Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

That's... insane, wtf?
A studio that made good remasters / remake for a decade, suddenly gets shut down because one, as usual, cancelled live service game, that they probably didn't even want to do in the first place?
Come on, what the hell, it's ALWAYS the same pattern, when will they learn about these stupid gaas ffs.

The gaas trend honestly must feel like a mafia deal on studios, there's no escape, they force a GAAS project on you, and at this point you know you're doomed. Either your game gets cancelled or flop, and you're dead, or your game does succeed, but you will be stuck maintining that game or making other gaas projects forever, without ever being able to work on a traditional game again. No escape. It's awful.

Stupid Sony.

Tango was BY FAR Microsoft's cheapest studio to operate by virtue of being their smallest (in terms of headcount) by a wide margin AND being located in Japan where salaries are peanuts. All of their games would have been significantly less to develop than any other 1st party titles, their dollar cost run rate was likely 75%+ cheaper than every other Microsoft Game Studio.
No one here knows what it cost to run Tango, their games lost money, but more importantly, the games they wanted to develop also had no future. No one funds games they know will fall flat financially.

Which is likely the reason why Bluepoint was shut down as well, maybe there was a reason they couldn't do the sort of remakes they did before. Maybe they were too expensive now, needed to scale up, or some key personell was gone and the equation doesn't work anymore.

MM is working on Sony's answer to Roblox.
Sony doesn't understand Roblox. The nearly unmoderated nature of it is the appeal. The game is just a chat background basically. I don't know if a company like Sony is willing, or should be willing, to take on the liability to make a competitor to Roblox that competes with it in the correct arena. Roblox is the 4chan for gen alpha. A company with the public presence of Sony can only give them reddit. The gameplay is completely ancillary to the Roblox experience. MM is over there in the UK getting stoned of their own farts and ketamine. That's a team who could have gotten the axe well before Bluepoint if they were on the SimpaticoStation.

Who deemed Concord fit to release yet was willing to pull the plug on it very quickly? Didn't they sense it might not succeed much earlier? Obviously not, so why didn't they see this?

And now, why is a studio , clearly competent, been allowed to not release a game jn six years when Sony themselves have some depth in IP they could use to revitalise with a modern take.

They could have even worked with the likes of Konami on a new Castlevania that would improve on the likes of The Lords of Shsdow ganes or work on a much requested MGS1.

The same people who are deeming Fairgames continue to get funded, developed and released - Upper management

One wonders if they did a Bloodborne remake instead of the GOW GaaS... I think it would have sold pretty well and garnered Sony some good press with their enthusiasts. There's probably at least a boss or two floating around on a hard drive somewhere. They already had the foundation of the game. They could have cranked it out pretty quick.

I don't think anyone will argue that the cost of making games has significantly increased but if Sony was needing to shut down a studio, bluepoint was an odd choice. Maybe Sony is deciding not to do remakes anymore?

Nintendo or even Xbox needs to give those devs a home, both companies have a treasure trove of old IP's that need a rebirth.

Considering how Xbox has been closing studios left and right and cancelling their projects I don't think they're a good choice at all

Sony acquiring Bluepoint specifically to do quality remakes and remasters only to discover they have nothing to remake or remaster because Playstation was built on third party strength is Peak 2026 Sony
Or maybe sony is retarded enough to hire them to make gaas .. just like they did with bend .. and since they failed they got axed. Maybe remakes was not Sony's plans at all

And yes as proven over and over again this gen, sony is retarded enough to follow this line of thinking no matter how absurd it sounds

Nintendo is a good idea and Retro is down the road from Bluepoint.

They had about 100 employees in a country with an average developer wage of about $50K. Their closest peer, Double Fine, has a similar headcount, but is located in one of thr most expensive cities in the world which will command salaries in the $150K range.

I only want to chime in and say: Fuck Hulst and everyone who enabled him.

THAT SAID, I don't really think we will miss Bluepoint. They did the remake of Shadow of the Colossus (one of my favorite games of all time) and people complained about the "creative liberties" and the lack of emotion in Wander. Likewise, for Demon's Souls (another of my favorite games of all time), purists complained about the "vibe" being off.

