[SPOILER THREAD] Suicide Squad

The film was a mess when it really didn't need to be. The film could have used a couple of those scenes that were cut, but I don't think it would have helped with the pacing or the overall plot. The worst part for me was the editing. Terrible, terrible editing.

I liked Deadshot, Quinn, El Dialbo, and Waller, but the rest were pretty inconsequential. Enchantress was pretty lame, Flag and Katana were boring, and Boomerang didn't even need to be in the movie.

The soundtrack was used way too much. Everyone basically had their own music video at the start of the film.

And it just ended with a whimper. I pretty much left feeling nothing for it.

Edit: Didn't even realize I posted in the spoiler thread, thought I was in the review thread.

I was left dumbstuck at the El Diablo power up. That shit was weird as hell.

can someone confirm that this shot is straight up in the movie?

someone posted the video clip of it in this thread yesterday

LOL YEAH THE EL DIABLO TRANSFORMATION

wtf, no hinting towards that whatsoever

his character is such a waste.

The dynamic of him being reformed but encouraged to be bad is a good opportunity for some interesting dynamics between him and others. But it goes nowhere.

This film is clearly a patchwork of different ideas and approaches.

It seemed like he knew he could do it, but that was only implied by a line of dialogue he says referring to the source of his powers about 30 seconds before it happens.

I'm guessing cut dialogue or footage shows that the last time he took that form he killed his family

his character is such a waste.

There's really a lot of potential there, which sadly got wasted a bit

I FIGHT FOR MY FRIENDS

I WON'T LOSE MY FAMILY AGAIN

Along with the fact that the whole backstory with his family seemed like it came up awfully late in the film.

But I found the whole theatrical cut of the bar scene to be weird in that regard since it suddenly seemed like a total tonal shift. I mean, I liked it, but I felt I was watching a version of the scene from a much more serious cut of the film, rather than the version the trailers were showcasing. The character dynamics and development in that scene seemed very distant from the scenes in front of it.

tbh my favorite part of the film was that bar scene because it did a pretty good job in showing just how fucked up they all are, something I felt it shied away from too much

Also 'you're a serial killer who takes credit cards' is a fucking INCREDIBLE line

Film needed more of that. From the sounds of things, they filmed and cut those scenes that showed undesirable aspects of the characters.

What sucks most about not having any weight behind Diablo's change is the fact that I thought his design was pretty fucking awesome. If he was written and paced right, that transformation could have been so bad ass.

Bar scenes was the best dialogue and character development in the movie

Just saw it and like I expected it was a mess of editing and story.

I liked Deadshot and Harley because they are the two characters who get a semblance of dialogue and character building (and to a smaller extent diablo in the bar scene) so you can identify with them. The rest of the movie was a music video.

When we were working on the villain I was asking "is there more to this guy? What is his motivation? so far he is just some guy who shoots tentacles and nothing else" and yea that was pretty much it. I guess that's all you get when you have six weeks to write a script. It makes me sad because there was good potential in the characters if they spent some time building their character.

Katana and Joker were absolute trash. I really HATED Leto's joker. Katana served no purpose whatsoever. Ropeguy was also a joke.

If they make a sequel I hope they spend more time on the script and do some character building.

Posting from the review thread as it is easier to talk here.

Just got back and really liked the style of the movie but it seemed like a bit of a mess. Oh, and the crocodile guy was jar jar binks level of horrible/racist on my opinion.

That said I loved Jared Leto's joker, Will Smith's character (though I can't remember his name) and Harley Quinn. Every other member of the SS seemed to be varying degrees of silly and/or useless. The climbing guy was pointless and the walking Asian stereotype didn't seem to have any purpose either. Outside of the batman universe and Will Smith being Will Smith, the rest of the DC characters just seemed to be downright boring.

Overall it seemed like they were trying to make an Avengers movie with characters that just don't work in that "us against a massive weave of enemies" setting.

Outside of all the obvious issues, it was one of the most poorly edited movies I've seen in some time. It's like three different people were taking turns to edit it, without any notes or clue about the plot, all while being kinda drunk.

It just didn't flow well at all. If that reddit thing is true, opening the film with Moon's introduction would have made so much more sense.

