Recently I started watching Jewelpet Kira Deco!, the magical girl little girls' show from 2012 that no one bothered with, and am up to episode 5. (My present avatar is drawn from it.) It's actually pretty good and quite funny. It unabashedly embraces the weird, and while Studio Comet doesn't have the animation resources that Toei can (sometimes) give to Precure, there's enough visual creativity and energy to support the comedy. Episode 5 was particularly good in this respect with Dezaki postcards and crazy faces (and shirtless guys!). I wrote up a more extensive essay on the series so far at my new blog, which is where I intend to publish my long-term criticism in the future.

Fun fact: Kira Deco was directed by the guy behind Milky Holmes and written by the guy behind Heartcatch Precure and DOREMI.

However, SUNSHINE SUBS FUCKING WHEN:

THESE SONGS ARE NOT EDITED. I REPEAT: THESE SONGS ARE ACTUALLY IN THE SHOW.

Since I've been absent from these parts for a while, I'll just briefly go over what I've been up to anime-wise.

I saw Wolf Children at the New York International Children's Film Festival. It's fantastic, but you probably know that already. People talk about Hosoda being "the next Miyazaki", which is a silly comparison to make, but if there was any Ghibli director I was reminded of while watching it, it would be Takahata. The whole sequence where Hana was learning how to farm in particular reminded me of Only Yesterday. Loved the use of music throughout; the exhilarating snow ride and the tension when
Yuki scratched Souhei
were the two scenes which stood out the most in their skillful coordination of music and visuals. I had seen people say that the film ends abruptly, but I can't agree with that statement. The whole arc following the career of a mother is a very natural one (albeit compressed) and it ends just where it should, closing a chapter of the lives of Hana, Ame, and Yuki. Excellent and sensitive characterization.

Unfortunately I was unable to ask Hosoda any questions, but it's probably best that the kids present got to ask their questions rather than me asking some animation nerd question that probably wouldn't have interested anyone else in the audience. Just seeing him live and getting to thank him for the film in person was neat enough. It's a weird feeling when someone you've looked up to for a while and seen in photographs is actually there standing in front of you.

As far as currently airing stuff goes, the one thing I'm watching right now is Yuyushiki. The girls are charmingly idiotic and the character animation is a lot of fun to watch. I still need to go back and finish Code:Breaker, but I'm rather impressed by Kinema Citrus' work as of late. Definitely a studio I'll keep my eye on.

That's about it, but I pretty much know what else I want to check out from this season and recently (and not so recently), so no need for further suggestions!

Oh snap.

I'm happy you're back and I'm happy to hear you had a good time seeing Wolf Children at the festival.

And my Bakemonogatari watching (now Nisemonogatari) continues.

Karen Bee. I'd say this is my least enjoyable story so far. I liked parts of it: the development of the sisters, I liked the Tsubasa stuff, I liked the day spent with Nadeko/Suruga. I just didn't much like the main Kaiki story. I felt like it went on too long / dragged.

Fun fact: Kira Deco was directed by the guy behind Milky Holmes and written by the guy behind Heartcatch Precure and DOREMI.

I knew about the Milky Holmes connection, but what do you mean with the writer? As far as I can tell, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu doesn't have any connection with Precure or Doremi.

My bad; I misread the Japanese credits. He was script writer, not series composer. The Milky Holmes writer wrote Kira Deco... which actually makes it more interesting, in a way.

Spotify has several Japanese bands. Depends on what you're looking for though.

More anime music than general japanese music. Thus I did things like search for Lisa Oribe, Nana Mizuki, and Yoko Ishida without a single hit on any of those services. The closest was a shitty cover of the main SAO song.

Waifu of the season.
Totally not buying she's dead. We didn't even see a body!

So, hmm, that was a thing. At least the mechas didn't look bad? Out of every mecha show this season these are the ones that look the most like the 2D portions, so I have to give Sunrise accolades for that. Otherwise, this was pretty stupid, particularly in the realm of character motivation.
oh my god my girlfriend is dead now I'm totally gonna jump into this giant robot and yadda yadda BLARGH I'm a vampire now
.

Also, people keep comparing this to Code Geass, but a big reason that show worked was Loldouche's hamming it all the way up to eleven. Haruto is far too much of yet another lame beta harem-candidate protagonist for me to particularly care about him
becoming a vampire
or not. Also, none of the other characters have the bravado or the pompousness of any of the players in Geass' cast.

P.S. T.M. Revolution X Nana Mizuki would have been an awesome combo if the OP didn't sound like EVERY OTHER FUCKING NANA MIZUKI SONG EVER.

Is there a least with all the AnimeGAF blogs? I wanna spam all your comments sections.

#AttackOnTitan Ep 3 will be available on EVS this Sun at 10am, at which time Ep 1 will be available for free to non-subscribers!

Okay, so I guess Funi will eventually be making their AoT simulcast free as well, though on a much larger delay than Crunchyroll's.

One Piece 591

Robin was fun in this episode with how she reacted to Franky making faces in Chopper's body. Hard to see the kids succumbing to their addiction with the drugs, but at least the crew know about Caesers true personality.

