I can see 'big picture' mode being available on the PS4 but not much more than that.

Or Steambox IS PS4

Worth repeating in all these threads, the déjà vu is strong when you compare the attitudes like that. Sony really didn't think the price of the PS3 was bad because they only saw the value of the other stuff and knew how expensive the tech in the box was. But gamers couldn't see any tangible benefit to the CELL say so to the consumer it was simply an overpriced game console that could play blurays (which few ppl had or cared about until Planet Earth).

Thanks for that repost. There is a lot of reason in that post. I'm a bitter cheerful now about our fate.

Wait so what is our course of action if NeoGAF
goes down most of the day?
Is there somewhere we can go?

Honestly, EvilLore probably dipped into his cash reserves to put NeoGAF on a seriously crazy cloud (I haven't looked into this theory). We know bigboss got in trouble for implying NeoGAF couldn't handle the conference (see my avatar, changed it because that guy was so broken about it and didn't mean anything bad, it was stupid, but not nefarious). So it's best not to even speculate. I have a feeling, since search has been available to me ever since the "maintenance" (switchover to a cloud) that the site can handle it. Normally search is turned off when the site has 10k users. If anything takes the site down it'll be the software, not the server.

This. #neogaf should suffice. We'll figure it out in social media.

3. - Kefka (FF VI), The Boss (MGS3), Doctor Nefarious (Ratchet & Clank)
2. - Cole McGrath (inFamous), Jak and Daxter, Jen (Primal)
1. Kingdom Hearts, with Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, LittleBigPlanet and inFamous as runner-ups (in no order).

One day to go. Woot! ^_^

The reality is that for Sony doing what MS did would be an even bigger mistake than $599. $599 was when Sony was attempting to target more than just gamers. Go back and read some of the early quotes about that console. It's very clear that they didn't think that price would be a hurdle because they were no longer simply targeting gamers.

If there's any truth at all about their repeated statement on the PS4 being a console for gamers, then it can't resemble the MS strategy. MS is going with that because much like with Sony and the PS3, they're no longer targeting just the gamer. They're thinking that they can expand the market by making a console that does a lot more than just play games. Sony doesn't have that luxury. Sony doesn't have anything to fall back on if gamers turn their back on the PS4. Not that it can't do more than just play games, but that's not what they're marketing it as. They're marketing it as a console for gamers. It's completely obvious how gamers in general feel about this. It's not something that you can talk your way out of (which is probably why MS cancelled so many interviews at E3), and it's not something that you can get out of by showing some nice games. And that's because doing this screws gamers as a whole. It's not something done to make a platform better for gamers, it's something purely done for money and for publishers. And the gamers are simply the people that suffer as a result.

I agree, but I question whether it is something you can get out of by showing some nice games. There's a percentage of hardcore gamers that will follow the games or stick to their preferred manufacturer. There's a percentage of perrenial games who get the CoDs, BFs, Maddens, etc who won't even know the stakes. For DRM to disappear there needs to be definitive rejection by gamers. They must have expected Sony to encroach on their marketshare by simply not being a year late. Furthermore they must have expected a loss of marketshare among those with no internet connection choosing the competition. Which leads me to believe that they plan on making up for that lost revenue somewhere (raising the cost of Live, getting a cut of used games sales somewhere down the line). Them finding any success means there is a constant advocate for DRM in the console space.

I do not think it will be that bad.
In the past they turn off avatars, and close down the off topic section to free up resources.
You may still get a few issues but a refresh or two but will get it right back up.

Will this be the 1st time that the GAF servers go bonkers in the middle of the night?
Considering how late the Sony conference is.

Nah, there have been late night announcements from Famitsu leaks and various other TGS and other things that go on in other countries.

Very good points, though I doubt that Sony will try anything stupid like that again, especially when they had such a hard time getting the PS brand back on it's feet with the PS3 earlier.

But if they even try to do something like Microsoft did, then most people will reject the PS4 & Sony will be forced to close down their gaming division as a result. They don't even have any backups to offset whatever losses that they make this time around because they already spent up just about every profit that they made from both PS1 & PS2 just to keep PS3 afloat, & most of their other divisions are bleeding red ink as it is, so PS4 can't afford to be another Vita in sales. Otherwise, they're fucked.

So for their sake, they better be for the gamers like they promised that they will be, & not be for the corporations/big named 3rd party publishers.

I think that Sony is mainly focusing on games only for the PS4 because devices that are built for a single purpose has generally done a lot better than multipurpose over expensive devices.

Not to mention that Sony has blu-rays, smart tvs and home media devices that already do what consumers want to do if they want to consume digital media from netflix and the like. If they made the PS4 focus on those other things, they would essentially be competing with themselves and their own products. It seems now they're making a wiser choice of focusing on gaming and letting the people who want the other stuff either pick up a PS4 or pick up other products that Sony already offers for a price they want.

