Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

HI GAF,

This thread almost convinced me to buy this Sony 4K TV since I'm gonna buy the PS4 Pro sooner or later.

But recently, a friend sent me this reddit thread about Sony TV's being terrible: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/5edhty/psa_sony_removes_90_pages_thread_on_their/

Any of you guys have the problems mentioned ?

Has nothing to do with this tv since it is very good with input lag plus there is already a thread on this issue on GAF so you may want to discuss there. Those Sony TV's aren't terrible, they just have higher input lag then is normal or what gamers are now accustomed to. A lot of the televisions like the X930D and X850D have had their input lag times halved with new firmware updates. 58ms is high, but unplayable or terrible, no. Anything under 60ms is ultimately okay while under 30ms is ideal. This is why you should never buy televisions without proper research.

Ok thank you, this was the last concern that kept me from buying it. I'm gonna go with the XD8005B !

If you're after a Sony TV for your gaming needs there is really no other model that beats this one. I've had the X800D for a month now and absolutely adore the games' picture quality on it.

Lowest input lag in SONY's 4K HDR TV line-up... you decide.

Finally had a chance to hook up my 49" last might. Damn. I didn't expect that big of a leap from my lgb6500 from only a few years ago but the colours immediately stood out to me.

I'm looking for some good settings for the 49". General settings or console gaming settings are good.

A lot of the settings I find are geared towards the 43".

Is that KD65XD7504 set on sale on Amazon UK any good ? I heard 2016 4K Sony tv have bad lag but that was it was fixed with software update. Ow- does had have any rec for a 65 inch 4K tv sub 1500 quids??

The input lag really is special such clear picture even in fast motion too there's like zero smear so awesome love this TV thanks again GAF for the recommendation

I'm thinking about buying one of these and wall mount it but I have a couple of questions.

Does HDR work on every HDMI port? Because apparently on my Samsung HDR only works when I plug the Pro to HDMI 1.

How long HDMI 2.0 cable can be without signal degradation?

Thanks guys

Just 2 and 3. Not sure about the length of an HDMI 2.0 cable.

HDR works on all ports (verified with my OG PS4 and UC4+TLOU) but 4k60 HDR only on 2+3.

I use a 10m HDMI cable from my PC to the TV and it works fine even in the most "demanding" situations (4K 60Hz HDR) but official spec is 9m I think. Obviously also depends on the cable quality. I use this one https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00FK0YSOY/

So do a lot of you guys notice light bleed on this set? Going to return my 49x800d but might give another one another go. If it seems like light bleed is common I'll return it for something else.

Just checked for this and i didn't get any issues with it.

Should i post a photo of it?

Other forums talk about this being common?

I yet to try the PC on HDR2 and 3 for 444 HDR. Im lazy tho. Trying to figure out the best settings for Dishonored to run ok and look better. :( This game...

Yeah I dunno a bit of talk about it on avs forum.

I don't have any other options other than 8 bit 4:2:0 in Nvidia control panel on hdmi 1 or 4 still.

It's weird because there were 10 bit and 12 bit options yesterday when I first plugged into hdmi 4, but now those are gone.

What HDMI cable version is needed for 4K HDR use on PC on X800D, 2.0a or 2.0b?

Either/or. Both specs allow for 4k/60 and HDR. So any cable rated for 2.0a or 2.0b spec will be good. Any 2.0 high speed hdmi cable should technically still provide enough juice for 4k/60 and HDR. The port receiving the signal is the most important part.

Thanks for the answers.

I feared HDR would only work on HDMI 1. That would suck to mount it on the wall

My friend claims that his brand new 43XD80 from Hungary retains colors even at extreme angles, he fears he somehow ended up with with IPS in a 43" model.

I think that he just did not have an experience with modern VA panels. What does GAF think?

Rtings makes it seem like VA are no-go at all when most retain decent color well until 25-30 degrees angle. 43" only comes in a VA panel. He just probably expected them to be completely white on the side. They just look a bit washed out etc.

Apologies if this is a silly question but is there any truth with hearing from others that HDR is much less useful on any sets under 50" Is there a technical reason?

If I plan on grabbing the 43" for my room and sit close enough then is it going to be an issue compared to a set that is say 55" and sitting farther away? Or no difference?

That's not true. HDR completely changes the look of the image. That would be noticeable even on postage stamp.

Most likely you heard about 1080p vs 4K differences on sub 50" screens. That difference is smaller if you sit away.

yup, thats bogus.

Ok so I exchanged my set for another 49x800d and I'm impressed. Zero black light bleed. I think I just had a bunk panel because the contrast and blacks seem much better as well.

Uncharted 4 looks awesome.

Still stuck at 4k 60Hz 8 bit 420 on hdmi 1 and 4. Not sure how you guys have different settings available in Nvidia control panel.

Do you guys use the black adjust and contrast enhancer in game mode? I am using low black adjust and medium contrast enhancer and it seems to help with black levels without crushing. Does this impact input lag?

Also, is it normal for the light sensor to be stuck on in game mode on the ps4? I click it to off and it just stays on.

You can turn it off, but I do remember it getting 'stuck'. I think I changed modes, turned it off and switched back. I don't use any of the things you asked. Here are some 6500K calibrated game mode settings.

