Spring Anime 2013 |OT -7| My Giant CG Pony Can't Possibly Read This Much Baudelaire

Detective Conan 183:
Wow, that was really dumb. Some captivating time with the Detective Boys reading receipts before we get a thrilling episode of them running around and then stopping some heinous criminal whose sole motivation was...killing a dog because it barked loudly? This is basically everything that's bad about AO episodes condensed into one boring half hour. It's a shame, coming after a few fairly good AOs to get something this crappy. Still 47 episodes until Akai shows up, too. I need my strength.

I assume he means in theaters.

yeah.
The clost is NOLA and there is no announcement yet.

I hesitate to make a list yet because we're only one episode into the season, but for now I've got eight shows I'm watching (seven new + Space Brothers), maybe nine pending future impressions, which is a lot more manageable compared to Winter either way.

Too bad almost everything is on Thursday or Saturday.

I pretty much just wing it.
No prior plans, just whatever ends up interesting to me.

The first episodes of the new seasons of Jewelpet and Pretty Rhythm got subbed.

AM I MAN ENOUGH TO WATCH THEM?

you are talking to Brocures here.
The girlier the show the better!

Very occasionally you'll also see a HUD which clearly shows where all the units are supposed to be and what the battle formation looks like. Sadly rather than use this symbolic representation of the battle to help the audience understand the ebbs and flows of combat they instead opt to show you more lasers shooting at stuff. Legend of the Galactic heroes this is not.

You know what show made good use of electronic displays to inform the viewer of relative positioning? Gundam AGE. That show had tons of problems, but even CorvoSol has to admit that frequent cuts to the radar screen on the bridge made it easy to keep track of where everybody was and where they were going.

Tomodachi wa Mahou 02

Luna calling Celestia "Onee-sama" is so :cajun.

That ending was kind of unremarkable, though I'll refrain from final thoughts until I finish the second season/OVAs. I did really like the main cast of characters and how they grew closer to each other while doing their Synidcate jobs and interacting with the reoccurring characters.

Should I go straight to season 2 since it was released before the OVAs, or go to the OVAs since it comes next chronologically?

Caught a couple more premieres today.

[Gargantia] 01

That was neat, if a bit empty. I don't know. Aside from Sugita's robot voice, I didn't really like any of the characters. I enjoyed the fact the main character wasn't your typical whiny mecha protagonist. He actually is a soldier and can make decisions. That was cool. Pretty much hated Amy. Found her to be super cliche, boring, and a tad bit annoying.

The laser battle at the beginning was cool, but completely unintelligible. The technobabble was fine, but the action choreography was horribly done. The way it was shot and the action choices made it impossible to tell what was going on. Also, mecha designs were still just godawful. A couple things I really liked, I like the way they presented the fact the protagonist and the human group couldn't understand each other. It didn't make complete logical sense, but from a shorthand standpoint of communicating information to the viewer it really work. I also love the premise in general.

As long as Sugita robot gets more time and Amy and her dumb squirrel don't hog the show, I'm excited to check out more. I didn't enjoy it as much as MJP, but it was fun enough.

[Attack on Titan] 01

That was super, super cool. The way the action was framed and the sheer fluidity of everything was just a joy. Characters sort of suck, but the world more than makes up for them. Really, really can't wait to see more. There is clearly stuff going on here that's not explained and it should be a ton of fun just to see it all revealed. Well, "Fun" isn't exactly the right word as the show is unflinchingly bleak.

[Devil Survivor 2] 01

I wasn't excited to check this out going into the season. It seemed like just another non-Persona SMT story. Really dark without the interesting characters to back it up. Ended up really surprising me. The characters are a bit archetypal, but they fit the world. The mystery of what the hell is going on, though, is the real driving factor. It's just so crazy. Definitely going to give this a few more episodes at least to see how it develops.

In all honesty I feel like you view him as a lifeless empty character. He has no human aspect at all. This is definitely not the case. Even in the dumbest show, Date-A-Live included, has protagonists that show human characteristics and some semblance of personality/traits. The way you're describing Kirito seems to reject that altogether. I'd love to have a fruitful discussion but it feels like you're being uncooperative in trying to actually dissect something. Instead you're just baselessly hating on something. If that's how it's going to go down then I'm just going to end the conversation here.

I've said my piece before. This is Genshiken or NHK without any of the self-awareness or irony behind it, rendering it a text that offers nothing but to justify the lives of the very people attracted to the work. It is the man-porn for nerds, leading us to...

Who doesn't want to be Batman?

I mean, in Twilight, Bella's defining character traits are that she's clumsy and she's madly in love with a vampire. And multiple people fall madly in love with her for that! This isn't unusual.

I'm not trying to make SAO out to be good or anything, I just don't think the fact that he plays MMOs suddenly turns standard teenage fulfillment schlock into the Dark Spawn of Satan.

Twilight being the exemplar of shitty porn for lonely tweens. You think feminists have written screed after screed about this textual detritous because they have nothing better to do? They see it as destructive to girls precisely because it represents a type of wish fulfillment that is self-destructive and damaging to people trying to form their identities.

