They make too much money on PC sales to leave it out in the cold at this point and not enough people are gonna actually just buy a PlayStation for 1st party games, that ship has sailed. That isn't going back in the bottle.

Casuals have always bought PlayStations for third party games over first.

The poll doesn't reflect the current reality.

About 18 months ago it would have made sense to talk about exclusivity. At that time Xbox was still limping along and we didn't know they'd go full third party this quickly. Sony making exclusivity a clear cut priority back then would have (and perhaps did) killed Xbox hardware.

But now, Xbox hardware is already dead both in terms of sales and strategy going forward for MS.

Xbox collapsed so quickly that as thing stand right now, exclusives don't make sense.

There is a market of console players spread across PS and Xbox which doesn't seem to be growing, and Sony need to keep as many of those people in the console ecosystem as they can.

They may as well drop their stuff to the Xbox consoles for the same reason they're putting stuff on PC - it generates fans, and those fans may jump to PS in future.

I imagine whatever MS told Sony in order to get Helldivers onto Xbox was a tip off - Xbox isn't competition or a threat to Sony in their space anymore.

So, simple answer is no - as of today and probably the rest of this gen, Sony may as well put stuff on Xbox consoles.

PS6 is when they can revisit the situation and decide whether to revert to a pure exclusive strategy again to try and drag players onto PS. Bear in mind there won't be an Xbox console - there may be PCs with an Xbox button but that's a different matter.

I think it'll probably be a good idea for Sony to offer a kind of play anywhere approach to their titles on Xbox consoles too - just let people buy on Xbox today and come PS6 let them transfer those titles across so they have a library there already.

Finally, I think Sony would be wise to avoid putting their stuff on GP for now anyway.

But sure, port the old stuff to current consoles, let people buy those titles, and for PS6, let them bring those purchases across. Sony can potentially gain a decent chunk of the Xbox users, the ones they don't get will disappear to PC land.

Nintendo is regarded as the exception because they have a major brand power and attach ratio even during mid or bad times, Mario 64 is the best selling game of the 32-bit generation, their WiiU games sold on par with most of the Sony and Microsoft great selling exclusives. Most of the Nintendo's consoles best selling games are from them, they have like a third or more of the overall software sales revenue yearly, it was even a bit controversial during the Gamecube-WiiU days where some developers complained that Nintendo games were taking all the air of the third parties on their consoles.

Contrast this with Sony and Microsoft, both of them known for having a much more pro-third party enviroment from the get go, the bulk of their popularity is owed to third party, that also includes most of their exclusives, the vast majority of their profits come from third party games than their own. Even Nintendo learned the hard way with WiiU and 3DS days started to generate yearly losses, which in turn made changes during the Switch development to make the company much more welcoming to third party developers.

And finally, it's not "short term", it's about that their new competitor is the PC, which most people have it and doesn't see why they should spend +400 bucks on a videogame to play only one or two games that would interest them. Not sure if people here remember the "PC Gaming is Dead" joke that was common the mid 00s to very early 10s, because while the platform had missed a bunch of multiplatform games during the 90s, it became even worse in the 128-bit and HD generations as many developers complained about piracy and decided to make their games to consoles only, until Steam rose big time and they returned to the platform.

What third party's are not supporting the Sony consoles though and how have they been compromised if they've had the most successful gen? Also with the switch 2 selling high first of all a lot of those sales are FOMO and having a lot of supply at launch we still don't know how it will do in the long run.
The "Xbox is dead" meme didn't become a thing overnight. The failure to invest in first-party studios and new IPs during the second half of the 360 Gen and the first half of the Xbox One gen set everything else in motion. Everything that followed was a direct consequence of that mistake.

it takes time and consistent inaction/incompetence to fuck things up as bad as Xbox.

But let's not forget that Sony went from PS2 to PS3. So, Play Station can fuck things up in the future, in fact: I will argue than they have been fucking things up regarding their First Party output; their AAA formula is getting old and stale.

the most attractive aspect of PC gaming is ironically how cheap videogames can be, options galore and even free MP and games (EGS) without any subscription. if PS6 price is in the ballpark of a 60/60TI series of GPU and some "Sony console gamer" is pushed to PC... there is not going back or at least Sony will encourage a split userbase.