Cool thanks, I was able to get backlight unstuck! I ended up making some changes. Mainly backlight needs to be higher for me because Rtings I believe tests in pretty much a pitch dark room to hit that 100 nit for Sony's in a dark room.

If you have any ambient light in the room you're going to want to be closer to max backlight.

Also I've found that changing color space to rec 2020 improves colors in HDR PS4 gaming (uncharted).

I think Expert 1 looks better with Color at 60.

I've found that the black adjust does not seem to do much of anything, but I think that medium adaptive contrast while HDR gaming dramatically improves contrast without crushing, at least on the IPS 49x800d.

My settings for HDR gaming on the 49X800D IPS:

Picture Mode: Game
Auto Picture Mode: Off
Light Sensor: Off

Menu: Advanced Settings:

Submenu:Brightness
Brightness: Min if in near pitch dark room, Max during daylight, 30-40 if you have other lights on in the same room as the TV at night time.
Contrast: 90 (if you go higher than 90 the whites get clipped in uncharted brightness slider, even at min brightness in the in game slider).
Gamma: 0
Black Level: 50
Black Adjust: Off
Adv. Contrast enhancer: Medium seems to dramatically help contrast and blacks without crushing on the IPS model

Submenu: Color
Color: 60
Hue: 0
Color temperature: expert 1, or warm depending on your preference. Lean towards warm as expert 1 sort of seems to put an unnatural reddish filter over everything. Warm is a bit cooler but not overly blue. Rtings would suggest expert 1 and if you like a warmer image go with that.
Adv. color temperature: Do not have any 49x800d reference points to do 10 point color adjustment so just left this as is.

Submenu: Clarity
Sharpness: 50
Reality Creation: Off

Submenu: Motion
Motionflow: Custom
Clearness: Max

Submenu: Video Options:
HDR mode: Auto
HDMI video range: Auto
Color Space: Rec 2020 while playing HDR games, 4K HDR blu-rays, or HDR streaming content. Otherwise Auto.

These are great in non hdr (hooked up through PSVR for now). Just went neutral in colour temp.

Cool, good deal. Neutral will be quite a bit cooler, if you like that look great!

Edit, now that I'm looking at it I feel like Warm is a better setting for the IPS panel than Expert 1. Expert seems to put an unnatural reddish filter over everything while warm is a bit cooler and looks more natural, but not like everything is too blue, where expert 1 looks like everything is too red.

I just got one yesterday, the 43 inches one. It's amazingly slim and bigger than I thought it would be.

Great TV. Even shitty YouTube videos look great on it.

just as a FYI: Auto color space will default to Rec2020 during HDR gameplay.

Yes, backlight, brightness and contrast can be adjusted based on room lighting conditions. In my dark room settings, I can easily crank the contrast to max or 95 and not clip anything lol.

EDIT: The Witness requires moving from auto colorspace to rec709, with HDR enabled to retain the proper color mappings.

Uncharted 4 there is a noticeable effect moving colorspace off of auto to rec 2020.

I checked on the TV swapping between auto and Rec2020, no change. Then I looked on my AVR, and it reports 12-bit YUV422 BT.2020.

What are your PS4 Pro output video settings? Mine are set to all auto to produce this result. Also, have you rev'ed to the latest firmware?

I think you are right, I was cycling to the right and it looked different. To the left auto and 2020 look the same. Sorry my bad!

Quick question: How do I force YUV 4:2:0 on this TV? Do I even need to?

When I go to Uncharted HDR everything on Auto for Pro and TV it defaults to YUV 4:2:2 with HDR and 4K. Same with Infamous and other HDR games.

Is that enough for 10 bit HDR? Just want to make sure I don't have to adjust any settings to drop down to YUV 4:2:0.

Just hoping we get a Youtube update to enable Youtube HDR.

This is working fine for the Sony Bravia line, and it appears to be defaulting to 12-bit 422. Some people sets are having issues with the 12-bit, and are getting reduced to 8-bits, so they are having to manually force YUV420 10-bit.

The only HDR game that I have found that has any issues to date is The Witness, and I made a thread about it, and the dev has even chimed in, which is really great news in terms of possibly getting a fix.

EDIT: to force it, you just go into resolutions in video output settings.

Thanks dude I'll check it out just in case, thanks again.

I'm kind of confused on the VESA Mount brackets. I want to have this on a swivel mount, but i can't find any that are 200 x 300, but i can find vice versa.
Has anyone mounted this with a swivel full motion mount and can give me recommendations?

Ok so I have now checked out Forza, Uncharted, the Revenant, Amazon Man in the High Castle, and Marco Polo, and I can definitively say the HDR is more dramatic and better looking than the H8C. Much more vibrant colors, and now that I have a panel without bleed and uneven lighting on the 49X800d the contrast and black levels are fine with the medium adaptive contrast activated.

I would still say the H8C is a great set for $500, especially if you can get the 55 inch for that.

Another great thing about this set is the access to Amazon HDR content. They have a lot more than Netflix it seems like.

Is there any way to see the Android TV stuff in 4K?

All the TV settings/apps seem to be in 1080p.

Netlfix and Amazon have uhd stuff and some things with hdr. You need the Netflix plan that includes 4k and Amazon prime.

I think vudu has uhd movies too, haven't logged in to that yet.
