Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and seven other former and current government officials are at risk of arrest if they set foot in Spain, after a Spanish judge effectively issued an arrest warrant for the group, it has been reported.

According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, Spanish national court judge Jose de la Mata ordered the police and civil guard to notify him if Mr Netanyahu and the six other individuals enter the country, as their actions could see a case against them regarding the Freedom Flotilla attack of 2010 reopened.

The other men named in the issue are former defence minister Ehud Barak, former foreign minister Avigdor Leiberman, former minister of strategic affairs Moshe Yaalon, former interior minister Eli Yishai, minister without portfolio Benny Begin and vice admiral maron Eliezer, who was in charge of the operation.

I hope they try to pursue a European Arrest Warrant based on this as well. That would add some serious bite to it.

Good. He also ought to be tried for war crimes. A despicable person responsible for so many abhorrent policies.

How does Franco tie into this?

I'm aware of this but even for Europe it seems like Spain is especially critical of Israel.
They remember vividly oppression, more so than any other european country

Edit : you can also add the various independentist mouvements within Spain (catalonia, "le pays basque" and so on) that makes them a lot more understanding of the palestinien plight

Doesn't he have diplomatic immunity since he is currently Prime Minister of a country?

Too bad other countries will give him money to continue his war crimes.
I guess they see his war crimes as just if they give him money though.

Just one thing, earlier this year or the year before the spanish goverment modify the law to only judge international affairs that affect spanish people only. This was pushed because the spanish goverment doesn't want to critize another big countries like China beacuse of the results of a judgment against the chinese invansion of the tibet and their humand rights violation.

The inmediate result was that if a drugs trafficker get arrested and their cargo wasn't mean to get to spain they are spare, because we can't judge them if we catch them in international waters. So, yeah, we have good judges but our goverment is a bad as anyone

An article for more clarification: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/11/w...imits-on-universal-jurisdiction-law.html?_r=0

Not that i'm complaining but it always seems like Spain is especially pro-Palenstine. Any reason why in particular?
In modern history, Spain has always have strong relatioships with Muslim countries, mainly the ones in North Africa near Spain.

Spain had part of Morocco as colonies until 1959, and part of Sahara until 1976.

We have shared history with Muslims. Even if part of that history ended badly, with Muslims exiled from Spain at the beggining of the 17th century, in Spain we are teached in history class about it, and the Muslim part of our history is usually shown in good light.

Also, when Franco's dictatorship had an economic blockade after World War II, a diplomatic policy to strengthen relatioships with Muslim countries was started. That policy continued after the blockade was lifted, and was also continued when the dictatorship ended.
