Sony might have blown their dominance in the FGC

Throughout the last generation Sony was the preferred platform for fighting game tourneys. If the design in the reveal is final, which it probably is, then there is a very low chance that will continue. Why? There is only one USB port and one USB-C port on the front of the console. Without two identical ports fight sticks can't have a unified standard. All the set ups will need at least one adapter, and that could lead to compatibility issues. If the Series X has 2 of the same port, whether it be USB or USB-C, I see it easily becoming the new standard.

Nothing a $10 USB hub won't fix, if there really are no rear USB ports. Not like it's gonna matter anyway if franchises like GG and SF stay Sony exclusives next gen.

This isn't my lane, but I can see why that is a concern. There's truthfully no excuse to have any less than two USB or USB-C ports in these devices. Almost every rechargeable device in the last 5 years (at the very least) has utilized this very port.

Meh, seems like that's easily fixed with either a usb port in the back or a usb hub as others note.

Also, the FGC is a pretty tiny chunk of the market for a company that sold over 100 million consoles, I doubt they care that much if if something else is used at tourneys. The Twitch streams of events usually don't have the consoles visible anyway as it's focused on the screen and the some shots of the players and their fight sticks before and after matches.

The "Sony is doomed" crowd is working hard these days. Like bugs.

That's a USB C port, I'm pretty sure it's throughput is high enough to support two controllers, power and data. Trust me, they'll figure it out. If NOT then by golly miss molly, Series X is the game tourny CHAMPION.

Not concern trolling, just don't want the series x to be the dominant platform in my genre of choice. It felt good to have a thriving online scene for most games, and I don't want to lose that because Sony put 1 less port on the front of the box.

I was actually thinking about this when I see the front of the console. How can the PS5 be the standard for fighting games if sony makes things difficult for them. XSX has 3x USB-A ports: Two in the back, one in the front confirmed. It already looks to be more useful in that regard.

By being the console that actually has the games. As I said, if Street Fighter remains a Sony exclusive on consoles, people won't have a choice. The game is too huge to be ditched by tournament organizers, and if the biggest game at your event is gonna be using PS5, then you might as well use that for all the other games with PS5 releases as well.

The only odd thing is how they mixed the fronts, one USB-C and one USB-A, why not two USB-C on the front and put two USB-A on the back? Especially since both Sony and Microsoft went big on how external drives can be used with these consoles.

Yea, I dunno about all that. Xbox's D-pad makes fighting games all but unplayable and the Series X dpad is like the elite 2. Not my first choice honestly.

Interesting question I've been to a bunch of fgc tournys and your question is valid. If there isn't 2 same port usbs that will be a problem honestly thats the 1st hurtle the second is how will the controllers work this time around once you connect a controller to the ps4 the system registers that controller. So between every match you have to go into the system settings to delete the controllers profile "every ps4 controller has one" if ps5 still has that feature it will be a problem. We don't even know if the ps5 works with ps4 arcade sticks I know a lot of grand turismo player are asking about wheel compatibility as well.

If ps5 is toruny viable they will just run games on a mix of Xbox sx,pc and arcade cabnets/boards

The Series X also has Dynamic Latency Input, which is a match made in heaven for fighting games where literal frames matter and decide matches so any reduction in latency is a huge plus.

Even if it only had a USB 1.0 port on the back, people will get a splitter/adapter and play the same as they did before. I don't remember the Smash community dying when the Wii U or Switch didn't have a Gamecube controller port.

Only an absolute nerd would know something like this. Bless your heart 😂

"stay". When have Guilty Gear and Street Fighter ever been Sony exclusives?
Sure, PC and arcade versions exist. This thread is about fighting game tournaments, though, and both platforms are utterly impractical for that setting.

EVO isn't going to be setting up hundreds of arcade cabinets for Street Fighter or Guilty Gear, and even if they could somehow financially and logistically afford to, that would exclude anyone not using a stick from participating.

PC is a nightmare to set up and configure with for similar reasons. Think dealing with adapters for legacy controllers is a pain in the ass on consoles? How bad do you think it would be on PC, where most of them wouldn't work without custom drivers?

I wonder why they bothered to do that. I was wondering at the reveal? I would have thought the USB C would be for additional hard drives so why not just put it in the back of the system. If it's not for storage then why not have two standard USB in the front or just settle on the USB C standard?

PS will continue dominating. PS5 will very likely have more ports in the back. There are even adaptors or hubs if it isn't the case.

Arcade versions aren't available over the world, are very expensive and some games are PS exclusives.

PC aren't used in tournaments because the performance isn't always the same than in a console so it would be different for each set up, and on top of that PCs are more expensive than consoles. And in countries like Japan they almost don't know what a Xbox is.

I can't believe these stupid panic threads. After Apple removed the headphone jack, iTunes went out of business because there was no way to listen to music anymore.

There is something called USB hub. Even smash players use GameCube controller hubs for their Nintendo switches.

Arcade sticks may have USBC or normal USB cable. Arcade versions aren't available over the world.
That was my point. They're impractical.

Performance isn't really an issue, as long as the hardware can hit a stable 60 FPS. Even if some setups at a tournament were significantly more powerful than others, pretty much all games come with frame limiting options which would easily take care of that problem. But realistically speaking, that won't happen anyway. If tournament organizers were to use PCs, they would just be leasing ones with identical specs, so there would be no performance difference to begin with. The cost for leasing a bunch of PCs versus leasing a bunch of consoles is probably higher, but the difference probably isn't huge enough to be a real problem.

In terms of sheer impracticality, both cost and performance pale in comparison to the time and effort it would take to properly set up and configure dozens or hundreds of PCs for a fighting game tournament. I'm speaking from experience here. A SF4 tournament I was involved in tried switching from Xbox to PC for a single event and it turned into total disaster almost entirely due to driver and controller compatibility issues.

Brand new levels of reaching here...
Xbox Discord needs to try harder if this is all they can come up with.
Overlooking the USB ports in the back is just lazy.
Get your shit together people! Sinking Sony won't be easy, you need every single brain cell focused on this task!

Fair enough.
