past" for these players. It also features skills and skill customization for those players who want to improve the experience. The 3DS version (Blue Adventure) is made for new and old fans alike, and to be accessible to even children who have no knowledge of Sonic['s past]. It omits the skill customization element, but it's easier to play.

Edit again: He's grateful to Nakamura for allowing the Sonic 1 and 2 music to be used in the game.

When he heard the final arrangements for the new Sky Sanctuary theme, because it was one of the stages he originally designed, he thought it was breathtaking. During the production for Generations HD, the graphics were finished first, so he felt it was a good reproduction. At that time he wasn't even thinking of the music. Sky Sanctuary is a personal favourite of his.

The Sonic Generations OST is a 3-disc set with 90 BGMs from both Sonic Generations HD and 3DS and will be out January 11, 2012.

He talks about how great the Sonic birthday events around the world were, particularly for the fan enthusiasm shown during every event. There were costumes, stage dramas, and people from all over the world at some of the events like the one in London, where some people even came there from Hong Kong.

He talks a little bit about how he came to be at SEGA in 1992. Talks about how Sonic Adventure was a change for the series in terms of playstyle and character design. It was interesting to work on the new hardware such has the Dreamcast. Similarly, when the PS3 and Xbox 360 were about to come out, working with new hardware is sometimes difficult, but they finally got it in 2008 with Sonic Unleashed (huh? I thought they said they had production know-how befo--nevermind). Stuff we know.

A huge topic in 2011 concerned the launch of the PlayStation Vita. But since this year (2011) was the year of Sonic's anniversary, and since they didn't have an accurate timeframe for Vita's release date, they didn't bother with a Vita version of Generations. But will Sonic games exist on Vita? The Vita system is quite attractive, but it's just only been released! It's more of a business decision because they need to determine if there will actually be a user base for Sonic games on that particular platform.

I think it's hard to make fun of things that you're enjoying.

At least, I get the feeling that they're enjoying it. The Sonic 2006 LP was funny because the game was awful.

Asking again:

I want to start reading the archie Sonic comics (picking up the Mega Man ones while I'm at it).
Oh sorry, I didn't see that before.

Definitely. I was thinking of picking it up myself. It has the four issues that started the Sonic Archie comics (the miniseries with #0-#3, but there's some stuff that got retconned but that's ok), and then issues #1-16. I think it's a very good place for newcomers to start. And it's convenient! :)

I haven't read any of the graphic novel stuff but they recently had an arc designed to be an easy jumping-off point for new readers. Keep in mind that the "legacy" graphic novels also probably cover a lot of the crap, too. If you want to read current issues, there seems to be a few good places to start, depending on how much you feel like reading:

Issue #200 is where many of the overarching themes of the last 30 issues begin. A good place to start if you want to know "everything".

Issue #219 is probably a better starting point than #200, because it sums up a few boring (but vaguely important) story arcs and sets up motivations that are still in play in current issues.

If you've ever seen the Saturday morning cartoon series and have played the games, #224 or #225 is probably the officially-sanctioned "jumping off point". You don't quite get the run-up to explain why some of the events in these two issues are important, but you won't be terribly lost as to what's going on.

If you don't want to deal with finding places to buy back-issues, what I did to catch up was read the ArchieSonic Wiki. Some of the text is a little too verbose and doesn't have the best grammar, but there's detailed synopsiseses of all the issues I just described.

By the way, to those who follows archie Sonic comics... Is Sonic Legacy Graphic Novel Vol #1 a great place to start?

The first year or so of the comic doesn't really have much of anything to do with what it became, but I do love it so. It's the only time in the series' history that it was completely and shamelessly focused on good, silly fun, and you can tell the creative team had a blast making it.

After a year of that, they realized that they actually weren't going to get unceremoniously canceled like every other video game comic book and started writing in a plot. Between picking up some terrible new writers and not doing anything resembling quality control, the next ~150 issues are largely crap. Important to current continuity, but crap.

There are a few different decent starting points in Ian Flynn's run on the series (#160 onward) which are covered just above, but the reprints haven't gotten up that high yet. I'm fond of the three two-parters between #213 and 218, in part because they were a breath of fresh air and entirely disconnected from the year-long slog that was the Iron Dominion arc, and in part because they're all about Sonic going places and having adventures.

