Mm, I don't think I listen at loud levels and I generally dislike loud music such as like at clubs.
I like the MDR-1As. I did some research and my main goals were to get a comfy pair of over-ear headphones with short cables for Splatoon, but I also didn't just want to get a cheap pair of headphones because I'm used to using better ones. The main alternatives were the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 and Sennheiser Momentum On-Ears 2.0. There's also a lot of other similar range of headphones from lesser known brands but they're even harder to find and test out in person. The reviews mentioned that MDR-1A are fun (which is never really a compliment in the audiophile world) but my other headphones are often too neutral sounding so I find it a nice change of pace. To me it emphasizes the vocals which my other gear doesn't. They are really damn comfy though which is why I chose it over the others.
Unfortunately since it doesn't seem like they'd work for Splatoon I'm probably going to try returning them.
Seems like another alternative is to use component cables just for the audio and get a RCA to headphone jack adapter and do it that way. Although that means I'd need headphones with longer cables instead of shorter ones.
Edit: Another way to describe the volume issue is that I'm hearing equal amounts of the standing fan blowing at me and the game. And I don't want to turn down the fan because it's the summer.
Wow, that is stupid low for closed headphones if you can hear the fan that clearly. =/ Yeah, short of using an RCA to Aux cable or amp, you're not gonna have a lot of luck AFAIK.
Yeah, I wish my headphones were a little more fun to listen to. I like 'em, and I chose 'em because they have a similar sound signature to my Koss UR40s, which I really liked. I'm not sure if I have enough ear training or sources to appreciate HIFI music either, so that's another reason I went with these. Still, it's nice to listen to fun ones when the mood hits. I'm just scared of entering the audiophile or even headphone collection scene. Heh.
Try switching cables with a spare cable you have lying around if it has a detachable cable.
If that's not it then try turning the fan off for a little bit. If that "fixes" it then those headphones have poor isolation. I have a pair of open headphones that I don't use when noisy things are going on and also go to fucking hell Microsoft are you seriously going to restart my computer in 5 minutes for some fucking update oh my god you assholes
I hate Windows 8 just for that. =/
I use my open headphones whether things are noisy or not because I have this strange need to hear what's going on around me.
