also if you see a guy they're not gonna leave you alone so you shouldn't leave them alone because else you gonna get splatted

basically attacking them is defending yourself.

just... prematurely.

I want to add this before it gets lost in the shuffle, but I noticed something interesting about range in both the Testfire and the subsequent youtube coverage.

All weapons and subweapons have hard range caps. Physically, this makes sense; shooting near straight should give you the most x vs. y axis range, while shooting upward converts a lot of that x range into y range. It doesn't quite feel right, because it doesn't feel like 45 degrees is the best angle to shoot at, but once you get used to it you can plan for it.

This means that all bombs can't go beyond a certain range and that certain weapons have really strong advantages once they can outrange your weapon.

Yea you can get a bit of extra range by jumping while shooting.

I think many here are understating the importance of confrontation in this game. I agree that ultimate objection is to not go for kills and running around painting stuff can be beneficial, the winning strategy involved painting over the "hot zones" which are going to be either the middle part in more linear maps or hills like Saltspray Rig. Seeing this area is the one that is going to be contested all match, you need to do your best to paint it and defend it. That's the +50% that you need, and you can't just leave it in order to paint smaller areas while you let you enemy paint over it. Winning confrontations gets you dominance of the area and then you need to advance until other choke points, some may prefer to defend like that by sneaking around or by staying right in front of them. If everybody ran around without ever running into each other the game would virtually be a tie.

Great footage, but perfect example of why Nintendo decided to axe voice communication. I only hope they'll bring it in August with friends games but it's never ever getting in on pubs.

Killing is well and fine and yes it has an effect on winning but many times I saw an enemy exit a huge area that they painted and instead of chasing him down and maybe die from him or run into one of his buddies I just repainted what he just painted.

of course it's good, it's a sniper aka the most annoying weapon in any shooter aka my preferred weapon choice

I like the waiting till you shoot for the sniper yet you can spam if someone is near and still get a kill. No quick scopes here, so it wouldn't be that bad.

That's the cool thing about it. Multiple playstyles supported. You like confrontation? Chase after them squids! You don't like confrontation? Paint paint paint paint.

Took a while, but I'm now done with this.

I did not see Stealth Jump in any of the videos that had gear in a format I could get in pics like these. It's interesting how utility abilities seem to be somewhat rare.
I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but here is a video of some person dominating with the splat charger. The 'splat charger sucks' people need to learn how to use it I guess

Not to discredit the guy, but this is from the Testfire. He does have good aim though.

Also, the guy is doing "commentary", he wouldn't say that if that was voice chat. At least I think he won't.

No, once you buy it the main ability stays there forever. What can happen is that tomorrow the exact clothe can have a different ability and you can buy it as well, as have both of them forever and change at your leisure

Secondary abilities also stay, bu I think you can reroll them if you want on level ups

That strategy can be countered. The downside to holding choke points is if one person busts through the line, the whole rest of the team can super jump behind you. Also you're not building up specials when you're not inking new territory and several of those are powerful enough to wipe out your team with a well-timed push.

I forgot where I heard the every day thing, but what you quoted in the video just refers to that you can't determine what the secondary abilities are when you buy the item... I think.

The NintendoLife video said that, and it seems he was wrong.

The video I just posted is saying the only ability out of the 4 abilities you can have that is not random on a gear is the first one, which is the main ability.

Like I've seen dozens of the different people with the same gear with the same main ability.

Once you own a piece of gear, you can't buy it again.

that's what I meant, yeah. You can re-buy the same gear with different primary abilities on different days
at least that's what the guy said in this video https://youtu.be/_VkkZzyMN0s (2:18)
e: well apparently that might not be correct

How much gear can you buy and keep? Is there a limit in your closet? I can't imagine you buying and buying forever.

It's still the main strategy of the game, I feel. Area control. The Super Weapons work as a bit of a comeback mechanic and it means that you can only afford 2 people to defend the major hotzone unless it's under extra pressure, 1 person inks whatever may be the secondary hotzone, and then rest ink flanks.

Well, the dance between attack and defense will be the fun in this game.

Here's something I'm curious about - can we actually name our characters in Splatloon? In the testfire demo, it automatically applied your Mii name - but I'm a dude and will be playing as a girl inkling because I like the design way more. It would be lame if my female character would still have to use my male Mii name in every single match.

You could always temporarily rename your Mii.

I wonder if there's a charger with ink strike as a special weapon, makes more sense that the grenades special for long range specialists. The seeker is also quite interesting

That's a pretty cool little maneuver there. What does the "+73" mean in that gif? I've sen videos where both teams have a +number at the same time and can't figure out what it stands for.

When you've had control for a while, and then the other team gains control (not gets the zone neutral, but completely gets control) then the team that lost control gets a +second counter that they have to burn through before they can go back to burning through regular time to win the match. Comeback mechanic. Right now it feels like about 3/4s of the time you've held it for.

In Splat Zones, if a team loses control over an area, they receive additional "penalty time" that they will chip away at the next time they regain control. The amount of time added seems to depend on how big the difference in the team's main counters is at the time it's applied, but I'm not sure if anyone has the exact numbers figured out for how it works.
edit: ^ Yes what Proven said.

Everything does that. That's why your Display Name is your Display Name.
Gone are the glory days of 'Player 1', 'Player 2', etc default names.

You can see the Gamepad here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxGqrbN9xG4

The thing that caught my attention is this part right here:
yVXfnEN.png

The ordering is kinda goes well with the abilities:
Possible secondary abilities (13):
Ink Saver (Main)
Ink Saver (Sub)
Defense Up
Swim Speed Up
Damage Up
Special Duration Up
Special Charge Up
Quick Super Jump
Special Saver
Ink Recovery Up
Run Speed Up
Bomb Range Up
Quick Respawn

Non-secondary abilities (11):
Ninja Squid
Stealth Jump
Ink Resistance Up
Tenacity
Opening Gambit
Last-Ditch Effort
Recon
Cold-Blooded
Haunt
Bomb Sniffer
Comeback
Also, kinda confused how Color Lock works. Nothing appeared on the Gamepad outside of a On/Off toggle. Do you get locked in to the last color you played as?

Gamexplain's video said it just locks the last color. Since it's mainly an accessibility feature I guess they didn't put a lot of work into it, at least it's there.

It's our favorite hopping guy from AlwaysNintendo with Splat Zones footage on Saltspray Rig using the Aerospray RG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJcXMj2NY-M

Unfortunately it is cut short and the results aren't known.

He jumped over the Seeker lol.

This game brings out weird thoughts in my head. Watching this gif all I could think of was how cool the color schemes are when 2 teams go against one another.

On another note, can't wait for the first Splatoon highlight video that uses Green & Purple as the BGM. :lol
