I think that white T-shirt on the right is the first piece of gaming-related apparel I've ever seen that I would actually wear in public. It's just a subtle and eye-catching design on its own, and the only folks who would even know it's gaming-related would be Splatoon fans, which would make it kind of a cool and stealthy conversation starter.

This game has such great art direction.

That's actually the plot of Mario Sunshine 2

Yes, or perhaps the inspiration for a post-match bonus mode where Inklings - or why not a new Splatoon minor character like a sponge / starfish - don FLUDD-type devices to grumpily / cheerfully clean the arena's. I'd really like that idea myself and if would allow for a more natural form of Mario Sunshine integration compared to just transporting Mario into the Splatoon world himself (not that I'd mind that either though). Just seeing the great paint fluid effects applied to water and soap foam would imo be a treat on its own.

I was thinking last week how I wish the hub had a larger hub world. Have a giant island as the hub and have the island be influenced by Japan, California, Hawaii and other Pacific beaches. Have the main city in the center of the island be like Tokyo meets San Francisco. You could skate, rollerblade or bike through the city incorporate the ink mechanic to it as well as some sort of trick system. Maybe blasting ink on the side of walls will allow you to skate on them. Have different outlets, battle locations, single player missions, minigames and collectibles scattered throughout the city. Allow you to create your own clothing outlet where you can create and sell your own clothes. Also incorporate some sort of graffiti system with the ink to make some cool graffiti art on buildings.

....I think I just thought up Nintendo's GTA.

This sound quite fantastic actually. Just the bigger hub part inspired by Hawaii, San Francisco and beaches by itself sounds cool enough, but to add skating and free roaming with stunts etc sounds even more exciting.

What a powerful new IP Splatoon is proving to be already, seeing as so many of us are already brimming with ideas for a sequel or for different games set in the same universe. I can only Hope Nintendo will continue to expand upon the Splatoon universe even if this first game doesn't become a mega sales hit.

Sorry for the double post, but did any of you guys (Nate, oti xero) get your amiibo yet? I'm curious about the weapons they unlock (like the custom roller for the inkling boy), if they are just skins or different weapons?

No, still waiting.
Maybe they're sending them after the release of the game so we won't sell them on eBay or something? I don't know.

I asked Nate what he thought of the longevity so far, what is your thoughts on it? If you you can't answer cause are writing a review I understand.

why can't they just cancel the testfire demo and release the game early? that'd double as a stress test, right?

need mah fix

lol, I know how you feel but with the limited content held against the game, it needs to come out at launch swinging with a solid netcode. If it has a Halo/DC launch, it is dead in the water.

Wait. Old Man Squiddicus has THREE tentacles? Or is he actually just a cuddlefish? I've seen him referred to as an inkling more than anything else though.

30h in and all I want to do is play more Splatoon.

So awesome to hear and I am sure you still have stuff to unlock, then more maps, modes, gear features coming throughout summer.

Store pick up at BB early in the morning.

Sweet, thank you! I'm interested to see what people think of it, although I guess we won't get a good picture until after everyone gets it, yeah?

If you go by miiverse community that the reviews are using, they love the game but lack of content will hit Splatoon hard no matter how much fun it is.

The original email I got said amiibo would be sent "in the next few days" but that was a week ago and still nothing. I just hope they come before the embargo lift.

they must want reviewers to have a consumer-like experience with amiibo

It's both good and bad really. I don't need the amiibo for the review, they're not included anyway. But many people want to know whether the missions are worth to get them and fear the amiibo will be sold out shortly after release.

But it's Nintendo. They could arrive tomorrow or on launch day.

Yeah, I'd like to include some info about the amiibo challenges, and since they mentioned video restrictions on the challenges, I assume we'll get them prior to the embargo. I figure they'll arrive along with the retail copy of the game, so maybe late this week.

I'm getting more excited by the minute, haven't felt like this in a long while. So glad impressions thus far are positive; Testfire was a blast, despite no customizing at all and only two maps available.