I say no but didn't vote.

It's not because Sony is stupid. Sony is in the business to make money and they make more money putting these games on multiple platforms. This will be the last gen with a dedicated box.

PlayStation has never had an 1st party exclusive that would bring in the numbers of Mario Kart the only games bringing in those type of numbers is Fortnite, GTA , Minecraft & Roblox.

Stop pretending like PlayStation Exclusives was a big thing before because we have the data & PlayStation 1st party games have been bigger in the last 2 generations than they have ever been.

The only real danger Sony is in is that they don't control any of the super popular GaaS. If Epic decided to pull Fortnite off PS for whatever reason it would cost them big. Same with any of these other games. There is nothing to stop any of them from deciding they would rather collect 100% of that revenue instead of paying a middle man. It's why they're so desperate to make a GaaS hit.

Even though they don't control it no gaas is skipping PlayStation sure you may have some that may release first on PC but skipping it no way. Only one getting skipped for some of these would be Nintendo.

I have a suspicion that Arrowhead might have been the main driver of that.

That was my initial thought - arrowhead drove it - but apparently not according to the comments made a couple of weeks back.

The rumor now is MS approached Sony to ask for it - I think that was a S SneakersSO report.

But that wouldn't have just happened a few weeks back - they probably made that decision at least 6 months ago and maybe earlier to get the port ready.

If that is an accurate version of events, I wonder what MS told Sony that made them port HD2, and I assume whatever it was puts other ports on the table.

Most of the games on this list sell better on PS consoles with the exceptions of marvel rivals, apex legends and possibly rainbow six siege, roblox and maybe maybe fortnite.

Why would the companies pull out their games from PS systems?

Its not a fair comparison imo because handhelds have always sold better and also theres no shortage of semiconductors like there was at time of PS5 release.
I really wonder why people do not understand this. Families will often share a home console but are far more likely to buy individual handhelds for people who want to play.

The premise of this thread is flawed. The assumption that exclusives is what drives Switch sales numbers begs the question of what happened to the Gamecube and Wii U?

Do you think porting games isn't dumb?

Or do you think it's not Sony simply prioritizing short term profits?

What about it bothers you? The most diehard Sony fans on this board have been extremely critical of Sony on this

I had no idea this had a defense force. Sony is a huge corp. it doesn't need people defending its dumb practices. Unless you think this is actually a good practice long term for Sony?

The most diehard Sony fans on this board tend to be manchildren who throw tantrums at having to share their toys with other people. Their criticism needn't be taken seriously.

Nintendo relies entirely on their first party output. It's very much a live by the sword, die by the sword strategy. Even if their system gets popular third party games, they are usually late or run terribly (or both). Basically you buy a Nintendo console to play Nintendo's games and not much else, and there is no indication yet that this will be different for Switch 2. So Nintendo porting their games elsewhere, even their lower selling niche titles, would be an instant death sentence for their console business.

Sony has never been completely reliant on their firsty party, which has primarily served as a differentiator to draw people to their platform instead of PC or Xbox, both of which offered most of the same third party games and at similar fidelity. PS consoles have always been a general purpose gaming device. The box you put under your TV that can kind of do it all, and maybe some other nifty things like DVD and blu ray.

Xbox may be out of the equation at this point, but Sony still has to be careful of Switch 2 and Steam, but much more so the latter. Porting their games to PC might seem like "free money" right now, but it can absolutely come back to bite them if Steam and Steam OS consoles continue gaining traction.

I don't know about Xbox, but as far as PC, they can absolutely release their games on PC and carry on with Playstation fine.

