Chihaya keeps her obsessive Karuta practice going.
It turns out that
there is another tournament coming in a short time, but the Karuta Club advisor forbids her from going, saying her studies are suffering and she is a really shitty student. She is assigned to tutoring with desktomu while Taichi goes to the tournament alone.
Naturally, this wont work because
Chihaya is stubborn as fuck. so she sneaks out to go cheer on Taichi. When she arrives, she notices ARATA. Yes That Arata. Remember him? anyway, Arata is playing
LIKE A BOSS
despite not playing competitive Karuta for years. He advances fairly high but both he and Taichi are bounced from the competition. Arata goes all
SHONEN HAAATO!!!
and Chihaya is in deep shit for skipping out on tutoring, but this show is too lenient to really get her for it.
also,
Taichi decides that he isn't so much trying to get to Class A as he is trying not to run away like a coward.
Cut to Chihaya studying.

To be honest, I genuinely liked Panty & Stocking more than Usagi drop, Penguin drum, Wandering son etc. So yeah, no trolling here!

Space Bros is less than two days away.

On the other hand, Private Dick-ons is still more than 3 weeks away.

KyoAni has come back to from their K-On pilgrimage to come and save anime yet again. You should all be grateful.
I have a really good feeling about Hyouka - I mean K-ON level production values + A Non-4koma adaptation. What could possibly go wrong? :)

I wonder if Kyoani still have that light novel magic touch left. After 3 koma adaptations of K-on, K-on!! and Nichjou, it's been a longass while.

Well the source material could be totally awful. But it does look like it will be very pretty, at least.

Its kind of a weird adaptation for them because the title is basically something random pulled from 10 years ago. I have a feeling they had something very specific in mind when deciding to adapt it and it could turn out great.

If Yoshida is adapting, it'll be great.

Doesn't matter - the source material for K-ON!/K-ON!! was bad too!

You're right, but it seems like this actually has some kind of story.

I'd guess so.

Also, it should have a great soundtrack with Kouhei Tanaka composing.

Bodacious Space Pirates 12 - I guess I didn't review this already? Huh. A solid ending to the story, this episode was great. The conclusion to the arc worked well, and the solution was amusing and surprising too. Marika sure does think ahead, she's a good captain indeed! The tension in this episode, as they slowly travel through the ship, builds well, and the ship is as interesting on the inside as it is on the outside, too. And then, at last, there's the final confrontation with the other princess's forces... and the unexpected happens!

She planned to knock out both princesses and divert their fight from turning violent from before they even landed on the ship... impressive. Also, I liked how she said how the princess hadn't technically told her what she wanted to do on the ship, so she wasn't actually breaking her orders, which was true... :)

Also, it was nice to see the reason behind why they wanted to find this ship. And it was an important one, too...
Apparently the generation tank in the ship had been used to make the royal family members, but it's out of power or DNA or something now, so this one new baby is the last one from the tank... they'll have to do something else in the future. Also, given that they'd been using this, I assume that the answer to "why could it go into warp" was that at some point they must have added a warp engine, I'd think.I mean, if they were accessing it regularly, it WOULD make sense.

So yeah, great episode as always. The characters are so likeable and the whole cast of pirates are a good team, and the visuals and music of the show are fantastic as well.

So yeah, I posted this before (with ep. 11), but I want to again.

As for the below, it's a bunch of stuff mostly from the old thread I hadn't replied to before.

Do all japanese space dramas refer space stuff like its the ocean? I recall it being like that in infinite space as well.

Anyhow, fun eps! I do kinda wish/hope this series goes looooonnnng. [/quote]
Ah... yes, space as an ocean of stars is a pretty old comparison. It's not a Japanese thing, it's fairly universal -- note how in most sci-fi series the spaceship forces are called a "navy", that's because of that same comparison.

Only One Bodacious Space Pirate Here 10:

Can we change protagonists? I want to watch the adventures of the Bodacious Space Pirate Chiaki! :3 Seriously that whole bit was awesome. Actually this was the best episode of the show in my opinion in that it combined the normal thoughtful approach of it's prior episodes with some actual action to go with it! :D Marika was actually pretty awesome in this episode too, but the show really belongs to Chiaki! :3 :3 :3 :3
Chiaki's cool, but better than the whole main cast, really?

That is awesome.

It gets a little more serious and they focus on girls one-by-one (with some much more "serious" moments), but it's kinda presented not as much as the hijinks portion of the show, and feels pretty sidelined in the grand scheme of things. It was still ok for me at any rate.

Because of the direction in the first season, i'm actually a little more interested in seeing how the announced sequel is going to flow because it's a different studio.
Huh, Seitokai no Ichizon gets serious? More serious doesn't mean better, though... and the problems I've complained about with that show are so deep that I highly doubt that'd help.