Have fun playing games. That's fine. I like Pure Pwnage as much as any other nerd. There's a difference between the guys on Big Bang Theory playing Mario Kart and Kirito though. It is undeniable.

I just don't see the bleakness in Shingeki, to be honest. Maybe I need to watch the episode again, but everything felt too overblown to be bleak or dreadful.

Just pretend Season 2 didn't exist and you'll be much happier. You can watch the OVAs and Season 2 in any order if you really want, but you'll probably just be happier pretending it's a 1 season show.

It's sort of undermined by comical wtf moments
like the guy retreating rather than fighting the Titan or the return of the son's body
to his mother.

The general premise is super dark. Humans have been pushed back to their last city, surrounding themselves with high walls. There's a real sense of them trying to keep back the inevitable advance of the Titans with no real hope of holding out. The way the Titans act and kill I found to be super bleak as well.

There wasn't any time to reflect on the attack in that episode, seeing as it ended with the climax, I expect the next episode to be very bleak.

I thought the show was trying to portray the opposite: Because of so many years of relative safety, everyone was complacent (except for a few children lol) until the end of the episode where the Titans finally break through. Plus, they've been dealing with it for 100 years and there was no reason to assume that they were going to break through (other than knowing that it had to happen in order for there to be a story). There was the segment with the titan-fighting guys, but the show seemed to suggest that they were seen as stupid in other scenes.

Lol, I think I've been listening to the OP too much that my perception of the show is skewed. dem horns

Yeah, the next episode will probably seem a lot more bleak. The city was now reminded that they're in constant danger, after all. I was just surprised that people thought this episode was bleak.

Arata The Legend 1

Definitely in the running for the best ending visuals, nary a bad moment in it. Really like them. The anime as a whole is off to a great start. Excellent character designs all around, emotional plot with Arata
everyone just betraying him and such and then the whole scene with the one who was supposed to be his friend but then denied him behind his back was rude and so cold, unbelievable. Kadokawa, watching him running though, I imagine he truly isnt that bad
. Other Arata, the one that sounds like Kanda kun from Sakurasou is really good, lovely design, I wonder what his experience in the other world is.

I think it felt that way more thematically to me. Yes, how you put it is how they present it in the show. When you see the Titans, especially the really big one, I got the sense of "this is all for naught, no way they can stop this". It really felt like delaying the inevitable.

I suppose he showed great growth when he became Batman for an episode?

Those few replies in the Dog Days thread makes me sad. If I were there at the time I would post all of the fluffy tails.

I think its because Dog Days is a really fun show but ultimately theres not much to really say about it.

Darn I thought Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka was really enjoyable, cant believe so few replies, poor Ayumu, Anderson, Orito :(

Kore wa zombie desk car is pretty fucking awesome.
Shame I could only get the dvds. although bluray wouldnt improve it much visually.

To be honest, I kinda went into this show blind. My first impression of this show was from the OP, lol. That's why I think the OP is coloring how I see this anime. People are saying that this is like Muv-Luv though, so now I know that this show isn't going to be a super-uplifting POWER OF HUMANKIND show.

Promising first episode. I enjoyed it for the most part.

The first half of the episode was a bit awful to watch. So many CG objects/models combined with massive amounts of special effects made the war nearly impossible to follow. At some point Ledo decides to go into god-mode and blast lasers everywhere, but the lasers don't do anything of value from what I could tell. They don't strike anything and they still explode all over the screen! Huh?

Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. I don't know. 500 lasers being shot per second by purple flower creatures meshed against bright pink backgrounds was surely not a good idea.

The second half was a delightful change. Ledo wakes up 6 months after his mecha faced issues with a wormhole that redirected his destination, and finds himself in a building with people speaking an unknown language. He kidnaps a local girl whilst trying to investigate this mysterious new place, and at the end finds out that he had landed on earth. The direction/pacing of this entire section was well done.

Nice character designs, and the music was pleasing throughout the episode.

The Flowers of Evil 1

Maybe it was all the negativity that set my expectations in line, but everything went better than expected! The rotoscoping wasn't as egregious as I was told and the direction and atmosphere was great. It seems much more subdued than the manga which makes me wonder who they are going to handle some of the later scenes compared to the manga which is more dramatic. Very interested to see what they do with it from here.

This kind of the Zexal equivalent of little girl idol shows; the main girl is basically possessed by a magical alien princess and somehow gains magical dancing abilities. CHEATING IS FOR WINNERS, BUY MORE PRISM STONES.

Oh, and:

Still catching up with the thread and I see a few people were putting together a list of all the OTs for this season because there are so many anyway so that kind of worked out.

---

You thought well! Many thanks for these and the previous seasonal threads compilation efforts, Nafe! One thread I loved 'lurking' at before taking the plunge and becoming a member here was this one:

Believe in me who believes in you -- The Gurren Lagann thread of burning passion - NeoGAF
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158216

Good times, good times... I'm sure 789shadow could very well check some "fresh" impressions from that thread!

