Current circumstances seems to be positioning PS5 to catch it's 2nd Wind in the next few years & become Sony's 2nd best selling console.

If you say so , the person said "Consoles " PS4 & PS5 are both PlayStation Consoles One came 3 years before Switch & the other came out 3 years after Switch
I have already proven this bullshit wrong with numbers, that you continue to ignore it tells me you weren't arguing in good faith and mistaken (which is a simple enough thing that can happen to anyone), but actively know you are wrong, and continue to argue in bad faith.

In other words you are a troll, and I hope people stop engaging with your trolling.

This thread has been fucking hilarious, it's been full of idiots making idiotic arguments. So entertaining.

If this is how you want to do it (it is completely batshit lunacy and cope of the highest order to do it this way, but I want to prove to you how wrong you are, so let's), then PS4 sold 55 million units after March 2017; using that plus the 75 million PS5 sold, the total console sales for PlayStation between 2017 to now are 130 million.

Guess what the total console sales for just the Switch are in this period.

Sony has raised the prices of hardware, software, and services three separate times this generation in every country except the U.S.

Believe it or not, there is a whole world that exists outside of the U.S.! I hope you get to see it one day

This is so fucking stupid, Sony has Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 for this year as first party exclusives, Lost Soul Aside as a second party partner game, and Marathon as a first party release that's launching Multiplatform. That's also not counting releases like Intergalactic or Wolverine.

2022:

Pokemon Legends Arceus
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Splatoon 3
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Bayonetta 3

2023:

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Pikmin 4
Fire Emblem Engage
Pokemon Detective Pikachu Returns
Metroid Prime

2024:

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Mario and Luigi: Brothership
Super Mario Party Jamboree
Emio The Smiling Man
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Just to be clear, this is not every Nintendo game released in these years, not even by the current standards we are applying, I just picked a handful of notable games to make the point. Nintendo averages one major release every month, their level of output, at least quantitatively, is incomparable to any other company on the market. The fact that this has to be explained boggles my mind.

I actually agree with you on the first half of what you said, Nintendo fanboys have a tendency to ignore the Wii U and how badly it failed; the Switch was an amazing recovery, but it was an amazing recovery from Nintendo's first attempt to go up against the PS4, which failed so badly they had to release a second system in the same generation.

That said, just as a heads up, Nintendo's reported active user figure as of last count was 125 million, which is the exact same as PlayStation's, so you are wrong about the second thing, both companies report roughly the same number of active users (obviously there is minor variation from one reporting period to the next).
Prove me wrong how?

Someone said
"Sells considerably fewer consoles than the Nintendo Switch"
And I pointed out that Switch was released in between PS4 & PS5 .

So if you can accept the 3 years advantage for Switch why can't I use that same 3 years advantage for PlayStation?

😂

Wrong about what?

The person said PlayStation "sold considerably less consoles than Switch " but PlayStation was selling PS4 & PS5 in these years which was not considerably less than what Switch sold.

Sony is positioned for extreme success with the PS5. Too many things going their way right now.

With MS effectively bowing out while simultaneously detonating a grenade in their pants with their ridiculous price increase, Sony has an open field to totally dominate the console market and they will.

Now that Trump is chickening out of the tariffs with China, it looks like Sony's decision to stay the course and not increase price of their hardware will pay dividends. They could still increase the price of their games to $80 but I don't see that impacting sales of their hardware at all. With GTA6 marketing all but secure they are in a great place having the biggest game of all time bundled with their console at a reasonable price. The fact the PS5 pro will most likely be the best place to play GTA6 (possibly the only place to play it at 60fps or close to) will only help them even more.

By the time GTA6 launches the PS5 will either be at 100 million units sold or close to, and PS5s are going to fly off shelves in a way we've never seen before once that game drops.

What am I supposed to see that goes against what I said?
PlayStation console sales since 2017 are not 190 million like you said, they re 130 million.

Even if you wanted to do the batshit insane thing and combine the sales of two systems to be able to take first place, you still wouldn't be able to, because even with that, even PS4 and PS5 put together have not outsold the Switch in this period.

So you are wrong. Take the L, move on. It happens to everyone.

Are you slow? Go back and read everything then show me saying that PlayStation sold 190 million since 2017

Alright, I misread. Apologies, that's on me.

If we want to do since 2013, then this will get even worse for the comparison:

Sony total hardware sold since 2013: 201 million (including PS3, PS4, PS5, and PS Vita, but no PSVR)
Nintendo total hardware sold since 2013: 234 million (including Wii U, Switch, and 3DS, but no Classic system)

Now you can split hairs even more to try and make Sony win, but that's the whole point, if you have to make so many exceptions to get Sony to win... maybe Sony did not win.

You're still lost my reply wasn't to give PlayStation the advantage it was to point out that Switch was released in between the 2 PlayStation Consoles & it wasn't considerably less PlayStations sold.

So Nintendo still wins his spin.

Okay, but it is considerably fewer PlayStations sold. Depending on how we are counting, the difference is 20-30 million as a bare minimum. This isn't some Xbox 360 vs PS3 scenario, this is a very conclusive result.