Fantastic ending for this arc. You CAN have politics in space operas without involving wars!

Only question.... wasn't the ghost ship a ship in an era where there wasn't FTL speeds? How did it enter and exit warp this and last eps o_O? Did I miss something?
See my theory for that last point in my review above, but as for the rest, yes, this episode is indeed a good case of space opera politics without war that is also compelling and interesting, absolutely. :)

I thought what was shown was pretty nice and sci fy especially with the minor details of the air quality etc. I was only disappointed that there was no treasure and ultimately no pirating :(
There was no treasure for Marika and the pirates, but the princess got some treasure for sure, a baby sister... that was the treasure they got from the ship.

The Bodaciously Gnarly Pirates from Outer Space 12

A strange show where nothing seems to happen and yet I'm captivated. When they entered the
Golden Ghost Space Sausage
I thought we were going to have a series of exploration episodes. Nope, just gliding through corridors and doors opening. Then bish bash bosh it was over.

I will still watch it next week.
The show often doesn't quite do what you expect, but that's one of the best things about it! It's not just another generic anime, it's its own thing and they put some real thought into the plot and events. Well, there are certainly generic anime elements, as well as the original and more complex elements, so it's really a mix of both, but it's got far more of the latter than most animes have, for sure.

The little details do lead to weird scenes like how they can easily remove their helmets like they were paper bags or something.

It's like if you tripped, your helmets would flop off =/

And the camera does like Space Usagi's bottom.
I assume the helmets have some kind of hidden catch that won't just easily release while you're in space, or a sensor or something, yeah... otherwise it'd be a bit dangerous. :)

Moeretsu Pirates 12

This was another good episode, but I feel like someone forgot to tell me what the whole point of this arc was. Hopefully we'll find out more about Serenity in a future arc.
The point of the arc was explained by the princess and Marika, if you pay attention -- the princess wanted to
destroy the rose globe thing that had created the Serenity royal family (they're born from stored DNA or somesuch, not human birth -- this probably explains why she knows so much at a young age, trained into her?), while her sister was there to stop her, pretty much. Marika figured out how to stop both of them, and the revelation of the one more baby in the thing was an important one too, because it showed the princess what would have happened had she destroyed it... that baby would never have existed.

And Marika wins another blonde loli into her harem. And they claimed there wasn't going to be any romance in this. HA.

There's plenty of romance suggested in the OP at least, if not quite as much in the actual show! But yeah, she does seem to be adding to her group... not sure why both princesses would stay there though. Is there actually a reason?

Nichijou didn't have nearly the production values this has though. at least it didn't seem like it. although there are very well animated parts of nichijou.

I don't know if that is true. Nichijou clearly had a very high animation budget, it was just attempting a very different style.

I guess. I can't tell what has a big budget or not. It all looks similar to me (not stylistically of course).
I'll just leave that kind of thing up to you guys.

... You really can't tell from watching Nichijou that it has a really high animation budget for anime? You don't need to know much, just to see all the parts with lots of animation...

It feels so good to jump onto another slice of life right after ARIA. What's more, this show is completely loaded with :cajun everywhere!

A story about a girl who lost her father at a young age, but is determined to put her sad past behind her and pursue her father's hobby of photography. Fu is a bright yet clumsy girl who is so very genki about taking photos.

The highlight of the first episode is Chihiro, though. Her constant crying every time she thinks Fu is going to feel sad is so hnnnnngh. Combine that with her moe-naming sense for her stuffed animals and I was all smiles throughout this episode :)

Looking forward to meeting the main cast next episode!

I thought a single person did all that Sakuga stuff. It cant be that expensive to do.
I'm so confused about anime budgets and what constitutes high production values. I just quit trying to really figure it out. I guess because it matters absolutely nothing to me in terms of the shows I like or not.

Still loving it. All the little strategies and details. I'm really loving it all.

Chihaya seems to have
passed her exams. She instantly rushes to the Karuta room to start practicing again. what a dedicated girl.
The next tournament
will determine the Eastern division winner. Chihaya notices that the windows and AC are shut and turned off to keep the room silent so that every sound can be audible.
Karuta is serious fucking business.
So she is up against a young child prodigy named Ririka. Ririka
is apparently pretty damned good.
Chihaya manages to defeat Ririka with the help of her sensei communicating to her that Speed is not necessary to win, but Chihaya should use every tool she has to remain competitive.
Then Chihaya runs into the lobby and scarfs down a fuckload of chocolates.
Meanwhile, Arata has won round one in the Western division, while his sensei seems to have lost.
Good stuff. Man I love this shit.

The number of people isn't the only thing to consider. Think of how much TIME it takes to draw all of that animation...
