Sony FY22Q4 Earnings Report - 6.3m PS5 sold, 61% YoY growth (~340 HW growth)

Xbox is a one legged man in an ass kicking contest, no matter what they do Playstation Raise there game
It’s actually baffling to me how far behind they are.

They did really well at the start of the Xbox 360 gen and those of us who were in our late teens then have really fond memories of that console and are now the target market for the high end consoles.

They’ve got the most robust sub offering.
They’ve got the best cloud network.
They’ve got a lot of great studios and IP.
Their console is broadly comparable to the PS5 so shouldn’t have too much difficulty in manufacturing it.
They’ve got plenty of money to secure timed exclusives and content.

Over time they should have developed to be in a much stronger position than this.

We are now in a bizarre position where Sony recovered from the PS3, shored up their single player offerings and are now expanding out into areas that in most people’s minds are Microsoft’s wheelhouse (PC gaming, subs, GAAS).

It really is just poor management from top to bottom.

Absolutely gigantic quarter, PS5 made up 3.9 million on PS4 and only trails by 1.8 million launched aligned. Sony forecast a massive 25 million for the current FY which is 5 million more than PS4's FY 2016/17 so they expect PS5 to be around 3 million above PS4 by this time next year.

PS5 had the best 2nd full fiscal year of any Playstation console and if they can hit their target in FY3 it will be another record for a Playstation console and will only be behind DS which shipped 30.31 million in FY3.

* Q4 remaining, forecast to ship 18 million
Hold on a sec.. the PS5 actually beat the Switch's FY2! And their forecast to beat Switch's FY3?

Well, we are heading towards a global recession. So a more cautious approach and conservative expectations is simply normal.

Still, these numbers are simply fantastic for Sony. I don't see why anybody would be worried about its performance worldwide.

Is it? There has been pent up demand for over 2 years and supply has caught up. It seems like this is an artifact of that more than anything.
PS2, the only other 6M Q1 club console, even with its absolute domination needed the same kind of 'supply-pent-up demand' (It had one of the worst holiday quarters preceding it) to reach its own record, and it did so on the back of a sub 199$ price and a redesign to boot.
In context that's a pretty spectacular thing to do for a console in 23.

- Full game software down ~4% YoY as was the % of it being first party
- Forecast of 7% revenue growth and 8% OI (will get more info later)
- PS Plus users flat, MAU up ~2% :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Complete stagnation just PS4 owners upgrading to PS5s so they can continue playing their Free 2 play games like Fornite, Warzone etc.

Yes and yes, Switch shipped 21.03 million in FY3 so with Sony's forecast they expect to ship 25 million in this current FY. The PS5 should also beat PS2's 22.52 million yearly Playstation record which has stood since 2003 and if PS5 performs above expectations it has a chance of beating the Wii's 25.95 million "traditional home console" record for a fiscal year, PS5 only has to be 1 million above the forecast. It will be difficult but not impossible.

By the way, EOY 2022 figures were like:
  • PS5 = 32 million
  • Xbox Series = 18.5 million
End of Q1 2023 would be:
  • PS5 = 38.5 million
  • Xbox Series = ~20.5 million (keeping previous pacing trends the same)
So the worldwide ratio is already almost 2:1 now. 1.9x, to be precise.
Console sales matter all of a sudden to some…

I’m still predicting a 2:1 margin or higher by the end of this gen.
Well looks like it’s already there lol. How the tables have turned within a year, fascinating.

Pretty sure the Switch holds that record with 28M units in a fiscal year, but the 25M forecast here is Sony’s public forecast. Which means it can be revised upwards later this year.

Tom Henderson reported that their internal target was 30M, which would top the Switch to become the new all-time record if they’re able to achieve that.

The record for highest HW sales in a fiscal year is currently held by the Nintendo DS with 31.18M units.

The amazing news, is with this amount of units shipped in. They will be well ahead of units for availability, they are pretty much in stock now and this will put them in amazing stead for the next quarter. Now they can just keep a steady stock flowing in and availability will be completely fixed.

GG Sony.

I barely touch my PS5, but you cant deny they have a winning strategy focusing on high quality single player content that is exclusive to the console.

Not even one mention of PSVR2?
I guess it is selling gangbusters...

3:1 feels too high.
It does, but I think Sony will get there, at least in the ballpark ( > 2.75:1)

Xbox One sold ~50 million. XBS is pacing behind Xbox One and might do ~45 million.

On the other hand, PS5 just outsold PS4 (same FY, launch aligned) by 1.5 million units. Next year, they are forecasting 25 million; the best PS4 ever did was 20 million.

All signs point to PS5 outselling PS4. If it does around ~130 million (instead of ~120 million), it would have outsold XBS nearly 3:1.

Those are some good numbers and it finally feels like the current-gen has picked up some steam. Now, bring out all the games! Xbox as well, I need more of your games for my PC, that's why I pay Gamepass.

But this time will be different! Claimed the expert analyst.

You know, they were actually correct in a way. Xbox series S will sell less than the Xbox One, which was a disaster for MS.

But the competition will be much tougher this time ;)

Switch is a hybrid, for a traditional home console that can only be played on a television screen the Wii has the record.

Home console record fiscal year: 25.95 million Wii 2008/09
Hybrid console record fiscal year: 28.82 million Switch 2020/21
Handheld console record fiscal year: 31.18 million DS 2008/09

You can ignore me but you can't ignore Sony's report.

Sony sold at a loss (digital version) or break even ($499 version) a few million of PS5s, yay!

Not really their user-base is not growing, software is down and revenue is up a tiny amount barely outperforming the Xbox brand who had a 30% hardware decline and a year with no AAA first party releases.
