Sony: Vita was designed for a different world, but changes are afoot

I really dont know how or when indie games became a thing. But I'm already sick and tired of hearing about them. Just give me games like the ps2 era and the beginning of the wii era and not something the equivalent of a flash game or gameboy advance game.

Good thing indie games aren't just flash games and are giving us experiences as varied as games in the PS2 era then isn't it?

It has games but nothing major apart from batman and Killzone and gow collection jump out from that list really, oh hotline 2 i guess.

Wasn't Minecraft announced for the vita? That could be huge if its actually the full game and not the mobile version.

No it really wont.

Attaching a controller to a phone is something the mass market will not adapt to easily; its a weird counter-intuitive munging together of two very different products. Its hard to tell people to disregard the primary interface (the touch screen) of a device where that form-factor is a key selling-point.

And most importantly, the economics of the software scene on smartphones/tablets is a far more constraining factor than the power of the hardware.

The Vita, as I've suggested in the past, does have a future as a portable indie-gaming device, because its something that can be clearly marketed albeit at a niche audience, especially when acting as a "second-screen" for PS4.

Mass market wont adopt Vita, while Apple sells about 14 million IPads in one quarter. Even if just a little amount of IPad owners buy the controller, it will be instantly a more relevant plattform than Vita. Well, it already is.

Just give us a few more big games, Sony, please.

And let me find someone who wants to get rid off a 32 gig card for little money.

Pulling a Wii on the PSP probably would've been a good idea, I agree. I think power matters less in the portable space anyway. Slap on a touchscreen, promote it like a new console with games that use the new features, sell it dirt cheap and make sure its durable enough for kids to drop.

Didn't even need to do that

Take the Vita's guts, put it in a PSPGo, add touchscreen. Boom. The things that hold the price of the vita up are the OLED screen and back touch panel. Both things that realistically have no real baring on the consoles appeal for the mass market. You could have a a much higher res screen than the 3DS and still not tie yourself to such expensive components.

something like this was perfect.

As someone who plays more portable games due to budget and time constraints and preferences, the one of the reasons why I haven't picked up a Vita (I am going to eventually) is because of cost. The price of memory cards is still a little high, but I can hopefully find a bundle that has a good size memory stick.

The Vita does have games that I would love to play in the near future (FF X remakes, Soul Sacrifice, among later releases) and has a lot of classic PS1 and PS2 games that I would love to play. Again, cost has been a deterrent that has been somewhat rectified by the price cut.

Of course it wont, that's why I wrote that marketing it a niche audience is the way to go.

The reality is that the market for handheld gaming is now so large that successfully appealing to a niche within it is enough to float a business on, especially if a large portion of its revenue stream comes from software and services that are also provided on other platforms.

Killzone has had a 3 year development. If that is not an AAA I don't know what it is.

Killzone Mercenary is basically a game with PS3 polish and graphical prowess using the Killzone formula but refined for a handheld. It is fantastic. Unbelievable that a portable system can offer such a high end FPS experience.

I havent seen anything on 3DS that offers anything comparable. I feel that as someone who primarily games on PC and uses my consoles to compliment that experience , Vita has a lot appealing to my taste. I am still waiting for 3DS to hit that stride that DS had. The DS library is amazing. I feel like the Vita is becoming the successor to both DS and PSP that I've wanted.

I'd be happy just getting Disgaea and Atelier type games. Good for killing time.

I can name tons of games that had development cycles that were longer that were nowhere near AAA.

Time in development is not a good indication.

I don't know that much about Tearaway, but the Killzone titles have all seemed like B-tier games to me.

Good thing you're wrong. I've played KZ and it's far from B-tier.

As far as Tearaway goes, it looks amazing and has nothing but positive buzz.

This will happen

Oh God how many battery pack do I have to carry around if I wanted to play more graphical demanding games? Like just Mario 64 tier stuff?

I don't know how the corporation see things but those smartphone games can never hold my attention for more than a few mins at a time (play while waiting the lift or something, and get deleted in a few days) while Vita/3DS I can sit down for full hour and still wanting more, they are completely different experience and never overlap in my case.

I don't understand all the "different time" bullshit gibberish they are on about, Vita needs more games, good games, and that's it. Don't use it to chase the tablet gaming crowd, they will never buy a delicate gaming machine anyway.

Microsoft once had a concept to make a handheld that would play all XBLA games.

This is what I would love the Vita to be. A handheld to play the latest games on PSN. (And not just indies) Only the PS4 can really save the vita now but Sony has to contribute with the opportunities the PS4 brings to the vita. A year from now the PS4 will probably have a large user and many studios will be developing for it because of the great self publishing. I can see studios such as Double Fine, inXile entertainment, and Telltale Games creating their own games for it. What Sony needs to do is help these studios port their games to Vita as these are the studios that can sell systems. During next-gen Sony really need to be more aggressive in getting games on PSN ported to the Vita. A mobile console that plays the latest PSN games would definitely help sell the system.

Another damn price drop in the memory cards wouldn't hurt either Sony!

They should get Rockstar to do an updated San Andreas port for Vita. Use the superior PC/Xbox version, update a lot of the visuals and textures etc.

It's just simply lack of games. Unlike Nintendo where you buy it for the Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing stuff, a lot of potential Vita owners are being served by things like Tablets and Smartphones. Hell Madden 25 my little cousins were playing free on ipad and iPhone recently. Why the hell would they ever buy Vita?

So much is wrong with a slider device like that.

His language suggests that there are other plans for the VITA platform. More than what was announced today?

Xperia Play 2 maybe?