IDK if you know this, but way back on PS1 they had Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider exclusive, however both were also released on PC at the time..

steam consoles are becoming a thing, I agree with others that porting all your shit to PC is dangerous. why grab a ps6 when I can get a steam console and play all those games plus the ridiculous library steam offers?

steam consoles weren't a thing back when ps1 was around

In the long run porting Sony exclusives even to PC will hurt PS console sales and alienate the PS fanbase , that getting ps5, and in the future Ps6, might become pointless. That is why Nintendo is always successful and high quality games due to Nintendo franchise exclusives.

handhelds have always sold better

I keep seeing people say this, but I don't think there's any real evidence for it, outside of Japan.

If you look at any list of the best selling gaming systems, it's going to be split pretty evenly between handhelds and home consoles.

Six of the top ten best selling systems ever are home consoles, three are handhelds, and one is a hybrid system. Four of the seven systems to sell more than 100 million total units are home consoles. Nine of the fifteen systems to sell over 50 million units are home consoles.

If anything, home consoles have a small edge in sales, but it's probably fairer to say that consoles and handhelds have roughly the same sales potential.

Given Nintendo's success, do you think Sony might take note and focus on exclusives again?

Lol! Given Sony is the market leader and more successful than Nintendo, if something Nintendo is the one who should need take note from Sony, and not the opposite.

And what exclusives? lol, PS has way more exclusives, more varied -and looking at the wallet voting, better too- than Switch (specially Switch 2). And if we also consider games that despite not being exclusive are in a platform and not in the other, Sony has way more and way better ones. Something that isn't new, Sony had a better catalog every single generation since since the PS1.

This is the main reason of why PS won the consoles war, remaining as the only home console standing after defeating every single other competitor.

Being dead in the home consoles market, Nintendo did a good job in the portables side with Switch having as competitors only stuff like Ambernic and Soulja Boy. Won't be the same in a few years once the PC handhelds mature, specially once Sony goes back to the portable market having learnt from previous mistakes.

No PS5 exclusive is exactly why I don't feel the need to buy the console even if its timed exclusive.
Timed exclusives, console exclusives and timed console exclusives are different types of exclusives.

To say PS5 doesn't have exclusives is being a gaming flatearther. Specially when last year the game that won more GOTY awards was a PS5 exclusive, and when Sony broke sales records with exclusives they published in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Yes, very interesting indeed. Maybe MS went to Sony and basically told them that they're going to release all their games on PS from now on. HD2 may be a gesture of good faith as well as an experiment to see how well it would see on Xbox.

If their exclusives were good enough, they would have done it already.

Sony is kinda like the country that benefits most from free trade. They don't really produce shit, but as long as they're everyone else's #1 importer, then they have great success.

Nintendo is the protectionist counterpart, and they pump out constant bangers so they don't need anyone else.

Out of the 50 or so best selling video games systems listed on wikipedia only 11 (13 if you count switch and switch 2) are handhelds.

Outside of the top 20 of the best-selling systems, only the Vita and the Game Gear are out of the top 20 (naming somehow known systems).

A balanced handheld system (games, hardware, brand power etc.) usually has higher potential to sell more than a dedicated home console.

So, he's not wrong.

Sony has to find a way to lower gaming dev cost, that's the main reason they tried to jump on the live service trend.

Nintendo is different because they don't chase high end tech with their console and games anymore so their dev cost are much lower plus they have major ip like Mario, Donkey Kong, that will sell no matter what.

I think the PS6 will be a lot better because I would think they leaned a lot from the failures from this gen.

Why would they change strategy? It's not like exclusives is a wild new concept to them, nor is Nintendo's strategy.

I think it sucks and they're losing me as a longtime fan and customer, but they're doing amazingly well now unfortunately.

Its unbelievable to me how people still underestimate the value of exclusives specially first party outside of Nintendo ... imagine if Nintendo had a powerful console that could output the same quality third party as the ps5 ....imagine if Xbox had maintained their first party strength and exclusives deals from the 360 until now...

Looking now at the ps5 sales and saying "thats just because of FIFA" is ridiculously simple minded.

When I say exclusives, I mean only available on that console and no other, not even PC port, like Nintendo.

Also, even if PS5 does have exclusives just not enough of it. I don't make my decision based on just a couple of exclusives and also I don't give a shit about GOTY.

