Sony Sells Metreon, SF

This is kind of related, but I didn't think it was worth its own topic - Sony is spinning off its Sony Plaza business in Japan. These were typically small stores and kiosks near stations selling makeup, snacks and all sorts of other bits and bobs.

The movie theater was absurdly overpriced.

Welcome to big city movie prices. If you think the Metreon is bad, do yourself a favor and don't go to a movie in New York.

The PSX store was ok, but nothing special and the games cost more than MSRP.

...What? Every title in there is straight MSRP, including Guitar Hero. They weren't tacking on a $10 premium like those low-lifes at EB.

And for the love of God people, the Playstation Store and Sony's "Buy Our Shit" store are staying in place.

I lived most of my life in LA and the prices were never that bad, even at places like Mann's Chinese Theater. They're probably all the same price now, though. I also distinctly recall the Metreon theater playing commercials before movies (real commercials, not the slideshows) prior to other theaters doing the same.

Well, except for those fucking LA Times ads. No, I don't want to read the Calander section, thanks.

Their policy probably changed (since it was so absurd), but I definately recall seeing $40 games going for $50 a few years back (I'm thinking Ratchet/Jak).
Yes, some outlet mall in the North Bay is surely more prestigious than Union Square. "Big" has multiple meanings you know.
Free parking = better than. And only 15 miles up the 101 is Coddingtown Mall. It's not like their Old Navy is any less prestigious than the Union Square Old Navy.

Santa Rosa is your gateway to shopping!

As someone who worked at the Metreon (Sony Style for a little more than a year), I know the mall was losing money from the start and never really started making it up. The rent for any vendors there was simply exhorbitant, and really the only place that was doing well on its lease was the Lowes theatre; the bar/restaurant on the second floor changed out three times, space was essentially created for new spots in the mall, and Sony itself folded a couple of its spaces.

It's a shame, really; Music 101 was awesome for allowing you to happily listen to the entire album for ANY CD you wanted to pick out. It also made for great music for us SS employees to pipe through our cozy respective areas. My highlight while running between AIBO demos and the VAIO section of the store was loading a bunch of songs from a friends' band (hi Che) on all the computers to auto-play instead of David Byrne. Go Ee!

God, I miss some of the staff at Sony Style. Not surprisingly, ALL of them have since moved on. Somehow the staff setting ridiculous sales goals for everyone in a place that mainly just gets foot traffic from trade shows (the best was having Macworld fucks snort and chortle when they saw VAIO displays) just didn't turn out well. Why? Oh, it boggles the mind.
