Oof. That was a pretty rough episode. Nothing... really happened. It was sort of shonen-y in that it was about practicing a technique and... getting food. You can tell all of the budget was poured into the actual mecha fight (rightfully so), but even then the off-model characters and limited animation was pretty below average.

I didn't bother taking screen caps since there wasn't anything that stuck out to me in the episode for the most part. Oh, the transformation was pretty cool.

Oh I love Kraehe. She's so evil and gets such a kick out of taunting Fakir.

So, it seems that Princess Tutu's main job now is to prevent
Raven Mytho
from stealing the hearts of people as a sacrifice for
Kraehe's father.
It starts with Pike, Duck's friend. Tutu wins, and then Mytho gets scared.

Oh, and bedbug sex is when
the male cuts the female and ejaculates into her wound
, right?

Yeah? Then he directs like he's on a budget.

None of these are jumpy or quick moving shots. So why do they clearly look wrong?

Man, I see what you guys were saying about the technobabble. The whole battle sequence was just a big mess, with ugly CGI, incomprehensible dialogue, and disorienting direction. Outside of that, though, I really liked it. Leaving aside the battle, the show has great color design, with richly shaded, three-dimensional character designs(although the females have that dumb shoulder blush thing going on). The setup succeeded in hooking me, with Ledo being separated from his apparently caste-like futuristic society and
seeing the oceans of Earth for the first time
. Also, how good is Sugita as Chamber? Soooo good.

Valvrave the Liberator episode 1

Not bad not great. Shoko
had the mark of death from the start, but I didn't expect her to kick the bucket just in the first episode.

I read recently that Gurran Lagann 4 was intended to be a deliberate parody of animation quality dips in anime shows. Assuming this to be true, I'm not sure why you would do that.

But then, I'm not a fan of Osamu Kobayashi's style in general. I didn't like his Kemonozume solo episode, and while his Dantalian solo was okay and had a neat concept, I still had issues with its aesthetics.

I should really rewatch this episode, because I've utterly forgotten everything about how it looked in motion. Still, though, it's worth noting that the derp faces were totally intentional on the part of Imaishi (Kobayashi and Numata were in on it, obviously).

I feel like if I hopped on the School Days train at this point after reading everyone's reactions that the series would feel pretty underwhelming.

Sounds like pure revisionist history to me, LOL.

Would Kobayashi so eagerly admit to working on Gurren Lagann if that were the case? It would be akin to making fun of his art.

His Panty & Stocking episode was brilliant, though.

Well, this looks perfectly fine. Maybe the characters are more suited to it, though. I think episode 1-3 of Gurren had stellar character art and the complete shift of that coupled with it being the first episode to have a pretty non-consequential "filler" type plot made episode 4 just a bit off putting.

The girl in that video's voice is giving me such a headache for some reason.

Well, it worked if that's the case. Not sure who wins there...

Jewelpet Happiness 02:

This is going to be a better economics show than MMY.

I'm gonna go ahead and put my stamp of approval on this. Anybody who can endure the mid-tier Precure seasons will handle this just fine.

You'll be happy to know that Kobayashi no longer taints Gurren Lagann after episode four!

I still haven't seen it but every time I get in the mood to start School Days someone else is already posting their impressions here and I'd feel bad about helping deluge the thread with so much School Days posts at once.

One day though. Maybe.

Only one School Days viewer per month. New rule.

Because it's easier.

Just speaking personally, but Arjuna made me way more uncomfortable than School Days ever did. I mean, I was already spoiled on School Days years ago so I was just grinning with anticipation the entire time, but Arjuna is a pretty arduous watch for a 1-cour series due to the sheer amount of bullshit packed into each episode.

Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian

I remember dropping this one back when it was airing because the very episodic nature of the show did not sit well with me and I felt like I was just wasting my time and, for the most part, it turns out I was right. By the time I reached the final episode I still didn't know a very whole lot about these various characters or their factions nor did I particularly care, to be honest. I suspect the source material goes to greater lenghts to expand upon its story and characters but with such a short run this adaptation was simply incapable of providing any sort of satisfying conclusion or, indeed, of inspiring much in the way of memorable moments on the whole. All I could gather in the end is that Phantom Books are bad and that there are some people out there who make bad use of them. That's pretty much the whole gist of it.

Not everything is quite as forgettable, though, as I unexpectedly found episode 9 to be pretty darn fantastic. Whereas I'll be the first to admit I found Kobayashi's efforts in that infamous Gurren Lagann episode to be less than admirable, I gotta say, his particular brand of artistry is put to the absolute best of its ability this time around. The best description I can come up with for this episode is ethereal and fairytale-like.

Seriously, if there is one reason to ever bother with Dantalian it's to appreciate the magic that can happen when you pair up someone like Kobayashi with the material best suited to his abilities even if the rest of the show feels completely neoGainax in its execution and is probably best left forgotten.
