They'll end the OreImo anime on a cliffhanger and then will make you buy the BDs for ten minute OVAs with endings for each girl in the show.

Everybody wins!

Threads like that Oreimo thread...I absolutely dont deny that there are gross exaggerations about the content of anime on this board. But at the same time, I really think this community isn't doing itself any favors by calling peoples disturbed by this kind of thing "righteous GAF", and posting pics like...that one just to get a reaction out of people.

I mean...is it so out of the realm of possibility that somebody can react to something like this that way? And when some are going to Wikipedia to read the description about Oreimo, or even watching the first two episodes in one instance, and they read about/see the sharing of porn games and such (at least that's what they were saying, including the people familiar with the show)...I'm sorry; being weirded out really isn't an unreasonable reaction. I could certainly do without the pedo accusations, but when there's that many people responding "DAT ass" and other such things, if only to bait people...

...Look, the hyperbole and generalizations are annoying and disheartening. But just think that there may be a point where people may be in too deep to see how this stuff can look to outsiders, and that there are times where these reactions aren't entirely unwarranted. And that many of the behaviors of the people in this community who post in threads like those are not making matters any better.

I broadly agree with your points here. I don't think you're going to get people to change their minds or shift any perceptions by playing up for the crowd, it's jut going to reinforce people's views on the matter.
None of animegaf is serious in that thread.
I don't think anyone was being serious, however, I can only say that because I understand the actual positions of people in this thread. If you haven't interacted with them elsewhere you might assume that they are entirely serious.

A non Kuroneko or Ayase end will make me rage.

I can see the sales now.

Kirino, Kuroneko and Ayase will be at the top.

Saori will be mid-tier with Kanako.

Manami will be at the bottom where she belongs.

Not surprising considering the TV series had something like twice as much running time available than the entire trilogy..

Beyond that flaw, I think the movies are watchable even with the incredibly ugly 3D CG. The manga is still the best version of the story though.

I disagree. The anime adapts the best arc in the manga and I prefer the delivery of the story in the anime compared to the manga.

You're just lucky none of us will be alive when the manga ends to qualify this comparison!

I haven't seen the entire anime but I'm assuming you're referring to toning down the rape and ultra-violence for that particular arc? I guess I'd agree.

I recently rewatched both seasons so I still feel that way coming fresh off it. Sunrise really just can't handle season 2s for some reason within the past decade or so.

They're having trouble with 26 episode shows as well. Just look at the abrupt change in direction during the second half of Tiger & Bunny.
Actually there's a big controversy behind the drastic change in direction: http://gundamnmahq.blogspot.com/2008/08/news-code-geass-r2-not-exactly-as.html

Hmm, thanks for this.
And I'd agree with this, absolutely, but who knows if CorvoSol even wants to tackle that one...especially given the release format/schedule.

I would find it difficult to recommend ongoing Sunrise OVA's to anyone at this point considering their release schedule for both Unicorn and Akito.

The anime is great, but they discard the black dog fight so I can't agree with this.. aside the awesome fight, its have crucial final characterization for Griffith.

They foreshadowing the batman arc right off the bat, still think the 2nd half was great.

I'm always amused by all the venom directed at the show, because it just seems so . . . middlingly bad. It's like saying that the Da Vinci Code is the Mein Kampf of the 21st century.

Firehawk's line about it early on is still the best thing to come out of his rage, though:

I think it's less to do with the quality of the show in comparison to other works and more to do with the fact that it was watched by a pretty large number of people, some of whom hadn't seen that much anime. There's many shows that are objectively (as in, clear production problems) worse than SAO but few that were watched by so many people who then proceeded to argue about it inside the echo chamber of the internet.

I had the time to go through about 30 pages yesterday and I'm still 60 pages behind. :(
Thread is moving too fast...

Okay guys, I leave my next marathon up to you. Will I watch:

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

or

Sora no Woto

or

Crest of the Stars

Whichever choice has the most votes when I wake up tomorrow will be it.

I recommend Crest of the Stars. Both because I like it and because I haven't seen the other two yet.

The more popular a bad/mediocre work is, the more hate is directed at it as a sort of rebellion against the masses.

See: Twilight, Name of the Wind, My Little Pony

Oh yeah, Jexhius, did you ever have the time or get the chance to watch Night on the Galactic Railroad? You mentioned earlier that you were going to try and watch it. I was wondering what you thought of it. Did you wind up falling asleep?

I just think it's ethically reprehensible, production values aside.

It's like, you can make a really expensive, high quality cigarette. But the fact remains, that cigarette is a carcinogen and no matter how it is packaged, it's still ultimately a stick of death.

Having never read or watched a Twilight text, I assume the novel/movie/manga/audible audiobook/broadway show versions of Twilight have adequate production values that are at least acceptable. But the people who find Twilight disgusting aren't disgusted by how it looks or the syntax of Myer's prose. They are offended by its content, especially with regards to its gender politics.

Is Name of the Wind considered bad/mediocre? I thought one of the reasons it was popular and well regarded is because of its prose/writing.

I remember reading Twilight on a lark one day to see what all the complaining was about and thinking to myself it was a victim of its own success. It's not good but the vitriol hurled at it seemed to be excessive.

It's one of those things, like when you read Sword of Truth for the first time (when you were 12) and you thought it was great. But when you look back, you realize it's middling/bad.

(Disclaimer: I have never read Sword of Truth.)

If you have time, and a love of riffing literature, please direct your attention to: http://ronanwills.wordpress.com/201...e-of-the-wind-an-introduction-of-three-parts/

Ronan Wills goes through the book chapter by chapter pointing out its flaws and after reading all the blog entries I realize The Name of the Wind was really mediocre after all.

Just like Ready Player One, whose mediocrity crystallized in my mind right before the finale.

I have that blog bookmarked when you linked it before in some books thread.

Ready Player One was a fun ride, but there were some really stupid facepalming parts in the story.

That's the thing, a lot of people (I mean a LOT of people), get caught up by the "fun ride" and lose most of their critical thinking.

I think that explains why stuff RPO, TNOTW, Twilight (for those who are into that kind of thing) and Dan Brown are as popular as they are.

so much manami hate...

Don't really care much about her interactions or the plot or w/e but her voice hits like the right frequency or some shit that makes me all :cajun.

Must've suck when you reading 500+ page book, like it.. and critics said it sucks and you come to agree.
Its wouldn't hit that hard for anime/other visual medium.

Nothing they'll make from this point on will be Hyouka-tier.

What about another season of Hyouka?

FINE! I'll watch Utena! But there better be 2D cars and they better be sexy!

Utena is definitely the right show for sexy cars. In every way possible.

I just think it's ethically reprehensible, production values aside.

Of course, Twilight also has reprehensible prose. Plenty of people also find it disgusting for that reason.

Isn't that what they are already doing? The last episodes aren't going to be shown on TV I think and instead going to be DVD/BD exclusive.

I must say I'm pretty offended that people would mention Name of the Wind on the same internet as Sword of Truth.
