Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Not sure. I did get some nice HDMI cables to go with all of my new setup.

http://www.sony.com/electronics/televisions/xbr-x800d-series/specifications

Here are the specs.

Also, when using anythign from PC to PS4 to XB1 S i set my HDMI to be 'Enhanced format' in the settings.

Check this for some more info on the TV.

Support for 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 @ 10 bit is different than 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 @ 8 bit. HDMI 2.1 may not even resolve the former issue unless somebody else has an idea?

Edit:

4K @ 60Hz 4:4:4 8bit is automatically supported by the HDMI 2.0 spec, but HDMI 2.0b makes no mention of 4K @ 60 Hz 4:4:4 10-bit

I got my X800D/XD8088 earlier today to use as a PC monitor (replacing a Samsung UE40JU6400) and for 4K HDR gaming but the lower third of the screen has a noticeable pink tint mostly notice when using Windows Explorer or a browser i.e white backgrounds and a slight green tint in the center.

Anyone else notice this when using the Sony as a PC monitor? I don't have this issue with my Samsung. Is this just how the panel is in the Sony?

Might want to track your grayscale. You could be clipping white.

Screw it, £620 is pretty reasonable and I've been using the same HDTV since before the PS3 even came out. Let's do this.

You're going to love it especially if you have been using the same one for almost a decade. You might want to also check around locally. I am not too familiar with the uk retail shops but you might find a local one has for cheaper than Amazon etc.

Yeah it's going to be a huge step up! I can't wait to see Forza Horizon 3 and Ratchet & Clank on it.

I can get a better warranty from Richer Sounds or John Lewis locally but Amazon is cheapest.

It's a vertical viewing angle issue with the panel on the Sony as the tint disappears if I move back a few feet more from the screen. My current viewing distance is 3ft as I am using it as a PC monitor.

I don't have this issue with the Samsung UE40JU6400 at 3ft.

I have the xbr43x800d tv. And was trying out the ratchet and clank update. When it activates hdr the tv set its brightness to maximum and picture kind of has a washed gray look. Is my hdr not set right? Or I have to calibrate the picture manually. Or I am expecting too much HDR quality from that TV. I know it has 8bit screen. So hdr quality is probably pretty low?
And yes I have a 4k capable HDMI wire. Is like that for you guys too? Or is there certain way you calibrated the TV? This is my HDMI cable:

Some TV's have different calibration settings for the HDR mode so you may have to make adjustments after HDR turns on.

dude slow down. the set is fine, the HDR looks great.

Start with your PS4 settings. Can be RGB auto, HDR auto, and Deep Color auto.

Next, make sure your set is in

picture mode: game
auto p.m. off.
Brightness (this is the backlight, and goes to max when HDR signal is fed in. thats ok).
color 50
light sensor off
black level & contrast (you can uses a set-up disc)
black adjust off
adv. contact enhancer off
live color off
reality creation off
clearness is ok
video auto HDR
video hdmi video range auto
color space auto

I have found that none of the PS$ settings have to be forced for it to communicate properly with the sony.

under settings, external input, make sure you have HDMI signal format set to enhance 4k HDMI signal format.

Thats it.

does it matter? I'm a bit lost here

Dolby Vision is essentially HDR12, it is a different standard and one currently less prolific. The sets that have Dolby Vision also cost more because it uses additional hardware. Basically everything made for "HDR" is going to be made for HDR10, whereas some other stuff will also support Dolby Vision. Technically Dolby Vision is the superior standard (sets that have Dolby Vision will both fully utilize HDR10 content, and the content that does support Dolby Vision will have access to a wider range of both colors and brightness), but the fact that it needs to be licensed means you won't always have content that fully supports the standard's higher capabilities. If you can afford a set that has it, it's worth considering, though I don't know if there are any sets with Dolby Vision that have workable input lag for gaming purposes.

Edit - also as mentioned above none of the current consoles support Dolby Vision so it would only be relevant for content outside gaming unless future consoles support it (which is something I guess you'd have to consider if you're going to be willing to drop that kind of cash on a television since you'd expect to be able to use it for that long).

Looks like that on mine too, like the light sources in the game are too blurry, colors look ok though. Haven't really had the chance to play with the settings and this is my first hdr game so not sure what is normal or not. I changed from auto to limited and it looked a little different.

does this tv a Premium HDMI input port ?

It has 2 special HDMI in ports, numbers 2 and 3.

They have some special sauce for 4K and HDR or something, not quite sure what it is though.
Keep in mind though that all current sets can only do 4k 10bit HDR at 4:2:0 chroma sub-sampling. Part of why I'm holding out. Hoping for a new HDMI revision soon.