Sony had a few fumbles this gen but is still incredibly successful. Not sure why people can't be content with Nintendo's success, but hey, weird people gonna weird.

Oh shit, an online poll on a random fucking site. I stand corrected. Sony fucking doomed. Guess there's no way forward but to go third party.

calm down bro I didn't even make that thread

Most people don't think this was a successful gen despite Sony making bank on GaaS. close to 70%.

No reason to lose your shit over that

Still got my shit.

Like I said, they made some fumbles this gen along with other world events that impacted things. I'm not going to give much thought to the feels of people who are butthurt about minor shit.

No. I don't think there's enough tangible data to support it. It's a hard sell to the finance guys in meetings. "Keeping Horizon exclusive sells PS5s!" "OK how many?" "Umm well you see..."

Plus Xbox is gone and I don't think Sony and Nintendo really compete for the same market. There's really not a reason to keep things off Steam. I don't think there will be a traditional PS7 at all. It'll be a streaming box at best, but honestly by that time in the tech tree the box might not even be needed. Just a TV app. I'm sure they'll have it for people with older TVs and whatnot, but I have little doubt that is where the future of new release AAA gaming. Honestly there are some good things for gamers in there. In terms of graphics at least and potentially cost.
Nintendo and Sony obviously compete for the same market. They both make videogame consoles, and they both make their own software, and have third-party devs make games for said hardware. It is the exact same space, with slightly different emphases.

The one thing that is different, is that if Nintendo, amd their hardware start getting the same exact games(third-party)day and date as Sony, it will damage Sony. The same cannot be said about Nintendo. Nintendo is extremely self sufficient in terms of games. Their exclusives are in a completely different realm.

This is not a situation where the switch 2 cannot possibly have the same games. It absolutely can. That is the danger zone Sony is in. I use myself as a singular piece of evidence. I have always had Nintendo+Another system. It was xbox for the longest time. I switched to Sony. If the games I played on those consoles started hitting the switch 2, and they play the same, I am going to stop buying said games on the PS5. I HUGE portion of this is coupled to the online aspect. When the next COD hits, im going to see if its feature same. If it is, for the first time, ill play on a Nintendo system.

Sony has to have a reason for gamers to buy their hardware. If its not exclusive titles, made by Sony, then its third-party games. If those games are also available on switch 2, and those games start selling well, well, Sony is in trouble, because things can change on a dime.

If anything. The success of releasing their games on PC will shorten the wait time between console and PC releases down to 6 months. We saw Spiderman 2 and GoW Ragnarok released i think i year after console. I still think single player games will never release day 1 with console. But exclusivity is done. Which is good. Saves me from buying the next PS console.

I don't think so.
Trying to take a similar approach as Nintendo seems foolish because they'll never have any franchise as relevant as the main Nintendo ones. Nintendo positioned their brands early and has done a good job keeping them relevant for 30+ years.
Saying the Switch is popular simply because it has exclusives games seems reductive, yes it having exclusives is important, but the more important fact is that those exclusives are Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Smash, etc.

I don't think Ps5s will start flying off the shelves if they announce Intergalatic and Ghost of Yotei will not come to PC.

So, he's not wrong.

I'm not sure this is a fair standard, since, outside Nintendo, most companies bailed on the handheld market after a single failure, whereas that's not true of the console market.

Look at the Lynx, Nomad, N-Gage, and Wonder Swan.

The potential downside of the handheld market is so low that the vast majority of hardware manufacturers have decided that it's not worth the gamble.

As long as their consoles keep selling crazy numbers they won't care. They're on-track to end in the top 5 overall, and become the 2nd best selling PlayStation console ever.

If they want to sell the PS6, they will have to.
What alternatives are there to Playstation?

Nintendo and PC have very different demographics overall, so the vast majority of PS and Xbox userbase won't move over to those platforms.

Xbox, as we know it, is dead.

So in that sense, Sony has bit of wiggle room in regards to exclusivity (hence Helldivers 2 on Xbox).

But Sony would be smart to move more towards exclusivity again and iirc Hulst recently stated that they will be doing so.
