With some of the conversations about what is and what isn't anime, I wasn't sure. Something like the Final Fantasy movie Advent Children for example, some seem to see it as an anime but others don't. I can include it in the list as it's not really that big of a deal to me in the end.

Is it animation? Yes

Is it animation by Japanese people? Yes

This is not like Korra no Densetsu where you can make the arguments for it not being animu (it is animu though).

Ok. It's ultimately not really a big deal to me so I added it to the movies list.

If we're going for a basic and safe definition of anime e.g. animation produced in Japan then yes, it's an anime.

That's not the most robust definition of anime that exists but it is the most useful shorthand that I have access to.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with attempting to discuss of any of these particular topics. Each one is a potentially ripe source for discussion and they could all (potentially) allow you to take an interesting look at the anime industry.

However, for the most part what these discussions do is travel in circles with people espousing arguments based on personal gut impressions rather than logic or insight. They can also have the unfortunate consequence of generating bad feelings between fellow humans.

Of course, just because that's how things tend to end doesn't mean that they always need to end up like that. I was just highlighting a pattern that I had notice from reading the thread today.

There are usually plenty of other interesting things to discuss anyway.

Hiccups! And also volleyball! And detatchable Chiyo-chan pigtails! I love the way this show can go from completely mundane to utterly surreal in an instant. It's like a Japanese schoolgirl version of Ed Edd n Eddy.

This is probably the case. Im expecting the next few episodes to take huge steps down in animation quality. Hopefully they don't fuck it up.

I dunno. Maburaho was kind of weird in that
the MC split into multiple versions, one for every girl as a result of magic gone wrong

So this episode was in part a "Shinji tries to run away" episode. Rygart decides he can't put up with the fact that his being an idealistic doofus has gotten some people killed, and also that this losing war is going to cost him all of his best friends. I still think King Hodr is gonna die so that Rygart winds up with Queen Sigyn, since Sigyn and Hodr never are ever seen together, and she's constantly throwing herself at Rygart, but I hope I'm wrong, because Hodr is awesome and has an owl.

I really like the Broken Blade as a mech. Something about the tattered clothes on it make it feel really cool.