I do think Demon's Souls is pure eye candy and a showcase for the PS5, and it did wonders for the PS5 reveal. That shit looks like those fake tech demos, but it was actually real and ready at launch.

It was obvious that Bluepoint had great technical teams but so-so creative minds. I do think that under better leadership, we could have eaten good, but man, what a sad generation. If Sony had just stayed in their own lane and committed to more exclusive/single-player games (what they excelled at during the previous generations), we right now would be showering in so many crazy games.

This is almost as baffling as Naughty Dog making an online TLOU for years only to realize they have to keep supporting it.
Imagine they would've made an extraction type TLoU Factions. It probably would've sold twice as much copies as ARC Raiders.

Seriously incompetent decision making.

Now maybe we can get a respectable version of PS3 Demon Souls that doesn't absolutely butcher the art design/direction/intent

Horizon Hunters Gathering gets to liven on but Bluepoint Studio gets Shuts Down.

What are terrible timeline we are in.

Btw .. thats why Ps6 will not comeout next year..

I've been saying.. THEY DONT HAVE FCKING GAMES ... to launch with the system .

Any fucker still wanting to die on the hill of "sony gaas strategy wont mess up their first party output" ??

That poll saying this was PS worst gen will continue to shine trough this whole gen, and the nay sayers are dropping month by month.

I hope the next Xbox is a banger of a hybrid system, it will make it easier to go back to PC .. Im out of playstation, fuck it.

TLOU online was mechanically solid (it did have some issues like respawn points), but turning a round based shooter into something monetizable is easier said than done and extraction shooters weren't the soup du jour when it started development. TLOU setting does seem like a natural fit though.

What in the fuck is Sony doing??? No one wants a God of War GAAS title! Bluepoint can make an excellent Demon's Souls Remake, but can't be bothered with a Bloodborne remaster/remake which would yield gangbuster results? You pull this Concord shit that no one wants and pissed away hundreds of millions of dollars, banking that its the next best thing. Yet, the only good thing from that was the nice looking Concord DualSense controller.

You release a random ass Horizon kiddie game instead of pushing for a Killzone remake/remaster that the audience would really enjoy. And wonder why shit is a JOKE.

And yet, you pull the plug on Bluepoint? One of your best studios for remaster your back catalog and you shut them down? Bluepoint's strength is remasters. Imagine a remastered Killzone or Resistance or Infamous collection; that's like printing money right there!! Demon's Souls Remake was the game that sold me on getting a PS5 here. And to hear the studio getting shut down is such a slap in the face.

Incompetent ass leadership. Hurst needs to GO.

The chances of any remakes of old games from Sony were greatly diminished with this. If you are ok with that because you didn't like Bluepoints work then sure, I guess nothing was lost. Seems a bit short-sighted to me though.

I would buy it if they could somehow just put the really good emulator version on Steam and give me cloud saves. It doesn't even need to be "remade".

This has to be the most confusing shutdowns we've seen in some time.

I would like to know internally what was going on with the team that made them shut them down because for the most part Sony is usually been like extremely lenient with teams, like to the point of them literally releasing multiple bad games.

But blue point never really released anything bad.... So I'm not entirely sure what could have occurred in that time frame.

Its odd cause I would assume them doing more ports to PC would mean they would need Blue Point more.

I mean, before this I would have never thought that, but now....anyone is up to get axed.

Tbh Sony does have quite a bit of bloat developers that really aren't developing much. Bluepoint I wouldn't have expected since there's other they could have chopped.

We got thrown out with the bath water in favor of the modern audience.

There must be other shittier studios they could have dropped. Bluepoint? What the fuck Sony? This is like MS with the Xbox brand level of stupid.

I swear, Sony's biggest fans are too fucking perpetually locked into console war bullshit to provide them with meaningful feedback. This kind of bullshit is the result.

Okay, so he started accusing "PlayStation fans" of behaving like the Halo "monkey" Craig...
Miles away

There isn't a single "PlayStation Era" site giving Concord an 8/10 like there was with Redfall.

The big factor here is Sony not being able to recognize talent and see through spreadsheets. If they have to go lean, Bluepoint is exactly the kind of team you'd want in your bullpen. I'm the biggest critic of the art in DS Remake, but on the technical level and to have it ready on launch day? That's rare these days.