Have we heard anything about max level in the game?

I think it is 20.

If I were to host a live-stream this week, would people be interested? I can do a SP/MP mix like GameXplain did or just focus on one. Let me know, folks.

I would love to watch MP footage. I had to skip past the SP stuff on GameXplain's video because I don't want any further spoilers on it.

Quick question.

Is there team deathmatch?

No. it's a game about inking surfaces, not shooting people.

Turf War - team with most ground covered wins

Splat Zones - control a fixed zone on a map with ink for the longest time

Tower Control (free post-launch update) - A tower moves on a set path through the level if someone stands on it, reach goal & win

Rainmaker (free post-launch update) - no details yet

^those are all your online modes. If you're expecting a deathmatch mode to be added in the future, expect to be disappointed.

All the modes they've announced so far. There could be more. For now it's a 'no', but it's certainly within the realm of possibility.

We want more mp action I believe

Not aware of very many who want more single player because, like, spoilers.

Someone on Squidboards has made an easy to use list of gear shown in pre-release footage, contains info like price, amount of stars, its main ability, and etc.

Headgear: http://squidboards.com/guides/all-hats-headgear-pre-release-version.16/
Clothing: http://squidboards.com/guides/all-clothing-pre-release-version.12/
Shoes: http://squidboards.com/guides/all-shoes-pre-release-version.13/

I made a thread on Squidboards summarizing how I think abilities will work for whoever is interested: http://squidboards.com/threads/theory-on-how-gear-abilities-work.996/

And I updated the album of weapon stats by adding 6 more weapons (22 in total): http://imgur.com/a/5xGWN

I would definitely watch and my preference would be MP only. The only requirement is that your inkling is fashionable. :p
Thanks, this is nicely made.

No, and they haven't announced any plans to add the mode. Maybe they will in the future.

Only announced modes for future updates are this mode called Tower Control(name?) and Rainmaker.

I am highly doubtful that they'd be adding a mode as boring as (team) deathmatch to a game with mechanics this cool and already more interesting modes. if people just wanna splat each other they can do that while painting the floor in Turf War.

Splat Zones could satisfy the need for killing, as well. Since you need to control the zone, killing opponents is beneficial.

Ah yea right. That one has a stronger focus on taking out other players, too. Next to not seeing the need for TDM/DM, I also don't feel they'd wanna "promote" that kind of play when they have this unique alternative that is the actual foundation of how this game works.

No, but it may come in future updates. We know of a Tower mode coming and something called 'make it rain'.

I'd imagine death match will be an option with the August update.

Also 10 DAYS!

I could see them coming up with an interesting take on that. Something along the line of ink enough turf with as many enemy splatter as possible.

Ha, oh yeah, I guarantee LOTS of people will farm kills in Splat Zones. Not just because in that mode it should help the team, but because many people will want to kill for the sake of it, and doing that in Turf War doesn't necessarily help massively.

Nate, I've asked this before (you weren't sure at the time), but maybe having had more time with the game you know this now... Has anyone figured out how joining friends works yet?

1. Spectate until a spot opens up? (the way MK8 works now)
2. Sit on a "please wait" type screen until a spot opens up?
3. Get an error message stating that the lobby is full, making it necessary to relentlessly spam "join" to try to get into their lobby? (the way MK8 worked after the first major update and spectating was broken)
4. Something else?

With how traversal works in this game (faster on your own ink in squid mode, slower on opponent's ink) I am kind of surprised there's not a capture the flag mode. Imagine the possibilities.

IMAGINE.

Maybe Rainmaker is an asymmetrical mode... 7 squids trying to ink up the whole place and 1 player with a 'rainmaker' washing it all away. Like a 'Mario Sunshine' mode.

The tower control mode seems like a pseudo capture the flag mode, in a manner of speaking.

But you're right. A "true" capture the flag mode could be very interesting. Especially if the player carrying the flag is unable to spray ink. Massive teamwork needed.
