One crazy thing I noticed within the ask Iwata article .. was this game has only been in development for like 10 months.. That is a really short amount of time to make a game this polished...

They said it was only 10% complete at the time they demoed and had it playable at E3 lol.. Literally only had 1 loadout and map ... Which would explain the lack of maps in multiplayer and the stringing along of the free DLC.

It said that in november 2013 they were about 3 months into development. I don't know if it means that was the point when they said "ok, we're making a game" or if that is the point where they had already decided on the main concept and got a team and a budget, but we're talking at least 20 months of development (which isn't a lot by today's standards, I reckon, but it's a fair amount of time).

More like 2 years.

You have to take into account the 6 months of brainstorming (discussing 70+ gaming ideas), and the 3-6 months before they solved the issue with character/walls/transformation/etc. The gameplay mechanics was finally "solved" early 2014, but the period before that was when the Splatoon game actually was "created".

That's probably why they're going to add content little by little since they didn't had a lo of time to make more contents. I mean it has just been one year since then and many companies including Nintendo would've not realeased (usually) a game in that short spam of time (for multiple reasons)

Yes I agree, since last E3 they've expanded on what they created with the first playable build.

They have most of the stuff already made. The thing they're probably still working on is balancing those maps and additional modes.

Don't remember if this has been covered yet: Can the D-pad messages during battle be customized? If so, how many possibilities are available?

Funny how a game like Splatoon was developed on it's majority during a less than a year lapse but other Nintendo games such as Yoshi's Wolly World are taking more than 2 years almost three to release... I guess EAD is just truly a super efficient team they can pull out quality games in a relatively short period of time. Just look at Super Mario 3D World for example. Made in less than 2 years without delays. It actually released earlier than it was originally planned and look how freaking amazing that game is. Dem EAD Wizards. I'm literally scared of excitement to know about their upcoming big games... like ZELDA.

Well, context matters, though. EAD has the benefit of being EAD in that they can rope in people from their big pool of EAD staff to prioritize a game. Splatoon is still a fairly simple game, too. Most of the finesse comes from balancing and tuning controls. Plus they're getting support from MonolithSoft Kyoto for asset creation.

Yoshi's WW for example is done by an outside studio which can't really pull more people out of thin air. Zelda is a hugely complex and gigantic project.

Wait I thought you could customize in single?

I'm rewatching the Splatoon Direct right now.

In singleplayer you can collect Power Eggs. Those are used to upgrade the stats of your "Hero Suit" which is just your regular outfit designed to look like a firefly squid

Inside SP levels, you can find gear/items (like special weapons or subweapons or protective gear) but those are only active within the level you found them in.

That generic armor gives you a defense bonus for the rest of the level.

All the actual outfit customization is solely for the online where people would actually see it.

Ah thanks for clearing that up for me. I was quite confused as you can see lol

No problem.

Basically the items and gear works like power ups in the Super Mario Galaxy series. You find them in the level and use them there. That's all there is to it. :)

I would assume the amiibo gear is unlocked in waves (shoes, headgear, torso, etc) and once you complete them all you have the full outfit. Then you run around wearing that stuff in Turf War, etc, where people can then go "whoa where did they get that cool suit!" and drop some $$$ in teh amiibo bank. :D

Sweet. Yeah I'm gonna see if I can get the three pack next Friday. Are we gonna have a sign up sheet to swap wiiu ids?

Really wish if there were a LE with the Amiibos and game in the states sometimes just because I don't want to become a full time restock watcher but actually really like the Splatoon amiibos.

On another note, the music in this game is so good.

The Splatoon amiibo look really well fabricated. They seem of a better quality than the normal ones. Splatoon amiibo and woolly Yoshi are for me the best in terms of looks until now.

The dev team really took control of every facet of this game. I heard one of the designers actually designed the amiibo.

Nogami
Inoue-san was the general supervisor for amiibo.

Inoue
The designer that we asked to model the form to make these amiibo did such a great job. The poses look good from no matter what angle you look at them. Only it was hard to get the ink right with the squid figure, so I did the modeling myself.

i wanna know.. if you reviewers have come across, anywhere in the game, of that pixelated 2D gameplay footage of an inkling shooting squids seen in the original single player trailer.

...it was thought it was going to be in the arcade machine but it seems like not...

or is it a part of the dark ending to the single player mode?

Went to the Splatoon event in Hamburg. It was for press and for "super fans" with invitation. Nintendo organised a competition for the press. I won. I'm great.