There's no point in you even writing about episode one now the disaster that is episode 2 exists!

Well I already hate the protag. He's not goofy or funny, he's just obnoxious. Pretty standard so far though.

Don't drop it. Keep going and you will reach the promised land of eternal enlightenment!

Also we need someone to keep the cycle going after jgminto is finished with the show.

Any takers?

Who the hell looks at porn on a date? What's wrong with you?
Was not expecting uncoloured nipples in the OP.
What is with all these terrible sideways shots?
Why would Zura put up with the protag's shit?

More Lupin III vs. Detective Conan!

lupin-iii-vs-conan.jpg

The combined 21st-22nd issue of Shogakukan's Shonen Sunday magazine is revealing next Wednesday that a Lupin III vs. Detective Conan The Movie film will open in Japan in December 2013, more than four years after Lupin III vs. Detective Conan television special aired on NTV in 2009 and earned a 19.5% rating.
Unexpected and totally welcome.

Also, welcome back hosannainexcelsis. =]

Lagrange Flower of Rinne (ep 10-12)

Was letting this play while I was playing Devil Survivor Overclocked, but the dub sounds way good. The final scene in twelve was so heartfelt and stuff in english
when they are going goodbye, see you soon, bye, see you soon, emotional

Accel World 1 (3rd rewatch dubwatch via neon alley)

Haru sounds good sometimes he almost sounds close to shinji ikari, but others times far from it (diff va), but perfect for the role. Ash Roller is quite as memorable as his JPN voice, and then Taku sounds way more awesomer, confident, and all protagonist perfect male leadish in english, gah, I wish he was main character and he and Haru switched roles. Will follow weekly.

Yahari 03

I still like the main character's dialogue.

I still dislike his character design.

I mean I pretty much don't expect this to ever do harem antics so I'll stick by it.

It's Christmas in April!

It's also Christmas where Santa enters by jumping through your window and orders stuff from Amazon.

Fate/Zero English Dub 1

Still an excellent episode as I remember it. I'd say that the voice cast is sort of hit and miss. I don't think Freeman is a good choice for Kirei considering his personality but the deepness in Freeman's voice is good. Mercer does a good job as Kiritsugu. I'd say O Brien's Kariya was the standout. It was really really good. The lines were delivered phenomenally, the emotion was there, and dat accent. Everyone else was about average. Oh yeah, Iri's voice acting is bad. LOL.

Jewelpet Kira Deco 5

One other thing I want to mention about this episode is that I'm impressed they managed to get a post-coital image into a kids' show.

hosanna's back and he's watching Jewelpet? whoa, unexpected but cool.

7Th, we should totally translate Sunshine although I'd basically be no help whatsoever. I tried to do an episode on my own a while back but my language skills still just aren't there yet.

I definitely want to watch Sunshine; just the fact that the main girl is actually the "most popular bitch queen of the school" makes it interesting. It's like giving Nanami her whole show!

I kinda regret reading the manga now as I now know what's gonna happen next. :/

I mean, the way this show handles the material is so much better it's not even funny. Oh well, dat Chiho ED drawing was the shit.

Is this a bad time to mention that I've never seen School Days?

Although, I think I did kinda hear that
the MC rapes some chick, I guess?
is that too much of a spoiler to be able to "enjoy" it?
Nah, you should be fine. Enjoy the ride!

Welcome back, hosannainexcelsis! I have missed your presence and contributions in the thread.
If things are getting better for you, I hope it keeps that way.

I am feeling much better; thank you.

Awesome, now I can push for Dezaki postcard avatar month.

I would be totally down for that. Dezaki postcards are the best postcards.

The first Kira Deco episode has 2D idol dancing too! (But it's not particularly good.) I do like that OP more than Kira Deco's, although I think I like Kira Deco's human designs a bit better.

hosanna's back and he's watching Jewelpet? whoa, unexpected but cool.

There's enough Precure fans around here that maybe we can get a Jewelpet fan brigade going!

Aniplex USA has confirmed that Anime Boston (bad timing, I know) will be another SAO-focused convention, with the director (Tomohiko Ito), producer (Shinitirou Kashiwada), and English voices for Kirito and Asuna (Bryce Papenbrook and Cherami Leigh) in attendance, along with another preview of the dub.

Incidentally, the presenter still can't pronounce "Oreimo" correctly.

No surprise there. Aniplex is pushing hard so I expect SAO is the theme of this year. That said, I wonder if I should go and get my Silver Spoon poster autographed.

After being shocked at how entertaining episode one of Happiness was, I was all ready to try and leverage my position as little girl show evangelist toward getting some people to try it. Looks like some jolly co-operation is in order!

I know that we briefly discussed this before, but the Sunshine protag is also fairly blatantly designed for a decidedly not-young audience.

Alright, people. Can we have a list for all the meltdowns that comes from watching the ending to this series? These are the best.

Wow, I didn't expected to take this long. I'm trying to destroy my current backlog. Already saw Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, MLA Total Eclipse and Haganai NEXT

I'm too lazy to post impressions right now so I'm just going to score them, in that same order: 8, 8.5, 8