Can anyone confirm me that the guy at the bar the Joker killed isn't the Tattooed Man? Hopefully not because he's a cool villain that could be used in the future.

I think cutting the abusive Joker stuff was probably a smart move if they were always planning on an ending where Harley stays with him. I can only imagine the thinkpieces.

I'm sure that would've happened. At the same time, Harley deciding to stay and help the Squad over leaving with the Joker is a strong moment for her character. After that, having Joker return to save her in the end, could be taken as her having power over the Joker.

Why did nothing ever happen to the prick prison guard from the Mindy Project? Seemed like they were setting him for something bad to happen to him, but I don't recall anything happening.

its almost like shes batshit insane and thats why she would still like him or something

I went in with lowered expectations after all the reviews it was receiving. I liked it only for the fact that we got a brief Flash and Batman cameo. The movie as a whole isn't bad but a mediocre summer movie.

Waller is a legit badass and I can't wait to see her interact more with the JLA. Her convo with Bruce was interesting. I want more Deadshot. A solo film should be fun. Enchantress had some decent effects and was almost too strong for the Squad until she jobbed at the end there :/ Harley was good and I enjoyed most of her scenes (and because Margot is beautiful :P). Diablo had the second dumbest transformation moral and character-wise but his actual demon form was fucking wicked. Croc was literally there for being a brick and to swim. Boomerang had the dumbest transformation ahead of Diablo. Dude kept on mentioning leaving and leaves..... To only come back out of the screen -_- Katana.... I don't have too much of an opinion of her but they really exaggerated her lines, eash. Flag, no opinion.

I think that's everybody..... Oh wait I forgot the MVP - Slipknot. Dude made the movie better!!!!!

Why on sweet god earth would you cut those things out?

Look im a huge DC guy, but Im not sure the movie studio knows what they are doing.
I read through the cut scenes and most of them can be narrowed down to these things:

*Were superfluous so cut down to decrease length.
*Pushed the rating limits.
*A lot of cuts related to Joker/Harley relationship which was originally abusive in nature.
*Cut down on the rascism/sexism. Apparently Boomerang was pretty rascist/sexist to Katana before having an affinity for her.
*Cut down on stuff that made the characters look even more like degenerates (like Slipknot was a serial rapist)

The worst thing is that some of the best lines/shots from the trailers weren't even in the movie.

If these scenes had been left in place, there is no way this movie would have survived. This paints the joker as the abusive man he is, and people unfamiliar with the HQ/Joker dynamic would have destroyed the movie upon release.

I still want this version for myself, but it's not something the public can watch. You'll get another BvS situation, only this time it's worse, because it can be applied to real life issues.

I think that cut of SS would've been fine if the movie was R rated but LOL if WB was gonna release an R rated movie. Especially if the rumors about its budget are true.

Almost guaranteed we are going to get a 2 and a half hour ultimate cut for this. I really hope we get the rumored alternative cut rather than just more scenes added in. I want to see the movie with Eminem's "Guess who's back" song blaring as Harley is putting on her shirt.

Because it wasn't on the news. The government was covering it up and everyone in the city had turned into mooks so no one was around to tell people.

So does the internet not exist in this world? In the real world there would be a video of that thing in the sky online real quick.

it got cut

Wow, I can see why they'd get rid of some Joker stuff to sway the perception from abusive to something else, but this really hurt the film

Is Waller going to be in JLA? Also, the Joker cell phone video threat was great.

The MPAA needs to revisit their rules on coarse language because this movie was dropping bitch/shit/pussy every 5 minutes.

This is easily the hardest PG13 movie in a while, more so than even BVS. People getting shot on the regular and other generally nasty stuff.

Ok, the way you describe it, makes it more acceptable, and maybe for the better.

There's something that has been bothering me. Am I not a real person for not liking this movie? Am I a fake? An artificial being? Who am I? What am I?

I don't know but I hope she is. She was a good nuisance in the animated series lol.

I knew I forgot somebody and that was Joker. I'm glad he was used minimally. This was Suicide Squad not Suicide Squad and Joker. I'm still adjusting to Leto's version of the Joker but initial impressions are.... He's decent.