Congrats to Sonic for making #1 on a Top 10 list by Gametrailers

Too bad it's the wrong kind of list :(

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/top-10-gt-countdown/727456
More like Top 10 Easiest Targets list. Numero uno feels like a troll for hits, but then again, we're a bit biased in this thread, aren't we? I don't truly see how Sonic can top ET, but ok.

The least they could have done was gotten their damn bad Sonic games right:
-Sonic 2006 -- disliked by nearly everyone over the age of thirteen
-Sonic and the Black Knight -- Sonic shouldn't have to attack anyone with a sword, why are the missions so bad, at least the soundtrack's okay
-Poochie the Hedgehog -- Finding a computer room and killing Robotnik has never been this much of a disaster!

Heroes, Secret Rings, and hell, even the Adventure games seem to be love it or hate it. Sonic 4 seems to be a mileage-may-vary sort of affair not just on GAF.

I personally wouldn't lump Sonic Unleashed with the rest of the bad games either. After having played both versions of it, I don't think it's terrible at all. The werehog bits overstay their welcome, sure, but that doesn't mean that they're "wow, I really want to kill myself right now" terrible. I've played a lot of those sorts of games, and Sonic Unleashed doesn't make me feel that way outside of Eggmanland HD.

I felt I had to say my piece here because I found the list as a whole rather irksome but didn't want to talk about it in the designated thread for the video.

They are way too involved for what's actually happening. If they were really playing like that they'd have died 20 times.

On the topic of Sonic LPs, the 20 years of Sonic LP is reaching the end of Sonic Heroes now.
The latest part is great if you want to see Final Fortress slowly make two people dead inside.

God, watching this is weird. The robots and cannons and stuff are identical to Generations! Except way lower poly, and the game looks ten times more horrendous to play. Hmmm. I can't handle that imagery I used to associate with a really bad game is now imagery I associate with a really good game. :lol

Breaking Bad. Sonic 06.

How can you break something that is already broken?

On another note I have been strangely playing Sonic Heroes lately...it's really weird. I must be going nuts.

BREAKING BAD? MORE LIKE... BADLY BROKEN. AM I RIGHT?

...

I put Sonic Heroes in once every couple years. There's a small handful of levels that are fun enough to go through as Team Sonic - usually Seaside Hill, Ocean Palace, Grand Metropolis, and maaaaybe Rail Canyon, Frog Forest, or Hang Castle.

Team Rose can actually be pretty fun, too, if you can tolerate the characters themselves. All of their levels are usually less than half the length as the other teams, so you don't run in to so much copy/paste level design.

Ive been watching videos of the Run Button podcast LPs at random
The Indiana Jones discussion in the Hang Castle video slayed me

"Well you know how in any other Indiana Jones movie there'd be weird religious things? Now its a weird alien thing."
"Thats just stupid"
"How is it stupid? Its the same thing!"
"No its not"
"YES IT IS, ITS ALL SHIT THAT DOESNT EXIST"

Every time I start boot up Heroes now I end up getting mad within 5 minutes and stop playing.

I'm going have to eventually get Sonic Heroes given that it's cheap as hell nowadays.

I don't know if I ever mentioned I've been planning to do a big Sonic marathon. Yes, this includes Sonic Blast, Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 06. I am a big fucking masochist. :(

But fortunately I'll wash off that bitter taste once I reach Sonic Colors and Generations :)

(Also, hurry up Virtual Console. I want Triple Trouble already!)

I'd add Bingo Highway and Egg Fleet to the list even if the last one repeats itself too much. don't like Hang Castle much though.

A friend pushed me to start a Tumblr on the promise I'd post the dumbest comments I get on my Sonic 2006 video. If you guys are interested:

I can't abide by Casino Park or Bingo Highway; those are the worst pinball physics in any Sonic game ever made.

What can I say? I enjoy the bingo parts, but Casino Park can go to hell, you get trapped in those pinball tables, calling them pinball physics is probably insulting to pinball. Last time I played Bingo Highway I somehow shot over the final table from the bingo section and landed in the goal ring section which was fortunate.

Pretty sure most people in this thread would say that, I don't see how that's an agenda.

Joncha is fucking nuts sometimes like how he kept saying certain review sites were biased against sonic or something equally asinine when Generations reviews started pouring in.