Now, Nintendo achieved this result with cheaper hardware, which obviously was to their benefit, but they also achieved this pretty much by themselves, given the absence of third party support on those systems compared to PlayStation, so I think it mostly evens out. Sony's results have been massively impressive, but trying to pretend they were first - when literal numbers prove otherwise - is really dumb.

Agree with most of this, but one important distinction is that Sony reports monthly active users while Nintendo reports annual active users.

Also comparing a console that came out in early 2017 with one that came out in late 2020 makes literally no sense
About as much sense where a console that's known for having strong second half Gen after Gen is in the middle of its run but has "cemented" itself as the worst.

Your context is trash. PS5 was imposible to find at a physical store for almost two years and you want to compare that to "forecast and skeptical people" just get the fuck outta here with that bullshit.

Are you under the impression the other consoles weren't supply constrained during COVID? They all were, hell even the Xbox was.

The difference is the other consoles had stronger starts and stronger first four going on five years. Sure, Sony might start putting out bangers left and right for PS5. But they are currently well below their normal output. So it's weird to say they will definitely have a strong second half because "they always do" when they've had a much weaker than normal first half, relying way more on third party deals and games than ever.

PS4 sales:
2013 to 2017: 70 millions
2017 to 2022: 47 millions

If you're talking about games, you're really being very optimistic if you think that games like Ghost of Yotei, Intergalatic or Marathon will change people's perceptions.

Uh no. Series S and Switch were everywhere, all the time. And this is not open to debate, you should know this, so let's leave it at that.

I can see that the premise of this topic really pissed a lot of people off, but if people take a second and try to be objective they'd realize the likelihood of this.

We're going to see how likely this is primarily over the next 3 months, through Circana numbers.

It's totally possible that Xbox consumers will simply pay the higher prices and not much will change, but I do find it hard to believe that will be the case. I also think it's hard to believe that a high percentage are going to jump to PC or Switch 2. So the premise that a lot of consumers aren't about to shift to PS5 seems a solid assumption.

With ~30 million users at stake, primarily in the US and GTA6 on the horizon, it's hard to believe it won't be a significant driver of console sales and the retail channels will be packed with largely only one console at the time.

People can go on the record as to where things will be in 18 months.

gta 6 is gonna make ps5 reach 150M at least.
If it's a PS5 permanent exclusive. If it ships on Xbox MS will lower the price of consoles and suck up most of the people who just want to play GTA6.
People who would buy PS5 just to play GTA6 will buy a less expensive Xbox just to play GTA6 if MS gives them that option.
The fact is that GTA6 may be the only PS exclusive game with enough pull to really make people buy a PS5.

It's not that simple to flood the retail channels with product after it doesn't sell for a year. By this time next year the ratio of PS5s to XBS on the shelves will be massive.

I believe Microsoft & Sony both had sinister plans for the launch of GTAVI this year.

Microsoft wasn't going to take a loss from people buying Xbox Series for GTAVI & boosted the price to cash in on the hype. While Sony had the $399 Call of Duty bundle going for the killshot to finish Xbox Series off before the GTAVI frenzy.

With the delay now we're looking at PS5 having a user-base of close to 100 million before the release of GTAVI & this will give a PS2 vs OG Xbox landscape & at that point it's already over for Xbox Series.

If we're talking about game sales...

PS4: 1.562 billion
Switch: 1.391 billion

PlayStation players buy more games overall vs. Nintendo players.

I recently sold my Switch, but when I had it I did end up buying less games on it than on my PS5.

The reason was because Sony offer better deals in their sales, with games on sale being cheaper on PS5 than on the Switch. Even without the sales, games are still normally cheaper on PlayStation.

I'll give you an example. Both the Switch and PS5 have the original Devil May Cry games. On the Switch, you can only buy each title separately and each games costs £15.99. That's £47.97 if you want to buy all three. On PlayStation, you can buy all three games in the HD bundle for £24.99. You can also buy all three OG games and DMC4 in a bundle for £39.99. That's a hell of a better deal than what the Switch is offering.

Here is another example. The Witcher 3 complete edition is £49.99 on the Switch. On the PS5, it's £34.99! You're paying £15 more on the Switch for an inferior version of the game.

I don't know why this is the case. Somebody is going to have to educate on me on this. Is it because Nintendo charge third party companies more? Is there some kind of Switch tax?

Either way, I bought more games on the PS5 because it was cheaper to do so.

Cartridges cost more. And also you get a Nintendo fuck you tax.

Sony is in a weird position where they might inherit significant marketshare overnight.

Normally it might take some time for that transition to happen but that unprecedented shift in pricing in both directions might spark that faster than we might think.

Sony might sell 250K units in a month and Microsoft would have sold 100-125K units in that same month. That could turn Sony's month into 325-350K units. Sony might have thought they had 3 months stockpile, but that could easily end up being 2 months instead.

Over the course of the year plus the boost for the holidays, you're looking at easily 1.5-2 million extra units in the US alone. This is going to be even more pronounced in Europe.