In comparison Microsoft doesn't have a wide portfolio of products they can push to get into the living room except for the Xbox. This is why they designed the XBone to fit everyone's tastes and act as a trojan horse into the living room.

Again, history has repeatedly shown that devices that focus on too many things tend to fail instead of focusing on a few things they're good at.

Here's what I'm thinking. The Steam -> PS4 thing is that if a dev makes a game for PS4 the APIs will already be compatible with PC, so Sony will have a PS4toSteamAPI.dll type thing that allows the game to be instantly ported to PC (if it doesn't use PS4-centric assembly level optimizations obviously; which most indy devs won't use or need for that matter).

This will enable indy developers to instantly port a game that they got on PSN to Steam and the partnership would be even better if Steam agreed to allow any PSN title to go to Steam, and not have to pass Steam's rigorous process of "what is good enough." Basically the PSN label would be enough for Steam to accept a game.

That's interesting. I was actually thinking the opposite... open the PC floodgates to PS4.

PS4 is a damn PC. There are hundreds of PC games console-only players never even got a sniff of, and could likely be run with very high settings. It might be worth a devs time to revisit those titles and get them onto PS4.

Maybe not all or even the majority of games would be viable... but I have to imagine at least some would.

I can see 'big picture' mode being available on the PS4 but not much more than that.

Sorry about that, I mean about the DRM/used games part. I just edited my post about earlier.

Do you know how long its for? Sucks he would miss E3 on gaf.

I'm very hyped. I'm going to be watching this with my fiancee (she's excited too; gosh she's great), a couple of my brothers, and two friends. We will have a stream up with SEVERAL backup links ready to go.

Anybody else going to watch it with other people?

I wasn't aware that casting doubt alone upon GAF's ability to withstand e3 numbers has become ban worthy. Even I've already assumed the worst and for a long time have suggested that we ought to shift to gaf's Facebook page if when this site crashes as an alternative.

Sadly, no.

facebook page?

I can go ahead and do that.
Although I'm not sure if people here want just a sony e3 thread or a general E3 thread.
I know the MS e3 thread guys have their own...

This, no... this I must do alone. It is a solitary thing since no one in my immediate circle really gets/cares about the gaming industry like I do... and honestly probably 90% of my good friends and family don't even know I play videogames!

It's my secret. And so I will draw the curtains, crack a beer and geek out on gamez biz stuff for two days. Then go back to irl on Wed.

Has nothing to do with doubting anything.
Many have made comments about fears of GAF getting pummeled, and the powers that be and the mods really are not vain enough to jump on people for it.
All concerns are and will be met, I am sure and have no doubts.
Evilore and crew have been through E3s, TGS' and anything else that comes through including console launches, betrayalthons, megatons and everything in between.
Believe

A mate and I will start hitting the rums. We're gonna get our bingo cards out during the MS conference.

We thought about a drinking game, but then realised we'd be dead pretty quick if the cues were "Experience" and "Content".

You would literally be dead. haha

Guys, I'm actually talking to someone who is trying to justify DRM on Xbone/PS4 and his reasoning is that you don't the data on the disc so MS can do whatever they want with it and lock it down. I'm at a loss for words right now. I'm scared that people are right when they say it won't matter because the public won't care in the long run.

There will be a official thread for the Sony E3 conference as well :)

Ultros said it will be up on Monday iirc

Unless they price it cheap (I'm thinking sub-300) public will not be the market they need to convince at the beginning. It will be the core gamer crowd

There really is a defense force for everything.

The reality of the situation is simply not going to set in for some people until the console launches.

That being said, I know a decent amount of people who have been turned off by the DRM stuff and some of them are hardcore Xbox fans coming to grips with life without Halo.

I'm sort of new here, but can any one explain why so many xbox fans believe every single game is exclusive to XBone? It makes no sense, or is it a meme?

Nothing wrong with that. Up until a couple of years ago I ALWAYS watched them by myself.

If the downclock rumors are true... remind them that the PS4 might be as much as 100% more powerful, in addition to being the cheaper system. Will probably even launch first. Oh yeah, online is free, and if you do pay for the subscription service, the value of PS+ has been pretty remarkable. Also... now the real Halo guys are multiplat.

See... those are good bullet points. Like, actual value that is good for the customer. Unlike all the DRM bullshit that is just restrictions and value subtracted and only good for publishers.

Lol... $299. It's impossible. Then again, if they ever did that, game over. Stick a fork in it. Shot heard round the world. War ends before it starts.

I remember back in December 2011, my mate and I were at our work Social Club Christmas party. Free drinks all round. We decided to come back here at watch the VGA's afterwards. So we stockpiled free cans of alcohol, brought it home, and had a good old time cracking jokes about Doritio's Pope and the ridiculous nature of the show in general. Then we were floored by that last of us trailer That was the first time I watched one of these kinds of events with a friend, we had a gold old time.