I thought this TV was RGB and HDR at 4:4:4?

All 4 ports are HDMI 2.0 or more allowing for 4K, HDMI 2 and 3 are HDMI 2.0a and are the ones that allow full HDR. Just change the hdmi port to enhanced once you have your games console or player set up to the ports in the menus.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but this TV does nearest-neighbour (point sampled) upscaling of a 1080p HDMI input if you set the picture mode to Graphics instead of Game.

1 input pixel maps perfectly to 4 display pixels without any blurring. I'd only ever seen Panasonic UHD TV's offering this before.

The same picture processing features are locked out in Graphics mode as in Game mode so it should have the same input latency or better but I can't exactly test this. HDR still works in Graphics mode.

If you're worried about 1080p inputs looking worse on this than your existing 1080p TV of the same size, this is an extremely useful option.

Sony upscaling is best in show. This television doesn't have the best processor, that would be the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme in the new Z9D, and the 4K HDR Processor X1 in other flagships like the X930D but this has perhaps the 3rd best in the market with the 4K X-Reality Pro. Easily better than any other manufacturer out there and paired with their triluminous display and wcg gives you insane colors.

Having watched 4K content of all kinds, 1080p is very lackluster but watching 1080p blu-rays and watching how the processor handles it is crazy. Watched Tomorrowland yesterday on Netflix on 1080p and the movie on this set looked crazy good.

What about PC mode? I was under the impression that this TV didn't blur anything when scaling 1080p

At 1080p sure. But the limitations on HDMI 2.0 are there.

So I actually hadn't tried any HDR or 4K content on this set yet (only seen upscaled 1080p stuff, which to be fair this TV does something wonderful), but I decided to pick up Ratchet & Clank instead of waiting until my Pro arrived to check out HDR.

My goodness. What a gorgeous game. Despite how powerful my PC is, I was still really blown away, and this is just on the regular PS4. Has made me a lot more excited to see what the Pro can do with this display.

I'm officially bummed-out about X800D [XD8005] pricing in my region. 43" model costs 750-770€, which is well above my budget. Closest alternative is 40" KU6300 [KU6000] with bearable ~500€ pricetag, but I almost don't even want to consider it since it has limited color gamut and worse motion blur. I don't want limited HDR.

Looking at the current market right now, 43" X800D would be perfect fit for my PC montor and HDR gaming needs, but the price needs to come down. :-/

Nothing can beat production values of well-made exclusive console game. PC has horsepower, but console exclusives can really punch above their weight with their presentation.

Enjoy the game, it's really great. Campaign is long and varied, just wait to see some later worlds.

I payed 750 for mine and am pretty satisfied.

Who knows, maybe I will have luck and at CES someone will announce good entry 40-43" 4K HDR model that also has FreeSync. I currently rock 32" 1080p Samsung as my PC monitor, and PS4 is plugged in it also.

Sadly I think we won't see Adaptive sync on a TV until Nvidia supports it. So not in the foreseeable future.

How about the cinema pro mode? I use that. Looks good.

Ok GAF you guys are confusing me now, I don’t get why everyone keeps recommending the KS8000 Samsung over the Sony, every PC richards’s and Best Buy I go to the Sony one looks cleaner. And the OLED LG has the best blacks, that’s the only consistent thing I’ve been able to verify for myself.

This Sony's screen has a excellent color gamut [wider than even high end Samsungs models], but it is not that bright. It manages ~370nits, while KS8000 can easily go over 1000 [which is the reason why it is priced so highly]. But to be clear, even X800D can cause user to close its eyes when something bright is on screen. BDmovies/standard content are rated to be at ~110nits if I remember correctly. HDR content is most of the time in that range also, but when bright or dark areas are on screen, contrast and brightness can totally change the image and show much more [natural looking] detail compared to regular TV sets. The wider color gamut also shows much more collors, for example finally enabling TV sets to show the true color of Ferarri cars.

X800D is popular because it is the best entry level 4K HDR TV [cheaper KU6300 from samsung is OK, but its really limited color gamut defeats the purpose of getting it for HDR] avaiable right now. Samsung is also a bit better with lag, but really not by much.

KS8000 is popular because it is really awesome.

LG OLEDs are popular... because dat OLED.

Sony upscale and interpolation is by far the best from what I can tell.

I just checked all the picture modes and only 'Graphics' performs a nearest-neighbour upscale.

I've checked further and this only applies to a 1080i/p source. If you feed it 720p, you don't get a nearest-neighbour 1 pixel to 3x3 pixels upscale.

For most content, especially filmed video content, you won't notice a difference from normal viewing distances but it's a great option to have, especially for pixel-art games that render to a sharp 1080p grid.
