Sources: Banjo-Kazooie, Sea of Thieves director leaves Rare after 35 years, following Everwild cancellation

Stop, stop! It's already dead!

When I saw the news of the cancellation I wondered if Gregg was still there and if so what he would do. Wonder if he will join his brother at Playtonic?

Just close the studio. Fuck it it's dead anyway.

The only reason it's still open because sea of thieves didn't die yet.

A rare game these days in in fact rare. These guys' best days were in the 90's.

No new proper Banjo. No new Conker. No new Jet Force Gemini. F8ck Rare. They're incapable of releasing anything, so it doesn't matter whoever leaves this worthless dev.

I mean he didn't do much these past 6 years. Their single-minded idea of making games no one has seen before was asinine and is biting them in the ass. They didn't have the creative power they believed to have.

Probably for the best. The worst decision for Rare was to be bought by Microsoft.
Nintendo should be the one to have Rare. Look all the good relationship they had in the past? If were up o Nintendo, they would still be releasing bangers to this date.

Hopefully all the talented people will land a nice job at a nicer company that's able to better use their talent.

Might be for the best.

Imagine going through the Kinect mines for years only to be fucked in the ass by all the shit that's going on now. They deserve way better.

Was it that good? Remember hearing stuff about Miyamoto being kinda jelly of their success but it might just be gossip.

But they made I ton worth of games. Most of great titles from N64(and SNES) came from them.
From my point of view, they could be still doing that during all this time. Imagine they still being active on Nintendo side since the Gamecube era?
They could be still be releasing new games for Switch. It maybe just a high shot saying that, but I believe the last thing Nintendo would do is leaving them in the dust by not making games. They would still be releasing titles, wheter is good or not I couldn't tell.

Agree my man. Imo Rare is the main reason that the N64 had so many cool games, it's catalog would be worse than the Saturn's without them.

Would have loved to have them during the GC era and beyond, and while imo it's quite optimistic to think that the quality of their games would have been at the level of their masterpieces (later N64 games like Tooie or Conker weren't as cool as the previous ones imo, and Starfox Adventures was cool but kinda average at times) it would still have been far, far better than what they've done at MS: a bunch of Kinect trash, forgetable sequels trying to ape to nostalgia and whatever the fuck else they've done.

Truly wish them for the best. Not for Rare as a company, but for all the talented people that gave us such gems as Banjo or Perfect Dark. Really, this shit is like seeing you favorite cinema hero from your childhood die to fentanyl.

So Sea of Thieves is next on the chopping block then?'

Microsoft's incompetence is legendary right now, they're doing everything to tweak the numbers and impress the stock owners but don't realize that if key figures leave the studios in anger from these cuts there will be no studios left, all they have left in the end is a studio name and a headless chicken running in circles until it bleeds out.

Sad, but you can see on this very title the downfall of the quality of his work.

I hope it was only MS and their corpo retardation, and that he can just create a new studio and make great games (again?)

What is Rare's role moving forward? I thought Sea of Thieves was a huge success. I get cancelling Everwild but these departures gives the impression Rare is in a really bad state

I never understood why Nintendo didn't buy them.
How many studios has Nintendo purchased that reside in Europe?

NOE was always the "unwanted stepchild" when it came to releasing titles. There were SO many times when NOE flagged a Lot Check issue and NOJ would just waive it...was truly brutal.

Design by committee and every team member's opinion matters is 100% what killed this game by delaying progress and prolonging decision making on every little unimportant detail.

Shame about Rare.
As a PSX kid- they were pretty much the reason i bought an N64 as a 2nd console.
RARE hasn't been "RARE" for years now...but yeah, it still sucks to see such talent being lost.

The true shame is the entire loss of talent and knowledge from all of these teams. So much brain drain and transferable knowledge simply gone...

I never understood why Nintendo didn't buy them.
Nintendo owned 49% of Rare and the Stamper Brothers owned the remaining 51%. Microsoft offered the brothers a lot of money for their share, so they sold it, making Nintendo's share effectively worthless. Nintendo then sold the rest to MS.

Mayles is probably retiring, and Everwild was never going to work out anyway. They had no game to begin with, just a concept. Who ever worked on it can be grateful they had a cushy well paid job doing nothing for years and probably got a nice severance package as well. Out of todays news, this is a nothingburger.

I'm sure some higher up arsehole is right now frothing his hands thinking because everything can be replaced with AI, human resources are disposable and development will be cheaper = more profits

banjo is different than donkey kong. metroid is different compared to perfect dark.

Doesn't matter, both fit the role of the gerne that both games which is a 3D platformer and FPS. Nintendo simply don't see any value in those dead IPs anymore and to spend millions more to buy the rights is a waste.

N64-era Rare was even better than N64-era Nintendo in total. Just a force of nature, really. The right people at the right time in history. Don't understand what went wrong after that and why.
