South of Midnight is one of the weakest Game Pass release on Steam ever with only 1500 players

For comparison's sake, at the moment South of Midnight is behind (in terms of players) Sunset Overdrive (2,326 players), Tell Me Why (2,784 players) and Hellblade II (3,982 players). The company's most popular game is Halo Infinite with 272,586 players.

One of the main reasons South of Midnight hasn't gained so many players on Steam is that the title was released day-one via the Game Pass service. In addition, there was almost no marketing about the game.

Repeating the path of Avowed and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, South of Midnight launched on April 8 to a very positive reception, with 92% of Steam reviews giving it a thumbs up and praising nearly every aspect – from its atmosphere and story to its gameplay and visuals. When it comes to the latter, even within the remaining 8% of reviews, one would struggle to find any negative feedback regarding SoM's graphics, with some negative reviews specifically noting that they have no gripe with and even liked the art style.

I am a racist for not wanting to touch this game with a ten foot pole? Then I guess I'm not the only racist since this game bombed hard. :p

I don't think this should be too surprising as the studio has yet to deliver something that really interested people. Everything they've done is pretty average it seems. I mean, We Happy Few and Contrast weren't really big incredible hits either.

The thing that's different with this one is the amount of people saying it's not as successful because something something "woke" and/or "DEI". 🤷‍♂️ But in reality, it's just another game that didn't entice a lot of people, much like their previous games.

I actually paid for the $9 early access as I was bored on Saturday and figured fuck it (my GP was free from a purchase) and the game is okay. I think the art is outstanding overall but the game is just boring. The gameplay is pretty generic vanilla platforming and light/heavy/dodge combat, and the story was so far not really interesting to me which sucks because folklore wise there is definitely some cool stuff from the South (I'm a certified hater of all things Deep South generally and just find it dreadfully ugly) even if it's not my thing.

That being said I only played through Chapter 3 (11 total I believe) so maybe it gets better. I'm not mad about the $9 but I'll probably uninstall it the next time I turn my Xbox on.

What are the play numbers on GamePass, because I think that is how MS will measure the value. I do not think it is a game that would drive subscriptions though.

I agree 100%.

Compulsion has amazing art, but their games just don't do it for people overall. I was so excited for We Happy few when it was first shown as I thought it was like 60s British Bioshock and that is far from what we got. I still think the style and premise of We Happy Few is top tier.

I think people need to get use to MS putting out gamepass games for gamepass.

It's gonna be more that type of game than your big-budget AAA gears or halo, forza types which will remain a staple but release every 3 or 4 years.

The disnification of gaming was always the end goal and I said as much in all the Actiblizz sales threads.

The idea is just content, as long as you have a constant stream of content then that's all they care about.

The stop motion stuff can be turned off in settings.
Yes but that info is NOT widely known. Most people were turned off by the trailer and just wrote it off in their heads after that.
Game sounds cool though. Getting good reviews. May have legs and slowly ramp up through word of mouth.

They definitely factor into it especially with how much influence big youtubers have where even neutral folks who stumble upon the vid might go "hmmm he has a point now that he mentioned". Usually if a game actually is good and well made than it could balance things out. But this game doesn't really have anything that could win a lot of players over so all the factors just piled up without any good defense for the game to be a decent success. It's similar to the Witcher 3 and Veilguard situaiton where the pervious Dragon Age is a lot more popular and successful than the pervious Witcher game yet Witcher 3 went on to become a huge major success cause nobody talked bad about it on youtube compared to Veilguard which greatly effected it and well designed there too since Veilguard did indeed put nasty shits in.

Because big western fantasy games usually attracts lots of people so Veilguard should have been even more successful and liked than Witcher 3 in a ideal world where they make the game better and without the nasty shits especially in 2025 where there's more players now. With that said I don't know if South of Midnight really is bad or have bad shits in it, so far I haven't seen any at least compared to things like Veilguard and Dustborn but then again I haven't looked too much into the game either.
Yeah, right. I heard that about Hellblade 2, Hi-Fi Rush, Indiana Jones even.

They put trailers on social media/youtube, they discuss the game during their directs, and that's enough marketing usually.
This, I have seen a good amount of news on these games especially South of Midnight even when I wasn't searching for it so they definitely did want it to be known.

At least Sweet baby Inc. got paid regardless of how many copies this game will sell (or not) . But I doubt they'll get many jobs after so many consecutive flops. Their name is toxic and their grift is over.

I gave it an honest chance last night. IMO the game's biggest sin is that it's insanely boring to play. Forced myself to play through the first two chapters, maybe it gets better but I'll never know.

I wonder how much money the game cost to develop. It's just weird putting in so much money in developing a game with such limited appeal.
I'll say AA level of budget around the other AA budget games like Granblue Fantasy Relink, Hellblade 2, Stellar Blade, Wukong, etc and definitely way less successful than any of them besides Hellblade 2 which both underperform massively. Actually it might be too soon to say for South of Midnight cause there's always a chance it could get 100x the numbers on Sunday.

Why would they make a game where the mc has a face only a mother could love ?

Shame the arts look pretty interesting .

They're a consultation studio, as long as they're hired for work, they will stay in business as they've already been paid. Folks keep hiring them, so I don't know about all that.
