Out of the big 3… With a new Gen probably coming by 2028. What company do you think is going to be in a better position in terms of dominance and influence in the video game industry? You can also add the order of the positions in a comment.

It will be between Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft will be a full blown 3rd party publisher and Gamepass will be dead.

What I hope happens is that SteamOS takes off and we can finally ditch Windows.

That's the old Microsoft logo

Out of those 3, Nintendo because they keep their software console exclusive.

But if you had included Valve in the options I would have voted for them.

I would like to see data on how many young kids today have not even touched a Nintendo game.
My kids played Nintendo games, but they don't have the same cult following to keep playing them.

Microsoft owns like half the damn gaming software industry.

Yeah Xbox might be dead but they can still dominate as a 3rd party dev/publisher.

Basing things on where we are in 2025 and the latest rumors for next gen:

- Nintendo will probably be in the best position in 2028 just going by the fact that Switch 2 is set be the biggest console launch in history based on preorder numbers. 2028 would be 3 Years into the Switch 2 life and no doubt by that point they will have at least a few classics. Hardware wise, they will probably have a Switch 2 lite out by then, maybe an OLED model as well. Unless Nintendo royally fucks up between now and then, I think they will almost certainly be in a great spot in 2028. That being said, I do think 2028 will be the peak for Nintendo for this generation. After that, I can see them beginning to decline as more of the consumer interest moves to the true next generation systems and other handhelds... At least until the next Nintendo system comes up.

- Sony will probably be runner up. The PS5 has done very well despite the fact that this generation has been so lackluster. They can ride the success of the PS5 into the PS6 which should be out by 2028. The major challenge for them will be getting all of their 1st parties in order to deliver games that people actually want. This generation has been a blood bath for far too many studios due to way too many bad choices. The addition of a new handheld will also give them a boost as long as it doesn't require much dedicated development time.

- I suspect Microsoft will get their next-gen system out first which may or may not help them... If they can show a significant boost over the PS5 Pro, maybe that will generate enough interest to give them a head start. They have lost a lot of mind share market during this generation. I can see them leaning more into making Xbox a service rather than a home console. When it comes to the hardware side, if they go the Steam route and work with several OEMs, that could also give them a unique advantage since new Xbox consoles with more power (or better value) could come at any time rather than waiting for Microsoft to release a "Pro" system or jump into the next generation.

I think the bigger question is where will the gaming industry as a whole be in 2028? Much of the studio closures and hardships that hit the gaming industry so hard these past few years has come down to developers no longer making games that appeal to the very gamers who got them where they are today! Can these companies finally start delivering what the fans want? Can we have a new generation that actually has new ideas or will AAA games become what big Hollywood is today - nothing more than sequels, remakes and generic ideas? Perhaps AA games will be the new "thing". In fact we have already seen games like Expedition 33 and Wukong spark much more excitement in gamers than the majority of larger budget AAA releases this generation.

Agree, in terms of software they probably are going to be the dominance force, but overall i think that Nintendo is going to be a step above.

The only space where there those three companies exist in direct competition is consoles. So you can pretty much eliminate Microsoft from consideration.

My prediction:

Sony will dominate the living room space
Nintendo will dominate the portable console space
MS will be the biggest publisher

So they will all be better positioned at something diferent.

MS - will be the biggest publisher in games, if they're not already. I think gamepass will join Zune and Mixer by then.

Nintendo - tremendous first party. Own the Japanese market outright. First in profit.

Sony - first in revenue. hopefully they stop making terrible gaas games by 2028. Will make a ton of money being the only "traditional console" going forward and collecting 30% of all microtransactions on the popular console gaas.

I voted for Nintendo because they have the most popular IP and are the only console with exclusives

PS6 is gonna underperform if playstation try to cruise the remainder of this gen.

Nintendo look kitted out for the future

Xbox... Well

Microsoft will be generating the most revenue so it depends on what you mean by best position. Console sales definitely not, but I think they will be the biggest player in the business.

All of them will be in a good position:
- Sony: home consoles
- Nintendo: handhelds consoles
- Xbox: third-party / maybe Xbox branded PCs
- Steam: PC / niche PC handhelds

Microsoft is basically imbatible -they have infinite money and three giant publishers at once- and Nintendo fans are basically a cult. Sony is fucked up; they just blew up the entire PS5 generation with their GAAS iniciative, wasting the PS4 momentum.

Eh....that's a bit hyperbolic. Microsoft may have massively deep pockets, but that doesn't mean Xbox does. People have been making that mistake for quite some time. Phil Spencer himself has said that he has to run a profitable business from within Microsoft. I mean....Xbox just jacked up their prices. If that doesn't tell you they don't have "infinite money" then not sure what will. As far as publishers, Activision Blizzard pretty much accounts for all of Xbox's growth. But everything combined they are stil behind Tencent and Sony in revenue last time I checked.

I think MS has something up their sleeve, and I'm not just BS'ing. Game Pass was rightly copied by Sony, their boxes are cool, the games coming out are good so far. Avowed was sweet to play for the first time (even though they made you be a godlike) and I'll return to it. Feel the same about their other high profile games. Also, they had the sagacity to fix their mobile app and push rewards tracking. It currently works better at motivating me to be involved in the ecosystem than ps stars and the ps mobile app. I think cloud gaming will somehow synergize or cooperate with, or be connected in some even more critical way to future xbox consoles. Their wallet right now is getting drip fed, but the supply drops are scheduled, I believe. It just takes one hit.

I think once Valve and/or Microsoft start selling PC-boxes that can be had at a reasonable price and are hopefully approaching console level convenience, the gaming community will slowly start to shift that way. And Microsoft are the only ones who are properly preparing for such a future. Plus they are a publishing powerhouse now.

Nintendo are both in a good and bad position. They are currently doing very well, but they also have the most fickle audience where many could simply decide not to buy any new console at all if it doesn't appeal to them enough.