Ah, thanks. I'll have to give this a read too after I watch the show because I still haven't seen it actually. I read the first chapter or so of the manga a few years ago and don't really remember what happened.

I actually decided to join NeoGaf because of the Anime thread. I would read the forum as it was a good source for news and I wasn't aware of all these different sites people use to get their information. It's been pretty good for making me more aware of a lot of information with it's kind of catch all style.

You're missing my Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka and Dog Days OTs.

Also, Hells Angels might count, though I don't know if it's considered an OT.

Thanks. It's kind of depressing seeing so few posts for Kore Zombie and that thread includes both season. :(
I actually liked that show although the second half of the first season wasn't as good for different reasons.

Kind of surprised Dog Days got so few posts too. That show seemed pretty popular enough.
Yeah, I think I'll include the Hells topic under movies and maybe it will give it more exposure. I still haven't seen it myself actually.

They adapted a episode from hayate no gotoku straight from the manga ?

This was a so - so episode , however i can't help but feel sorry for everyone who is confused by this turn of events

So to compensate i'll explain a few things for people who haven't read the manga if they wish to follow this season.

Where is the huge mansion, the guards and klauss ?
Nagi lost her right to inherit the sanzening familly money, as such she lost her mansion and her guards. Hayate and maria followed nagi when she relocated to this new mansion that was her property alone ( given by her mother ) and thus not part of the sanzenin estate. hayate followed because he has a moral debt to pay, maria followed to care care of nagi

Why are they all living together ?
Nagi has this mansion to fall back to, but want money , so she decides to rent the rooms. She then market the rent with bonus and said bonuses of the room rents is that they come with butler services provided by hayate & maria

Why is X character in here ?
Tama
is in the new house garden
Shiranui
is in the new house wandering
Isumi
has a room but spend most of her time doing demon exorcist with sakuya , outside and lose her way back
A-tan is a new character in the anime but present in the manga. she is
the child version of Athena who was Hayate first love and the one who taught hayate all his butler skills. She reverted to a child state and is spending time in a mansion protected by hayate since she needed a body guard. She also need hinagiku senbonzakura sword spirit powers to recover. Her child state has very few memories of hayate.
Hinagiku
was coerced into living in the mansion by Hayate , Aika & A-tan. She does it to stay close to hayate.
Ayumu
realised that this much girls near hayate is dangerous for her plans and asked wataru money to earn a 2 month rent pay for one of the rooms.
Chiharu
had her house destroyed in a fire and needed a quick place to live.

Who is this new character ?

Ruka Suirenji
works as an idol , like hayate and hinagiku she was at a young age forced to live alone with debt from her parents
She is friends with chiharu , she also aims despite her idol work to be a mangaka ( just like nagi) they are rival in that aspect. She fall in love with hayate too and thus also has a room in the new mansion

Kayura Tsurugino
took a vacant place at hakuo academy since wataru left the academy to focus of his company. Despite her apparance , she is a girl but doesn't have feeligns for hayate .. she is an "otaku expert ", spending her time in the mansion but usually sleeps in a tent in the garden.Give advice to nagi for her manga ( work in progress )

Nanoha StrikerS 7 (rewatch)

Jesus Christ my eyes! This is the true beginning of the budget losses this show faces. Pretty obvious QUALITY and awfully animated fight scenes make up this entire episode, along with Teana being melodramatic about not being a super mahou shoujo. If she wasn't so attractive this would be a pretty big problem.

<3

Still don't really wanna watch though lol.Is manga worth reading?

Why did you quote me twice ?

Anyway .. it depends on what you want from the manga. if you want stupid situation and comedy , it still hasn't lost his edge. The long terms of plot seems to be close but they are far in reality and they finally started to treat the problems of the pairings with the main character ( after 400 chapters )

So if you watch it for comedy : yes.
If you want closure, wait.
If you want something serious , no.

I still can't believe there haven't been any other series that garnered enough virulent hate in the western fandom as to make people want to deny their very existence. I mean, sure, you have the "it doesn't exist" jokes about Tsukihime, DtB S2, the E7 movie, and such, but those are all in more of a tongue-in-cheek manner, none of that is on the same level.

I just still can't wrap my head around it.

Bah, I was hoping that article might let slip what the other noitaminA show is supposed to be in July, but no such luck. Maybe the timeslot's going back to 1 show only?

It looks like it's back to 1 show per season. They mention Katanagatari for April, Silver Spoon for July, and an original show for October. RIP Newtamina?

Hmm... given that, do you think that they're using the Katanagatari rerun, with its double-length episodes, as a way to bridge things between the current two-show format back to the old half-hour one-series timeslot?

I thought it got better only withing the last quarter or so of the show, but that was around two and a half years ago. This really isn't worthy of the Nanoha franchise, but the main storyline isn't going to change because (presumably) Japan ate this shit up. I really hope that one spin-off where they're kids again with cards or something gets an anime.
