Just look at this. Of course they'll patch in a third arena eventually.

That doesn't even need to be patched. Since the choices of maps are provided from the server side, the game might already be prepared to handle when the server sends out 3 map choices instead of 2.

Awesome footage of the skate park, but seriously guys, stop aiming directly to the floor when you wanna splat in front of you! Just aim straight!

I assumed that 1 equippable ability per gear was how it was going to work as well. That said considering that the abilities you unlock are randomized it seems like there's a good chance that you can get repeats of the same ability per gear and I don't think they stack. You can't change the abilities without straight up shuffling all of the gear's abilities so there's a lot of risk/reward/experimentation going on with it.

I think this as well. Also, you can notice that under the Superweapon icon you can see 3 abilities displayed. They probably represent the select abilitie from each gear.

If perks end up being a big deal, unfortunately one will need to care about them if they want to win :/

That's the reason there's multiple abilities on gear, likely only 1 on each piece of gear counts. You can reroll and select between the non-random abilities so you don't have to be stuck with something unfashionable. Someone should confirm, but this definitely looks like the case as it shows your 3 abilities on screen ingame.

Seeing all of this Turf War gameplay on these maps is just making me think Turf War is gonna be more balanced in Saltspray Rig and Blackbelly Skatepark.

Every other map devolves available at launch devolves into choke points. The team that controls the choke points can easily dominate the match with very little chance of the other team evening it out cause those 3 maps (Walleye Warehouse, Arowana Mall, and Urchin Underpass) have limited routes to get to the choke points so you know which way they come every time. There is very little incentive to go beyond the main choke point on the opposing team's half of the map if you are controlling it, so all you have to do is defend it. There is little chance the opposing team will claim it back against a team that knows this. Walleye Warehouse is particularly noteworthy because of how easy it is to spawn trap.

Now Blackbelly Skatepark is the most open map we've seen so far and doesn't really seem to have narrow paths that turn into choke points. I think it will be hard to dominate because of its open nature allowing for multiple paths.

I think Splatspray Rig is going to be the most balanced map for Turf War. It provides safe routes to get back to the action and no way to actually push people back into the spawn. You really have to work to hold on to the main areas.

These are just thoughts I had seeing the gameplay (in a post-testfire world lol). Who knows how it would play out with two teams that are equal or nearly equal in terms of skill.
Let me find one of the screenshots that show three stages there because those are a thing.

For just $5* I'll post juicy screenshots of the SUPER SECRET Splatoon Review Miiverse community.

I don't know, Saltspray Rig is all about one chokepoint. Whoever hold the area behind it wins the match, and it's only accessible from one direction (and superjumps)

Thanks.

It isn't really easy to keep that back area cause there is only one way to get there. You would need a lot of people there if you want to keep it and at that point, people can just cover the other areas. And just because you have that back area, you aren't guaranteed the win. I remember seeing a video of a team doing just that from the testfire.
Zero Jr., is that you?
I don't know how one can say map x or map y is the most balanced before actually playing in all of them
There's a reason why I said I think. It's just speculation and is supposed to encourage people to post their thoughts and discuss about it. And the opening part of my posts out right says after watching gameplay.

The abilities/perks thing is a bit confusing for me, but if it is as you are saying, then that is better. As long as I can make my squid look the way I want, I will be happy.
Nice!

Can you tell if the same equipment abilities stack? Like multiple attack buffs give an even bigger boost?

I think it would be easier to test that with any of the following abilities:

Special Saver: Charge gauge loss for dying/falling is even smaller
Special Duration Up: Special attack duration is even longer
Quick Respawn: Respawn is even faster
Run Speed Up: Increases run speed even more
Swim Speed Up: Increases swim speed even more

A simple comparison video would tell.

The same problem can be found in Mario Kart 8. Just terrible.

I know right?!?! first thing I noticed about Mario Kart 8 after coming off of Tropical Freeze where I turned the effects down to 40 lol

If you truelly just want to hear the music there are ways of achieving that. >.>

see, I still want to hear the sound effects and stuff. I just want them lowered significantly in the case of Mario Kart 8 and probably Splatoon.

@NateDrake / oti xero: do you take part in Nintendo's Creators Program?

Josh Thomas/TheBitBlock claims he did not receive his Splatoon review code because he refused to take part in the NCP.

EDIT: The Best Buy Splatoon Google Hangout starts NOW!

I do not take part in the NCP.

I'm slightly confused that he says Nintendo PR removed the site from their list, but has a retail copy of Puzzle & Dragons for 3DS, which arrived yesterday for most outlets. Maybe a store broke street date or something?

Is there a volume control at ALL? In the demo there was no volume option, and even if I cranked my monitor down to the lowest possible volume setting without muting, the Splatoon sound/music was still too loud on headphones sometimes.

I don't understand it being the only way to play just because it's objectively the best way to play. Second player is forced to use a "lesser" control scheme, so what's wrong with first player using it because they actually want to.

Nothing wrong with options. If someone wants the option to be "worse off" than everyone else in multiplayer then that's their choice.

The map would actually be easier to use if you had it in front of you or next to you. Having it on a stand and just tapping a teammates name to jump to them should work just fine.

I'll personally be using gyro myself though, feel good man.
You're choosing for your teammates to be "worse off" if you go pro controller in multiplayer. Those seconds it would take just to launch from spawn could cost you the game. Let alone seeing everything at once and being able to almost instantly react to it. You're gimping your team, not just yourself.

From the Best Buy stream:

One person from Nintendo called the abilities on the second line “sub-abilities”, implying they can be active at the same time as the main ability.

New content will be made available “every week or so”.

regarding the whole "do perks stack?" question, someone on gamefaqs (heh) said that the game manual in the demo makes the distinction between primary and secondary abilities, with secondary abilities having weaker effects
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/805617-splatoon/71793759?page=2
is it still possible to check this?

I'll check the game menu tonight. I just unlocked some secondary abilities on my clothing, so it'll be worthwhile for me to investigate their impact on my Inkling's performance.
