SCEA Licenses GestureTek Patent for EyeToy Development

GestureTek, the patent creator and holder for their Video Gesture Control technology, announced that it has granted Sony Computer Entertainment America a license to use the technology in EyeToy game development. The EyeToy, a USB camera peripheral for the PS2 developed by Richard Marks in 2003, has been used primarily for games controlled by moving your body, but GestureTek's engine promise finer control and more possibilities for the peripheral.

"With millions of EyeToy units sold worldwide, it is clear that people want to control the characters and action in a videogame without a joystick," said GestureTek CEO Bill Leckonby, "and want to be a part of the action by being a significant living, breathing character in the game. We're excited at the prospect of GestureTek technology expanding the level of human action in the videogame medium."

Previously, GestureTek's Video Gesture Control technology -- 15 years in the making -- has been on display in museums and trade shows, and has only now begun to branch out into consumer applications. In addition to the EyeToy licensing deal, GestureTek has signed on with cell phone game developers and Playskool/Hasbro's recently announced ION (E.G.S.) system.

I'am willing to bet its more than just eyetoy developoment. I could see this tech working its way into the PS3's design to compliment a certain Sony invention for the PS3.

Yes, there's still a lot of potential in EyeToy, I'd love to see one build into PS3.
BTW, I was impressed because of how finer the EyeToy cam works with EyeToy: Play 2. It notices smallest and finest moves so damn clear you wouldn't believe it's the same cam as with Play 1.

Actually, the eyetoy's motion-sensing technology(not the camera itself) IS being built into the console. This patent filing shows it as being so:

Sony patent

I'am quite suprised nobody came across this patented invention by Sony as yet(suprise, suprise),but the invention is described as being built into the console.

Re-read what you just said and think about what the "EyeToy's motion-sensing technonolgy" might be: you will see the problem with this sentence ;).

Not only that, but that patent (the one you linked to, at least) is for a "handheld computer interactive device", not something that's built into the console.

Regarding Eyetoy itself, Marks did what sounded like a great presentation at DICE recently which showed off the potential of motion-processing tech within the next several years. I just wish we were seeing more of the intermediate steps towards those goals in game form along the way...somebody give me Police 911 already!!!!
