Sony rethinks PSP demand

So Sony originally planned to make 18M PSPs, huh? Didn't read the full thread, but looks like my rants months ago weren't so crazy afterall. ;) I said 10M easy this year. Still sticking to that. But I also figured they could have anywhere from 15-20M units by the end of the fiscal year. Sounds like they were originally in the ballpark, but dropped those numbers. The PSP is simply overpriced, and I don't think there's the demand even for the 12M units they plan to ship. A one handheld future is very real if Sony don't get off their ass and lower the price on the system. They've been awful quiet on the PSP front of late, with even sketchy PS3 info taking the fore ahead of the PSP. That doesn't bode well. Virtua Bomba 2? PEACE.

Why is it that 99% of the posts you make have something that could spark a 300 response thread, and then you put "PEACE" at the end of 'em?

personally, i think the PSP just needs something killer that people haven't had the chance to play - or something that gives people the chance to play something they've already played but in a different way (e.g. : Ridge 8 players).

I'm gasping for a new PSP specific FPS with good mutliplayer game play like CTF. I dream of an Unreal Tournament (original version) conversion.

Also, a mobile MMORPG could spell the end of my life.

I don't think PSP will be great for FPS because the controller/PSP gives bad ass hand cramps over extend play (and this is with moderate hand movement in games like UL + LUMINES)... I'm generally not a big advocate of FPS genre on a tiny screen. I just think the auto-targeting will make it a bit unfair. Maybe PSP will change that view I have but I don't see how a genre that is better on PC (than console) can be great on a handheld (screen+console issues)

It just needs

1) KICK ASS FIGHTING (soul calibur/Tekken PSP)

2) KICK ASS RPG

3) KICK ASS PLATFORMER

all sorely lacking at the moment. I think dev houses might be afraid to commit the resources to make cat. 1+2. :'( I'm so game hungry on PSP that I'm contemplating DEATH JUNIOR

Turn the PSP upside down so that the analogue is in the top right, perhaps that would work?

... or not!

If you think FPS will generate hand cramps, 1 & 3 would probably do the same for you. In any case, Coded Arms is out in early July, so we'll soon see how well FPS controls could possibly be done on the PSP.

Even though they're all crusty ports (and could be pulled off nearly as well on DS), I think DarkStalkers Chronicle, Tales of Eternia and Ape Escape are all pretty "KICK ASS". :)

Can you imagine a touch screen Ape Escape? That whole game centered around unique uses for the dual analog sticks. You could use your stylus to swing the net to catch the apes, to control the RC vehicles, etc.
