Sony seems to be heading all-in on anti-consumer practices.

Look there are some legit concerns about Sony playing "mother knows best" with their content censorship there is nothing you can say to me that will change my mind on how their ecosystem has changed in this past year. But they aren't the worst company OP but yes they have become arrogant again.

Legit concerns

I still can't change my username but the beta people could.
I still can't use BT devices with my ps4 but I can with my Vita. It is something they can fix with a firmware update.
The store is still slow and shit even with my Ps4 Pro.
Their AAA games are cinematic and feel soulless. But I kinda get that I'm not their audience since I stopped caring about Uncharted like games years ago. They haven't taken risks in new IPs like they did in the past.

Fuck PSN anyway, last time I tried buying anything from there they kept subtracting the 1 dollar auth, and even though that was successful and they took my money it still came up with some "incorrect details" error. Fuckers took 10 dollars and I've got nothing to show for it.

Haha, how annoying

Buy digital cards through amazon.

All I can say is with the exception of the reluctant attitude towards cross play and, likeable features we've seen on other platforms and, more indigenously, the low power capacity of the DS4's battery (that genuinely IS a largely unsung issue), Sony's PlayStation 4 has been my favourite platform this generation.

Yes, it lacks the power of a PC, the backwards compatibility and cross play features on XBox One and the portable flexibility of the Nintendo Switch, but it has something that I believe is vastly more important.

Games.

Brilliant, fun, quality, exclusive games that have ruled this generation. God of War, Gravity Rush 2, Spiderman, Uncharted 4 (thought it was a bit over rated, but still very good) THOU Remastered (I know it's a remaster, but still) and my personal favourite, Horizon Zero Dawn. These games were not only very good, but sold with good ethics when AAA publishers were typically more determined than ever to rip the pennies from people's hands.

I know allot of people hate exclusives, and I understand why, but I feel they are not only a good thing for the industry, but an essential thing for the industry as well and good for the consumer in the end. Maybe upon request I'll explain why, but that's for another topic.

The point is that Sony were and are not perfect by any means, but in my opinion delivered whare it mattered most and that's why the PS4 has been so successful.

Screw high quality games. Give me more pr promises and future tech wizardry/s

Screw future tech and go for yesterdays hardware. Screw interactive gaming and welcome "cinematic experiences". Screw 60fps, 30fps with dips is the new trend. Screw native resolutions, faux dynamic scaling below 1080p is the way the go.
Screw BC, pay again for your old games. Screw freedom, pay for online twice.

Seriously i hope arrogant sony will become.... less arrogant. Their like nvidia now. Results of market dominance i suppose.

Yeah let me pay for kinect and two console because the first iteration was unbeareble. Let me dowload 100+ giga for one game. Lets make only games as service in the future so i can milk my fanbase better. Screw kamiya i have halo forza and gears over and over...
That's not arrogant.

I don't really like Sony exclusives that much, but fuck, they're still better than current Microsoft. I wonder what will happen next gen, I bought an Xbox One expecting it to return to the glorious days of the 360, but no, it was a huge disappointment. I played mostly on PC this gen until the Switch came out. I would love to see a Sony as great as with the PS2 times but we all know that's not gonna happen.

OP was PlayStation fan for 20 years according to the OP. But then Stadia came along and made him realize he never owned a PS console in his life and was just pretending.

But my question is when did Sony start controlling Japanese release dates? I'm fairly certain that's not a thing but I may be wrong. Anyone? Anyone hear of this?

Its BS like the rest of his reasons. Don't waste your time.

Completely agree with you there, its one of the reasons im mainly on PC.

Was gonna start a new thread but similar thread suggestions are pretty good.

How Sony might double down on their anti-consumer practices - Times of India

  • Potential for price hikes in games and services due to reduced competition, and Sony Tax.
  • Sony was fined 15Million USD by French Regulators to their deliberate attempt to sabotage third party PS4 Controllers via software updates.
  • Sony blocking cross platform and demanding royalties from publishers to enable online cross play
  • Greater emphasis on live-service models and platform lock-ins.
  • Risks of weakened digital ownership and subscription dependence.
  • Possible aggressive monetization and reduced innovation.

thank you chatgpt

Blocking cross platform play or charging publishers for the privilege…can't see this happening now.
It already happens:

During his testimony, Sweeney stated that Sony charges developers a fee to enable cross-play. Moreover, he went on to state that Sony is the only platform holder to do so. He also revealed that Epic had paid these charges in order to enable cross-play in Fortnite's PlayStation version

Sony charges a fee if the game is not making enough money on Playstation when compared to other platforms. It's disgusting.

Did they see too much negativity going on towards Microsoft and decided to ask a Chatbot for a quick article spin against Sony?

- Nintendo open the way towards $80 games this was inevitable one way or another.

- Yeah they are dumb for trying to do that but at least the courts put a stop to it

- It's dumb that they are still doing that but this isn't new news they have been doing this since the PS3 era

- They have cancelled nearly all of their in development Live service titles and they removed PSN requirements from their PC games if anything the exact opposite is happening at the moment

- Where did they get this random guessing from? There could be possible less monetization and increased innovation for all we know so it's a weird bullet point.

Too little effort was put into putting this together I feel like I could have written a more scathing and more relevant article against Sony.

As someone who owns a PS5, I'm more worried about Sony than Microsoft.

Yeah like I said there are far more relevant things to worry about then what little was outlined in this article.

They want to disable third party controllers? The fuck? There should be more options, especially with Dualsense and its shitty build quality. Currently you have to modify the controller on your own (like by installing hall sticks) or buy an expensive controller from Nacon or some other similar company.

There should be a larger uproar about this. Both Sony and Nintendo are manufacturing shitty controllers and ignoring hall sticks just so people will buy a new controller once a year (or even sooner).

"Possible", "Potential", "Risk of"...

We can thank GAF's similar threads feature for saving us from what certainly would've been yet another baseless, fearmongering thread.

Just an FYI for those unaware, TOI is also called the toilet paper of India and struggles to get even basic news right. A neighbour of mine had fallen out of a window( unfortunately to his death) and toi reported that news 3 times. 1st time they said it was suicide, 2nd time they said he was drunk and jumped, 3rd time they said it was a murder. During the same time period, police who were investigating had concluded on the day the neighbour died ( a security camera recorded his death) that it was an accidental death.

I highly doubt toi has any news not already available to general public and that they have bothered to do any research at all.

Not quite. Sony charges if gamers spend the vast majority of their time in a game on PSN and the majority of revenue for that game is going to other platforms. And even then, it has to meet a certain threshold for anything to be charged at all. This only triggers in extreme cases.

No, they don't block third party controllers. During the PS4 they had counterfeit Dualshocks so they blocked unlicensed controllers which was shitty for those who bought them. If it was a licenced third party controller they still work fine.

What's bizarre about this article is that many of these things have happened, with MS doing them when they were allegedly "preventing" Sony from doing it. MS blocked unlicensed third party controllers. MS hiked the price of games to $80, and hardware to $730 and $599. Went all in on GaaS with their studios, and bought the biggest GaaS games. Did away with physical to promote lock-in.

Times of India is too busy conjuring up some fear mongering article of what might happen without MS instead of doing some research and realising MS are the one who've actually done it. Somebody has been doing a lot of outsourcing and expansion in India lately (more than doubling their workforce there) and carries some political favour it seems.
